With the recent attention given to the age of ST users, I thought it may be helpful for everyone (willing) to give their ages.
It may also shed light upon past/present/future correspondence, as one may realize they are/were communicating with folks of vastly different age(s).
Hopefully, this will help to keep a respectful, positive vibe throughout the Supertopo community.
I'm 52 years old.

Photos from my Yosemite days working in the old Mountain Room. I worked for Curry Co. on & off for 11 years 1960-1971
Circa 1970 - 71 During my Warren Harding days. Chuckle
I remember thinking that Harding was really old, he was 18 years older than I was, making him an ancient 46 at the time.
The now prehistoric picture.
I am 70, my birthday is in Aug, not sure how I got so old.

You Nguyen.
I'm only 65.
The Hmong hereabouts don't pay much attention to dates. You see, when their people began their migration to America, they celebrated their births by the season, not a calendar date. When the feds demanded of them a firm date to put on their immigration forms, they all just used the date June 1, the middle of our calendar year.

I like to say that running and climbing give me the body of a 20 year old, but hands of a 90 year old. So I am "average" for my age.

At city of rocks last summer, we ran into a foursome of 60-70 yr old buddies who were road-tripping. A couple of these guys are well known to most folks that post here -- at younger ages, they were pushing the highest standards and, equally impressive, they all still seemed like kids. The highlight was watching one who had recently turned 70 (and who had just had colon cancer surgery) fire off a 120' 5.7 lead in sneakers and a diaper. That's not all he was wearing (which really would have been something), but we learned about the diaper because he was cracking jokes the whole way up the pitch about the ease of not having to find a toilet etc. Later when he was still climbing in sneakers on increasingly difficult routes, I asked him "why no climbing shoes?" He said they were too uncomfortable. Some folks really are forever young at heart. And, for that reason, Neil Young was wrong...it isn't always better to burn out than it is to rust.

51 in two weeks. Not really feeling it yet. Not getting any better, but at least not getting any worse. A lot easier to find climbing partners in their 20s and 30s, and a sure-fire ego boost when I can show them a new trick or two. Not so cool when they float moves that I just never did quite figure out how to do, though.

The Lisa, running miles equivalent to your age every year is a losing proposition as is doing a pitch for every year. People should start at, say 30, with a set number of miles or pitches....ie the max they can do, and then do one LESS for every additional year.

Some thoughts about ageing and climbing:
I'm often asked where I grew up. My response.....pregnant pause and then, "grow up? I didn't , I'm a climber."
Aleister Crowley, climber, writer, black magician, being interviewed in the 1920's.

Crowley......long pause, very thoughtful, "my ambition has been to extend my adolescence beyond all previous limits."

I bump up the average.
I'm 62 and collecting social security.
However, a few years ago I read the book "Younger Next Year" about aging and postponing its processes. I decided his would be a goal of mine. I think I am doing a good job. Took my blood pressure and heart rate today. Heart rate = 46. BP way below normal. I am a better skier, golfer (and perhaps climber too) than at any other time of my life. Doing yoga nearly daily and can verify that I am more flexible now than any since my 40s. (Still not as flexible as when I was in my 20s however).
How about a thread along the lines of "How Many Years Did You Lose Last Year" for STer's who take on the goal of "Younger Next Year." If Arsenault climbs Half Dome, I think he can make a claim he's "Younger This Year."

Watch out Hanie, I may catch up ......... as another bit of trivia - at what age did everyone start clinbing, ie. tie in for the first time? ... mine was Jam Crack in my 50th year (49 5/8) ... not sure, but I think it may have been Karl Baba that invited me to tie in ("if I had shoes and a harness" - I dug them out of my pack - first time I had ever put that "want ad" Chouinard harness on) ... one fall 3' off the ground and then cruised it (at a VERY slow pace) ...
I meant hamie ... dang short term memory ...

...still prefer the fact that I'm as young as Mr Donini in geologic years. =D
Added: ...been always fascinated and thought it was pretty awesome (also felt envious) that many have climbed longer than I've lived...! What's more fascinating is most of you are N times more fit and athletic than those half your age. You guys and ladies are true inspiration!! *^_^*

Donini loves that geologic time concept. Me too. I've had it as one of my e-mail signatures for a long time now (attributed to him of course).
If I can do half of what he does when I get to his age, I'll be plenty pleased. Got something to shoot for.
I'm 51; just call me Mr. Median! In my mind, I seem to be stuck around what I looked like in my mid-thirties, until I look in a mirror. I got this concept from my Mom's husband, who happens to be visiting us as I write. He's 86 and still thinks of himself as in his late twenties. He definitely does not look 86!
I have been blessed/cursed with looking younger than my age most of my life. Though I think that is starting to fade. When I was in my mid-thirties, I would tell people that I was 23. They'd go, "No way!" I'd say, yeah, just kidding, I'm really 26 and they'd totally buy it.
I've always been happy to be my age. I am who I am. Ehyeh asher ehyeh. :-)

Hi McCfly,
You're way too young to need to lie about your age or date women half your age. This phenomena usually happens as men pass their 50th year.
I often refer to 35 as the time I began to become my own person. I was massively insecure about who I was until I reached my mid-30s and coincidently started my antique business. I began to have a confidence in myself that I had never had in my 20s. Even though I had been on my own for the time I was 18 and put myself through college I was never that sure of myself. However, I was good at putting up a confident front so no one would know what I was really thinking.

My climbing partner ,who is a youngster at 53, fell last summer and tore something in his knee . He had no choice but to hobble 12 miles back out over boulder fields , glaciers and steep side hills of scree and mud to the car.
When we got back, the doctor told him that his problem was that his mind thought he was younger than he was.

[HFCS - other than the first graph that I posted, they have been corrected. But, if you look at the first graph in the thread, you'll notice that there are only 4 vertical bars between each tic mark (and the tic marks correspond to 5 year differences). In other words, each vertical bar was not containing a unique value for age (some bars contained, for example, both 54 and 55 year olds).]
The median is presently at 53.
Here are a couple bivariate graphs. Because I know almost nothing about all of you, I had to go with two of the few observable factors (that could be easily counted in 15 minutes or less) = do you use a pseudonym or your real name (e.g., your first name, your last name, or a combo) and do you include a picture of yourself or an avatar in the photo box alongside your name?
Because they had a pretty sizable pull on the slope of difference, I excluded our two users younger than 15 yrs (but added them back in, in case you are interested).
Short story = on average, older STers are somewhat more likely than younger STers to use their real name and to include a picture. (Interestingly, because few people use real name and have a self portrait, these trends are not due to the same people in each case.)
for those interested, here is what happens if we include the two youngest STers
pud, if this is too much just say "stop" ...don't want to hijack the thread with graphs

Not at all Cowpoke. I quite enjoy your work!
By personalizing respective authors here on ST, I believe we change the dynamic. We don't have to give shoe sizes (might be fun?!) but, getting to know our fellow posters on a human scale allows a certain amount of respect and consideration be given.
I admire many here not only for their climbing resume' but for their ability and willingness to share knowledge and experience while asking nothing in return.

Edit: Patrick, dude, you are confusing me. First you post asking me if you should remove your post "because I am not a medical professional." then, I ask "why would you do that?" after which, you delete the post asking if you should delete and then post saying you have deleted no posts. If you are wondering how much influence non-respondents may have on the median, it is probably not much, at this point. With the median at 52.5, it would take 25 people (younger than 50) to bring the median down to 50 or, similarly, 25 people (older than 55) to bring the median up to 55.
Nonetheless, would be cool to have as many people as possible represented in the histogram (I think), so I'll update it this afternoon before I leave for the land of trolls (not the internet variety...the big ones that eat people).
edit: I haven't been able to include a few folks who responded, but gave a non-specific age range (or no age) rather than a precise year. if you want me to include you, post up a specific number of years you've been around.
edit 2: you can, but don't have to be as precise as Norwegian, who just got older by .00000019 years (or thereabouts) as I typed this.

64 on August 10th when I will do what Donini says is a losing proposition since it gets harder each year when you really want it to get easier. I'll try to lead 64 pitches. I got in 63 pitches of 5.10 last year but allowed up to 10 laps per route. At 60, I lead 60 unique routes but didn't restrict the grade. It is getting pretty tough but it keeps me working out all spring to get ready. Use it or lose it.

Since I see some mathematicians on this page, I'll disclose my age using a meta-puzzle. Those not mathematically inclined can discern my age from other posts on this forum. If there's no interest, I'll disclose the answer later:
Wizard A and Wizard B were riding on a bus. Wizard A started bragging about his kids, and Wizard B made the mistake of asking how old they were. Wizard A replied, "I'm not going to tell you, but the sum of their ages equals the number on the bus, which you know, and the product of their ages equals my age, which you don't know."
Wizard B thought for a while, then asked "If I knew your age and the number of children you have, then would I know their ages?" Wizard A replied, "No, that's not enough information." Wizard B then stated, "Ah! Now I know your age!"
On Father's Day, I will turn an age equal to Wizard A's age plus the number on the bus, plus two (2).

Hey RGold,
That's some great mileage you've had on that red shirt !
The original was a Joe Brown wool shirt made for climbing on Cloggy in a downpour. Poor thing, by 2010 or so you can see that the collar, sleeves and pockets have all fallen off and the torso is all that's left. It might have a brief future as a Joe Brown halter top, but I doubt Joe would approve and, even as a fashion-forward senior citizen, that might be over the line for me.

A couple of weeks ago I was visiting a friend in Indianapolis with my Grandson Xavier. Thom asked if we would mind a visit with his Mother and on the way there I asked how old she was knowing Thom is 72. He told her as much and she asked me "Can you keep a secret?" Yes I replied , she replied "So can I" :0) Thought that was a pretty good answer.

Wizard B then stated, "Ah! Now I know your age!"
Wizard A = 72
Three children could be 2, 6, 6
or 3, 3, 8. Indeterminate.
I will turn an age equal to Wizard A's age plus the number on the bus, plus two (2)
Wow . . . sure about that?
You may be citing a more sophisticated problem than this. Mine is simply one example. If your problem is more general, I will leave it to RGold - he's younger than me with a more agile mind.

Two things about age.
It's a very rough indicator of what exposure someone has had to life's things and events.
You can use it to good advantage in getting park passes, social security and medicare (if your exposure has left you desirous of such like).

the latest and greatest:
Some things to consider:
1. there are nearly three times as many Supertopo respondents in their 50s as there are in their 40s (67 vs. 24).
2. there are nearly as many respondents in their 30s (23) as there are in their 40s, but both are still well behind respondents in their 60s (33)
3. the median age of respondents is 12.4 years older than the median age in Canada (40.6 in 2010) and 15.9 years older than the median age in the US (37.1).
4. cheers, Don, for standing tall at the tail of the distribution -- freaking awesome!
[One fun idea: someone could overlay a timeline onto this histogram providing an abbreviated history of climbing. But, the timeline would run from right to left...and given our oldest respondent (thus far), perhaps the first dates would come from a time when this respondent was in his late teens/early 20's. We would end up with an abbreviated timeline of historical climbing accomplishments across these generations. For example, if the first year at the far right of the graph was 1950 (at which time Don Lauria was 17), then Steck-Salathe FA could be noted. By the time the timeline got down to the 30 yr olds, there would be things like Lynn Hill's FFA of the nose; and, by the far right we'd have things like Honnold's solos (for those not in their teens yet!)...obviously, I left out tons in between and only mentioned ditch big events, but you get the idea.]

Well, I've thought about the wizards problem and reduced it to checking a finite number of possibilities, a check which I am not willing to do either by hand or by writing a program to do it for me. What follows is an analysis that might catch the fancy of the odd lurking math geek, but will not be of interest to anyone else. Scroll on...
A way to search for solutions is to consider all possible bus numbers, for each bus number B enumerate all possible integer partitions of B, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_%28number_theory%29); and for each such integer partition associate the wizard age obtained by multiplying together all of the partition parts.
Call an age A (B,n)-ambiguous if there are two different factorizations of A, each with n factors, n at least 3, such that in both cases the sum of the factors is B. (We insist on n at least three because knowledge of the bus number, the wizard's age, and the fact that there are two children is enough to determine the children's ages by solving a quadratic equation.)
A solution to the problem would correspond to a bus number B whose list of partitions contains but a single (B,n)-ambiguous age. (Note that there could be a (B,n)-ambiguous age and a (B,m)-ambiguous age with n not equal to m, and if this happens then the bus number B is not a candidate for the solution.)
John's first example has B=14, with 72 a (14,3)-ambiguous age. The (14,3) ambiguity of 72 is established by the children's age possibilities (2,6,6) and (3,3,8). John's second example has B=13, with 36 a (13,3)-ambiguous age. The (13,3)-ambiguity of 36 is established by the children's age possibilities (1,6,6) and (2,2,9). But neither of these can yet be considered a solution, because we still have to be shown that there cannot be another (14, m)-ambiguous age, respectively (13,m)-ambiguous age, with m > 3. There are, for example, 101 integer partitions of 13 according to Wolfram Alpha, and although a number of these can be eliminated, there still appears to be quite a few to check. (A computer program would make short work of it of course.)
There is one bit of good news: call a bus number B bad if among its list of partitions are partitions whose product determines two different (B,n)-ambiguous ages. If B is bad, then so are all bus numbers greater than B. This is because a (B,n)-ambiguous age is also going to be a (B+1, n+1)-ambiguous age---just add a 1 year-old child to the list of parts defining the (B,n)-ambiguous age. What this means is that if, for any reason, we discover a bus number to be bad, then all larger bus numbers are also going to be bad and so we only have to look for a solution among smaller bus numbers.
All bus numbers are not bad; for example B=1 is not bad (B=1 works mathematically but corresponds to a 1 year-old wizard with a 1 year-old son, which is not exactly the kind of solution we're looking for.) The point is that since not all bus numbers are bad, there must be a smallest bad bus number, and if there is a solution it must occur for bus numbers smaller than the smallest bad one. This guarantees that a search of finite length will either determine that there is no solution or else determine what the solution(s) is (are). In other words, there is a definitive answer or answers to the question that can be determined in a finite number of steps.
There is a subtlety to the problem statement which I haven't accounted for. Wizard B knows the bus number but we do not, yet we are supposed to find the age of Wizard A. I've written above as if it is possible that there is more than one bus number that will work and so more than one possible age for Wizard A. But the problem wording suggest that in fact there is only one correct age for Wizard A. This fact, if it is true, would emerge from enumerating all possibilities corresponding to the bus numbers less than the least bad one.

So numbers.....they are important in our culture. But the older I get the more I want to be Tibetan where you are only a day, not a year when you are born. (At least I heard this applies to the Sherpa's.)
I guess I am old now because I get treated with respect. But seriously, I'd rather be cursed and reviled. :D I feel great, but the wrinkles and spots are the true measure of where I am at.
The good news is I climbed my first 5.10a this summer in Tuolumne (only one pitch). So I guess the best is yet to come. I love life and all of yo here.

I'm counting 7 or 8 senior athletes (70+) (we should include rgold, since he aspires to our lofty goals), and a slew of veteran athletes (50 - 69), plus a few children.

Funny, I've been telling everyone I'm 42 all year, but turns out I'm only 41. March 1972.
My students were mostly born in 2000 or later, yikes.
26 years climbing.

I seem to be feeling only about half my calendar age these days. There ought to be some sort of club or something.
Age is just a number. It's pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. What really counts is what you can do, who you can do it with, and how well you connect.
I'm 54, and still sending everything.
Plenty of hair, and all of it mine.

48, soon to be 49. Just writing that makes me feel very puzzled (how did I arrive at that number so quickly?!). When asked my age I usually just automatically say "33" 'cause that's about where I left off...in my mind anyway. Starting climbing at 33, come to think of it.
Mr. Crusher, the lurker who will kill me for posting about him, is 57 but still "crushing" it on the rock. Very impressive as are so many of you. Sorry, together we're probably bringing the average up a bit!

A screen play was written about me a few years ago. The main character was born at age 80 and got progressively younger. When the time came to make the choice, I thought this the much more sensible approach.
