Very bad idea. The ladder on the NE Ridge should be removed permanently as well. The summit is the desire, but style should be the objective.

They're already hoisting 'em up by the hundreds.

What's style got to do with it anymore?

Money and summit photos are the objects, not style.

I'd vote for the ladder, traffic controls on the fixed lines, and minimum qualifications for climbers. It's too late to prevent Everest from becoming Disneyland - the best that can be done is to try to get it under control. I also think the tourists are abusing the sherpa laborers, and am glad to see someone defending them.

Someone should show sherpas this:

Why? They already know what it looks like.

Jeebus, that's pathetic.

Can't wait to see the next 'modification' that will help to 'expand the climbing industry'. Pfft.

What they should really do is ban fixed lines above camp IV.

That would relieve some of the congestion for sure.

If you can't lead that sh!t, you shouldn't be there!

Everest is a profit center, that ladder is going in. They should have one for up and one for down.

I really wanted to climb Everest. It was a boyhood dream that has died hard. I just cannot bring myself to participate in the circus that is Everest these days. It saddens me to think of it becoming a tourist attraction, not much different than a ride at Disneyland. Everest is the highest peak on the planet. It is supposed to be tough, cold, unrelenting, hard, unpredictable and barely doable without O2. Instead, it has been reduced to the lowest common denominator, money."Friends, ladders, countrymen... its ALL aid." True that, but how far down that road are we willing to go? Should we just bolt the f*#k out of everything? How about a massive bolt ladder up the Captain, that way anyone can just clip bolts and climb the thing. Is that ok? No learning curve, no training, no dreaming of the mystery, no being self reliant,in any sense of the word, no romance with the unknown? Just pimp it out to the highest bidders, and start jugging lines or clipping bolts. Hard to fault the Nepalese for cashing in, but some dreams just die hard.

Why mess with ladders, they need a powered escalator and a toll booth.

"Hard to fault the Nepalese for cashing in,"

Oh, I dunno...I can empathize with the desire, and they certainly deserve a bigger piece of the pie, but....

...there would certainly be plenty of 'fault' that would be placed on any group that made similar 'enhancements' to a classic objective (i.e. aforementioned 'Nose Bolt Ladder') in order to increase traffic for the purposes of guiding...

I believe you are describing a guided ascent of El Cap there? Just add a top rope for the person that is jugging a fixed line, and you got it. :)

There are so many places without ladders, cables and crowds. There are still places in the Sierra where you won't see another person for days, even in the high season. If you really love the experience then highest, biggest, longest doesn't mean everything.

Growing concern over Mt Everest turning garbage dump.
“Though we can find a large number of dead bodies lying on the way due to poor rescue management, we can hardly find any garbage on the Chinese side of the Mount Everest,” he added.

I think the cables on Half Dome are a great idea. It gives some people a thrill they'll never forget. It gives them a taste of that which all of us here relish, and that's good.

After all, you can bet the best climber in the world is somewhere on those cables on a daily basis.

The best climber in the world is the one who's having the most fun

Great point Gary. +1. I agree with you. A lot of climbers think we are better than others somehow. Even though we place bolt ladders to aid through blank sections of rock etc. Some times it is good to forget about all these stupid ethics, and have fun.

TY not picking on you with this post but using your quote because it echoes what so many of us think. However, it's important to remember that Everest has many routes...not just the popular one. I doubt we would encounter a 'circus type atmosphere' if we chose any of the others.

hey, hear it first hand from Mingmar Sherpa next Tuesday in Santa Rosa.

He's involved with Saving Mount Everest cleanup efforts.

He might just know a thing or two about the ladder and the scene on Everest. ;)

The lobsters were short. They needed the ladders to get into the sleds.

The eighty year old who summited said in his AP interview:

Just get out of the house. Enjoy good food. Those are the things we should do," said Miura, who dined on hot pot and hand-rolled sushi and enjoyed gourmet Japanese green tea during his climb.

They should stop allowing "guiding" on Everest. It is not safe to have so many inexperienced people on the mountain. This is a defacement of a sacred place.

But, that will never happen, because it is all about the money.
