Oakdale Climbers Festival 2012- Invitation and Schedule of Events
The City of Oakdale and I are pleased to invite you to participate in the inaugural Oakdale Climbers Festival taking place at the Oakdale Community Center Friday, October 26 through Sunday, October 28, 2012.
“Running Towards Commitment- The Salathé Experience” will be the theme for the first two days.
The event will kick off on Friday evening at 7:30pm with a discussion of the personal and climbing history of John Salathé lead by Steve Grossman.
Jerry Gallwas will tell the story of his Salathé piton collection and its connection to the first ascent of the Lost arrow via the Chimney and discuss his own early ascent.
Guest of Honor Al Steck will then comment on his own experiences with John on the north face of Sentinel Rock in July 1950. The Steck-Salathé route set the standard with respect to difficulty and style and was by far the most difficult rock climb of its era and yardstick for the next generation
Ken Yager will discuss John's later years including the transfer of his hardware through the Thune family to the Yosemite Climbing Association. Salathé hardware will be on display for the duration of the event.
Doug Robinson will then speak to the Salathé legacy of boldness and style to conclude the evening.
On Saturday at noon, Tom Frost and Royal Robbins will discuss the influence of Salathé on their approach to climbing El Capitan's southwest face named in John's honor, the Salathé Wall. Tom and Royal will recount their experiences on the first ascent with Chuck Pratt and a subsequent attempt to repeat the climb in a single push with TM Herbert. Fifty years ago Tom and Royal were the first party of two to climb El Cap in a very lightly-equipped second ascent of the Salathé Wall.
At 2 pm Al Steck and Dick Long will describe their third ascent with Steve Roper and show a film that they made en route.
At 4 pm Peter Haan will discuss his experience soloing the Salathé Wall as his first time up El Capitan in 1971.
At 6 pm Paul Piana will describe his experiences free climbing the Salathé Wall for the first time with Todd Skinner in 1988.
At 8 pm Hans Florine will discuss speed climbing the Salathé Wall and the evolution of style to finish out the evening.
On Sunday a symposium entitled “Forging Ahead- American Climbing Hardware in the 1940's, 50's and 60's” will be held from noon to 6 pm.
Come and enjoy hardware displays from all manufacturers active during this thirty year period. Participants will be available to answer questions about producing early hardware and hopefully be willing to speak briefly about their experiences making or selling gear fifty years ago.
Speakers start with Al Steck recalling the early days of the Ski Hut in Berkeley.
Jerry Gallwas reflecting on John Salathé as a craftsman and his own work with pitons.
Dick Long and his partner discussing the history of Longware.
Tom Frost and Dennis Hennek discussing the early days of Chouinard Equipment.
Don Lauria reflecting on West Ridge Sports and the history of Bill Feuerer and his Dolt Equipment.
Authors and artists will be selling and signing books and photographs such as Tom Frost, Royal Robbins, Joe Fitschen, Glen Denny and Steve "Crusher" Bartlett with more to be listed soon.
Registration is free prior to the deadline at:
http://climb.oakdalecity.com/
In order to keep this event free we need financial support in the form of:
1) Donations from boosters in any amount.
2) Limited Artist and Author Exhibition Space for $150.
3) Vendor Exhibition Space for $300.
4) Sponsorship including logo presence on event poster and other promotional material for $500.
5) Festival Guide advertising space starting at $100.
At this point we really need some financial assistance to help properly do this event. Please contact me if you would like to help with a direct donation or need more details about participating in any way.
We are going to print on the event poster very soon so please contact me if you would like to be a sponsor so that we can get your logo in time to include it.

Oakdale, California right on Highway 120 coming from the San Francisco bay area.
Tom Frost lives in Oakdale and the city has been generous enough to partner with us and allow the use of their splendid community center for this event. Ramona Howard and I have put this event together for everyone to enjoy and provide a great opportunity to stop and check out Oakdale.

Whoaza!
Great line up, cool idea, and a good excuse to head to the cowboy capital of the world (so I've read heh heh).
Too bad I can't make it-like the Facelift I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time...again.
(Wish I'd known ahead of time, if it becomes a regular thing I'd love to figure out a way to kick in some goodies).
Good luck and have a fine time!

We need to line up a portable climbing wall for the event.
Does anyone know a local gym or guide service that operates a tip-up tower that we can contact?
I used to work in the industry and would like to have a competent operator and not a carny unless they come highly recommended.
Please contact me.

Oakdale Ca is the self proclaimed cowboy capital of the world...I would say must stop for dirtbags would be the H-B saloon in Oakdale..for you all not familiar...that is the H...Bar...B saloon. Cowboys and climbers....the event will be great...the after hours will be interesting. Can climbers throw a lasso with a 10.5 mil rope?
edit....also you must figure out before you enter if you are a header or a heeler.....if you don't know what that is you best look it up....

Almost there. Failed to find a coffee shop in Turlock, so poaching internet form somewhere downtown.
Stopped in to se Layton en route (as far as Kingman is en-route from Colorado to Oakdale at all) and tried to persuade him to attend.
He was psyched, was really interested in meeting up again with some of the CA climbers he remembers from his Yosemite days, but the long travel is getting to be too tiring for him.

Wish it was just "dentistry" and postponement would have courted disaster.
But, DAMN! They gave me some great drugs, and the gas was kind of fun:
"Do you feel light headed?"
"Not much." I lied.

It's 6:40pm and not a word from the press.....At the very least, at all the JTree events we had the pictographers giving the poor plebians a look into the life of the climbing elite.
Ho hum .......back to Ann Tyler re reads.

I forgot my camera.Plenty of others with photo capabilities(Boodawg?). Great turnout of history makers. Good job Steve, Ramona, and city of Oakdale. Clint and Steck were awesome. Others too! A bit intimidating for a youngster like myself to follow onstage behind these legends. It was a lot of fun and we have two more days. Show up if you can. There are many reclusive heroes here. Show up tomorrow, you won't regret it.

Wonderful stories from climbing partners of Salathe. I wish I had gotten a picture of Nic, but I was laughing. What a great public speaker he is.
And from the young guys, context timeline, pictures and perspective

Great event. All the talks have been superb, fun. Thanks Steve Grossman for putting this on.
Rare treat to watch Royal Robbins and Tom Frost doing a JOINT slideshow about the Salathe Wall. Outstanding. Their interaction was humorous, effortless, with the warmth of two people who'd been friends for a very long time.
At times it was meditative, pithy. Frost, on their preparation, talking about how they spent so much time examining the cliff from below, tracing a continuous line of cracks all the way up the cliff and developing a comfortable familiarity with their chosen line before they began, "El Cap is your best friend. And if you don’t know that, you shouldn’t go up."
Robbins talked about how John Salathe was influential, original, far ahead of anyone else. Lost Arrow Spire in particular, but also other climbs. The desire to hew closely to Salathe's vision and style inspired Robbins and drove his own efforts. The Salathe Wall itself was the application of John Salathe's style to El Cap.
Later, answering questions, someone asked a complex, vague question about how they felt about what they did, or something. Frost, no hesitation: "Well that one's too hard for me and (glancing over at Robbins) he didn't hear it!
Robbins (whose hearing is, perhaps, not so great these days, but who likely heard the quetion just fine) smiles serenely, says nothing, playing along. Hilarious!
What's on later today, Sunday? Grossman has been busy building some kind of exotic display case or cases for equipment made by the Dolt, Salathe himself, Jerry Gallwas, Wilts, Long, Holubar, many more.

OH MY GOD! What a terrific experience. So many great exchanges with hero's and legends the likes of the 50th anniversary of the nose, YCA did a few years back.
Steck, Dick Long, Joe Fitchen, Glen Denny, Wayne Merry, Don Lauria, Paul Piana, Doug Robinson, Peter Haan, Ken Yager, Hans Florine, Bowinkle, Tom Frost, Royal Robbins, Bob Swift, Jerry Gallwas, Mike Sherrich, Nick Clinch, Rich Calderwood, Joe Mccuen, Ken Boche, and David Yearian plus many, many, others made these last few day made for an exciting time.
The stories, camaraderie, photos, priceless gear, perfect venue and Steve Grossmans many hours of preparation made for a union of our community tighter then ever. It warms my heart to see everyone gathering like this. With a loose fitting band of close nit individuals and small band of friends with wild but intimate experiences; opening up and sharing the secrets of the past.
Climbing is an integral, important and vital part history. It should be preserved and captured for the future of climbers and even the general public. Thanks to the work of people like Steve Grossman and Ken Yager and events like this will carry the message of our sport for many generations.
I feel very privileged to have participated in the 1st Climbers Festival of Oakdale. I only hope that this is the first of much more to come. Those of you who chose something else to do this weekend truly missed out on a magical moment in the climbing world. Steve, I have know idea if you can ever out do this one. I hope so but you set the bar pretty high. I will anticipate next years festival with relish!

Here are some shots of the gear displays from the Sunday symposium before I took them apart to come back to Seattle.
The only thing missing is the two gear boards that Gary Neptune graciously loaned for the Festival from his shop/museum in Boulder.
Thanks to Gary, Billy Roos, Paul Sibley, Jim Phillips, Don Lauria, Ken Boche, Dick Long, Jerry Gallwas and Ken Yager for contributing to a spectacular display of hardware from thirty years of foreign and domestic production. It was a lot of work to assemble and display but a perfect fit to go along with the speakers and what they had to say about making and selling gear during the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It couldn't have gone better!

Did anyone else see the big blue electric piton that rose from the side of the stage and disappeared into the back wall?
Oh, never-mind, probably just another flashback.
Good things last.

Thanks to some fine work by Ramona Howard and Russell Olivera directing a solid crew of volunteers the event went smoothly and the environment was elegant and intimate. Seamless teamwork is a thing of beauty.
Everybody had a really rich and rewarding time...can't beat that. But we will try our best next year. So put October 18-20 on your calendar for 2013!
Merry Christmas Folks!
