This thread is for us to vent regarding the stupid things that bother us. Things that would make people in 3rd world countries want to cuss us out.

I will start:

FWP #1

Had window seat on the flight from LV to SF today, specifically to look at Eastern Sierra from the air.. Refused to go on an earlier flight because no window sit was available. It ended up being cloudy!!!!!! :`(

Life has dealt me its share of first world problems. But one incident stands out:

A few months ago, I put my brand new Droid 4 in the middle of my pack and climbed up a chimney. Pulled it out to post on the Internets at the top of the route. Alas, THE SCREEN WAS CRACKED!

AND THERE WAS NO 3G AT THE TOP.

The Horror.

The guy I'm currently working with in a prop-shop plays LOUD reggae tunes ALL DAY LONG.

I've listen to reggae for 50 hours this week.

Never been much of a fan of this particular music genre but now, I have to say.

I loathe reggae.

how come you have to be some sort of rocket scientist mind meld nerd to operate TV/DVR satellite remotes?

And how come websites have to change their layout every 6 months or so, so you can't find anything?

and how come cars are so damn complicated?

And how come when an automaker designs an engine that works really well, they have to change it 2 years later so that parts don't match and the new engine doesn't work as well as the old one.. substitute engine with every other auto part.

Decided to go to the local pizza shop to get a dough ball today because I was too lazy to make my own in my sweet kitchenaid mixer I got as a wedding gift. Paid $5 for the damn thing, and then waited 25 minutes for some dude in the back to bring it out while the person who readily took my money sat on a bench stool doing nothing all be cause my order was put in as #225 and the orders being brought out were cooked slices.

Went to grocery store and they didn't sell half the ingredients I wanted.

After the hour long mission, I ate out.

Tough decisions to be made on how to f*#k over the third world, not to mention how to f*#k over any others that get in the way.---I said that.
So the mad professor Mouse lends his energy, if not his expertise, so that this laudable intention is targeted at the right people.

Factors involved in the correct, approved definitions of first, second, and third worlds:

A) During the Cold War.
B) Industrialized.
C) Capitalist.
D) Communist.
E) Developing nation.
F) Geographically located in either Africa, Asia, or South America.

Use this key to identify first, second, or third world countries.

In this lexicon, a first world country will be one to which these factors can be applied: A, B, and C.

Second world countries: A and D--the USSR, basically.

Third world countries: A, E, and F apply.

I may be cynical about the world I inhabit, but at least I know my prey.

Went to the bathroom at work. On the way back to my office had the desire to get some tea. Because I thought there was tea in my office I passed the kitchen without getting it. Got to my office and couldn’t find any tea there, so had to walk half a rope length back to kitchen to pick some up. Terrible day. It could of been worse though, if we did not have any cookies around here neither.

it's a dry year, and i determined neither to water nor mow my lawn. the lawn includes things like common mallow, peppergrass, dandelion and wood sorrel, all quite edible, so i've let them live their annual cycles and harvested when appropriate. however, the lawn looks a horror. my valley neighbors tend to mind their own business about it. one even got curious about the mallow harvest. but i soon had a steady barrage of caballeros del cespéd come a-knocking, telling me in not very good english that they would be oh so happy to fertilize my lawn for me.

fertilize? with all that good stuff growing in it i need to fertilize?

never mind, my spanish isn't good enough to express the complex issues involved. then a memory came to me. you had to live through the 60s:

¡cuba si! ¡yanqui no!

i dove for the spanish dictionary.

¡pradera si! ¡cespéd no!

i posted this on a small, discreet postage stamp-sized piece of paper next to the front doorknob. i haven't had a knock since.

(look it up, first worlders, you need to get into this.)

Yes I am Ok.

Just a test to see if I have a heart.

They called me [not bad maybe 10 minutes], went to the window to the right of the information booth, the first attendant says and points: turn right, then another right past the elevators. I get to the first window and the attendant is washing down the counter between us with anti-bacteria wash and says” Don’t get near me, I am sick”. I thinking great and you are working here today. Anyway she directs me to the next window, and a second attendant directs me to the phone inside her area and then they make arrangements for tomorrow.Hang up the phone, walk out the door and a different nurse follows behind me, I see one of those wash your hands bottle and put a good amount on my hands then the nurse says “I need that as well”. Jokingly, I say to her about the magazine, she laughed and assume they will take the magazine away.

Will see tomorrow if it is still there.

Fine and dandy, just one of checkups Uncle Sam wants to make sure you are still alive. Thanks for asking.

from wiki, on the death of edward abbey:

Edward Abbey died on March 14, 1989, at the age of 62, in his home in Tucson, Arizona. His death was due to complications from surgery; he suffered four days of esophageal hemorrhaging, due to esophageal varices, a recurrent problem with one group of veins.

Showing his sense of humor, he left a message for anyone who asked about his final words: "No comment." Abbey also left instructions on what to do with his remains: Abbey wanted his body transported in the bed of a pickup truck, and wished to be buried as soon as possible. He did not want to be embalmed or placed in a coffin. Instead, he preferred to be placed inside of an old sleeping bag, and requested that his friends disregard all state laws concerning burial. "I want my body to help fertilize the growth of a cactus or cliff rose or sagebrush or tree." said the message.

For his funeral, Abbey stated "No formal speeches desired, though the deceased will not interfere if someone feels the urge. But keep it all simple and brief." He requested gunfire and bagpipe music, a cheerful and raucous wake, "[a]nd a flood of beer and booze! Lots of singing, dancing, talking, hollering, laughing, and lovemaking."

A 2003 Outside article described how his friends honored his request:

"The last time Ed smiled was when I told him where he was going to be buried," says Doug Peacock, an environmental crusader in Edward Abbey's inner circle. On March 14, 1989, the day Abbey died from esophageal bleeding at 62, Peacock, along with his friend Jack Loeffler, his father-in-law Tom Cartwright, and his brother-in-law Steve Prescott, wrapped Abbey's body in his blue sleeping bag, packed it with dry ice, and loaded Cactus Ed into Loeffler's Chevy pickup. After stopping at a liquor store in Tucson for five cases of beer, and some whiskey to pour on the grave, they drove off into the desert. The men searched for the right spot the entire next day and finally turned down a long rutted road, drove to the end, and began digging. That night they buried Ed and toasted the life of America's prickliest and most outspoken environmentalist.

Abbey's body was buried in the Cabeza Prieta Desert in Pima County, Arizona, where "you'll never find it." The friends carved a marker on a nearby stone, reading:

EDWARD
PAUL
ABBEY
1927—1989
No Comment

In late March, about 200 friends of Abbey's gathered near the Saguaro National Monument near Tucson and held the wake he requested. A second, much larger wake was held in May, just outside his beloved Arches National Park, with such notables as Terry Tempest Williams and Wendell Berry speaking.

I had 2 Siberians (a black and a red) who were both tied up outside my house. A local roaming cat came to tease the black as she had the day before. Unfortunately, she didn't know that the tease radius for the black fell within the munch radius of the red. I ended up taking that cat to the emergency vet at about 9:00pm, and then ended up paying for it to be euthanized and then a fee to take care of the body. I put up notes around the neighborhood but no one claimed it. It did have a collar but no tags, and it wasn't like a dirty feral kitty. My Siberian was just being the wolf that she was, it was too bad all the way around.

I'm also not as satisfied as I'd like to be with my google homepage layout.

And damn if they didn't shrink the size of those Odwalla bottles but keep the price almost the same.

And when I go to the climbing gym, they have a $5 minimum credit card fee. So when I buy a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip organic local cookie, and a Mo Beta Odwalla for the anti-oxidant boost, it only costs $4.75! So now I either have to buy another cookie which is a little more than I want, or another damn Odwalla bottle (which I sorta need since the bottles shrank, but really two is too much) or I have to buy more tape but I already bought some last week and tape is Rob Halford aid. So I've got no damn alternative but to donate 25 cents to the Access Fund to get my total up to $5.

Un-fricken-believable.

hey there say, biotch...

as to this quote:

People who are just sitting in thier cars of store parking lots (WTF are they doing?).

here's one factual answer:

a friend of mine, from calif, has too many kids in her house to have a peaceful converstaion--when she is on the phone they 'swamp' her for:

"where's this..."
"when's supper..."
"will you drive me to town..."
"can you wash this, i need it now..."

etc, etc....

she CALLS me from the grocery parking lot, where she has peace to talk for up to two hours...
odd but true... :O

nowwwwwwww you have a one less 'wonder' in the world, as to this...

:))

oh, say, all--
as to 'first world problems'... if i ever get tempted over such,
i quickly remember--focus on GENERAL troubles, common to all, carry on with each day's, thankful for what they are, and all else will fall into place as 'non troubles' in the full
scheme of things...

no doubt, we have it easy.

This is a real (underlined) First World Problem.
My tv is on "the box," the one I had to get to keep getting broadcast reception.
I am on the computer, watching the 49er game on the stupid tv.
Aside from the piss-poor, constantly interrupted reception, which is a hallmark of this "improved" method of airing programs, there is a big, big problem.
Every so often, when the interruptions peak, the box switches the program to a Spanish language channel.
What I found is that by turning off the box, I can recover the signal from the NBC affiliate.
BUT I'M MISSING TOUCHDOWNS, not to mention beer and truck commercials.
It's enough to frost my whine glass filled with Merlot, a wine best drunk at ambient temp, maybe slightly chilled.

My problem is, "Why didn't someone tell me that the "IT" wasn't "all that?."

That IT was only some of that.

I'm speaking of the venerable* Wes n' Wanda's IT CLUB in El Cerrito. I met Chuck Pratt there one night and solved all the world's problems. I never drank with him again. Late '73.

I told Pratt IT wasn't "all that" and he agreed it was a big problem. I forgot his solution.

I want to lodge a protest. Why did the ALDS ballgames stop recording? I did not see the end of 2 ballgames in the playoffs!!! For a woman who shares the same birthday as Derek Jeter, this is a catastrope. Must I stay at home to watch them in real time? SHall I take time off from my job to race home to see the game? Must I stop climbing so that I see the game in real time?

Oh - maybe I need to extend the recording option on the DVR to stop later........Stop Rant. Start New Rant.

Still protesting because I can't record The Voice, Dancing with the Stars and the Playoffs simultaeously. How can one choose between baseball, watching the frenchman exude charisma in motion, and see hopefulls singing their hearts out?

Several grocery store owners claim Norway’s dairy conglomerate Tine, which regulates and controls the national market, still isn’t managing to produce enough butter to meet demand. Meanwhile, Tine’s role as market regulator remains under fire, food prices have been confirmed as the highest in Europe, and now the dairy has even landed in trouble over a controversial promotion.

Newspaper Aftenposten reported Wednesday that supplies of butter on grocery store shelves, especially in Oslo, aren’t lasting until the next delivery. Both the NorgesGruppen chain, which owns Kiwi, Spar, Meny, Joker and Ultra stores among others, report they’ve run empty for butter during the run-up to the Christmas holidays.

Canadian Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve Theft: Police Close In On Culprits

MONTREAL - There has been a break in the case of a massive maple syrup heist, with police announcing that a months-long multi-jurisdictional search has yielded three arrests and the seizure of millions' worth of stolen sticky stuff.

Three people were nabbed Tuesday in connection with the theft of a large quantity of the national condiment from a warehouse in Quebec.

About 2.7 million kilos of maple syrup, worth up to $18 million, was reported missing after a routine inventory check last summer.

Or, if your preferred unit of measurement is pancakes, the stolen amount would have been enough to dump a one-tablespoon topping on a whopping 183 million flapjacks.

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/12/18/maple-syrup-theft-arrests_n_2322943.html

And then there's Apuckalypse Now, where the owners and players went on strike, and no one cared.

I wouldn't have to suffer so much if I had a wifi-connected smart fridge that detects the absence of eggs and places an order for delivery on Christmas morning. My evening is not much different. Since I went away for New Year's I promised my mom/grandma to spent some time with them. Highlight of the evening was showing them a video of some TV show host climbing Lost Arrow Spire. Since I climbed it, they wanted to see more details, and this video does an ok job explaining. My mom didn't quite understand what was the point of climbing a wall to the spire, if I had an easy hike to the actual high point of the 'mountain' (Yosemite point). Didn't know how to explain...

BUT, now it's set to the Pearl Jam station, which is really cool but I am sick of listening to Pearl Jam 'cuz all their songs are the same. I was hitchhiking back from Yosemite once (couldn't afford the gas let alone the car), and this Israeli guy gives me a ride (he negotiated for a place to stay). His family would be what we would consider upper class. During the long drive home I'm telling him about the problems I'd had with my moms used portable dishwasher and was asking for his help. (he was in university at the Technion and was also clearly smarter than me). He was unable conceive of the issue or the repair and told me that NO ONE had dishwashers back home. NO ONE. Too expensive. I'm like, "but my mom is poor and has a portable dishwasher....uhhh. " It made me consider the US standard of living.

Why do we need stickers on "fresh" produce?

Isn't picking, washing, sorting, and boxing processing enough? I guess not. Now, that label needs a sticker on it, too.

Chiquita Banana stickers were fun. And you didn't have to peel the sticker off if you didn't feel like it because nobody ever eats the banana peel.

Now, I suspect because the cashier can no longer be bothered to know the difference between a Poblano Chile and a potato, a grocer who sells produce without stickers stuck to it stands a good chance of going broke.

replacing the Comcast cable TV with an antenna...

the "basic package" is just now encrypted, but the box they sent doesn't work... blows the local repeater out of the water and takes down the internet...

calling Comcast is a joke, waited 2.5 hours and didn't get through... last time this happened they said "nothing was wrong" while I watched the power levels to the modem slowly creep up, didn't expect anything different this time...

so I went out and got an antenna, pointed it at the Sutro Tower, and now I can receive more than the basic package without paying for it...

the joy is going to the Comcast store and canceling the basic TV, keeping the internet service...

definitely a first world problem...

First World Problems - that popped into my brain during a very stressful day when:

1) New floaters in left eye - emergency eye appointment wrecked my achedule at work. Verdict - normal aging

2) Took 2 hours to go 8 miles across town to private dance lesson. THe water main was broken, and I was stuck in that traffic.

3) My husband was alone at the dance lesson with the "blonde", young dance instructor.

4) The man in the 4 day old truck fell asleep while in the traffic jam. His truck rear-ended my car - and I was pushed into the car ahead of me. All 3 cars were fine. All people fine - except the major inconvenience of not moving for nearly 2 hours.

5) While driving home from dinner after the private dance lesson (which I missed leaving my 56 year old husband alone with the 30 year old blonde), I discovered that I left my $500 reading glasses with the photosensitive, anti-scratch surface at the restaurant. Had to return to the resaurant to collect the forgotten glasses.

Enough first world problems for one day.

Aston Martin is recalling all 17,000 cars it has built since 2008 because a
Chinese company substituted some cheap chinese plastic in place of the
specified Dupont for an integral part of the accelerator pedal. And you
know that pedal is imnportant to Aston owners.

There are reports of widespread wailing and gnashing of teeth right across
Beverly Hills as owners realize that they will have to drive the Bentley for
a week, or more!

Oh, the humanity!

Mr Savage,

My first "smart" phone crapped out in Santa Cruz a couple weeks ago, just as I needed it to help me navigate through the maze that is that city.

So I threw it in the ocean off Pigeon Point! One of the most satisfying moments in recent memory. Can you hear me NOW?

( I was eligible for a free "upgrade", so it wasn't like I needed it anymore )

The Eggheads at the Alderwood Mall in Mukilteo set me up with another one, and they took the time to show me how to use it to get e-mail - it's 2014 after all - and explained syncing photos.

Good enough. First batch of photos loaded fine. No slip or sh#t.

The second batch of photos I loaded erased the first batch! WTF?

I lost nothing, because Back-Up is my middle name. But DAMN the work-around required is one convoluted process.

And I was woken four times the first night I had the damn thing, because the phone rang every time Sierra Trading Post, Amazon, or whoever sent me e-mails, before I finally took it outside and put it in the truck.

If Steve Jobs wasn't dead, I'd have something to say about him, too.

And I'm not exactly a luddite, either.....but the level of time and effort it takes to figure out the less-than-intuitive structure & function of iTunes really swings the benefit:effort ratio the other direction.

MisterE, that made me laugh and smile . . . Oh, I forgot my first world problem.

That Microwave thingy, may be for you but mine won't show me the timeand count down back wards at the same time

My kids changed the password to turn on the tablet, little fookrrz, At Two o'clock in the morning the blood pressure spike of the three try's and tablet shut down was going to have me freaking out.

As a rule I have a stout drink on Friday nights and post on P.T.P.P. while drinking thread (Wiz califa) but not tonight Yet,

I would normally turn on the tablet at two in the morning for a minute or two and fall right back to sleep in front of the open screen.

Quonk-out so to speak.

Not getting my way! No fridaynite posting while drinking, drinking or not, has turned the first world problem of not knowing the password an hour ago into this insomnia induced Rant.

Now the old dog - she is scuffling about, what would she do if I did not get back up?cross her legs?
So I sing out "Dawg I'm coming"- she understands around four thousand words and phrases but only listens when she wants to, typical teenager, she is fifteen!

Having a hundred pounds of dawg.
A fifteen year old girl dawg that is finally becoming a beetch.
having a 15yr old girl dog that looks way to scary at night when she likes to wander off down the street with a blinking orange lite on her collar.

Went to bed at 11:30pm Friday.
Spent Saturday from 2am to 8pm taking care of a barfing two-year-old.
Got the go-ahead to climb with the boys Sunday. Drove hours to the currently favored desert crag. Parked. Got out. Got the call from the fiance: kid's ok, but she's sick and needs me home ASAP, panic intoned. Broke a few speed laws and common sense limits to get home. Spent the rest of sunday playing nurse-maid, laundry technician, and janitor. Ya see, the kids weren't all quite better, they both have the squirts, along with their mother, and in mom's state of affairs she did not notice the blown-out diaper get sat upon around the living room.
Scrub. Bleach. Wash up. Change clothes. Wash up again. I've washed my hands so many times in the last two days my skin is worse than two days of jamming my hands in bird-sh#t-smeared cracks. Changed clothes four times today.
But on top of it all, I had to bail on the partners. And one had to give the other a ride to my place to get his car, probably and extra hour and a half to his trip home.
Another BEAUTIFUL weekend F*#KED up by daycare-plague. Third time this year.

My "water feature" is a breeding ground for mosquitos! I will soon have a third world problem and need to take anti-malaira pills.

Quick fix is to drain the water and shop vac any muck out, perhaps even give it a power washing. Let everything dry out, then refill with fresh water. Consider adding a chlorination or filtration system.

As for my own FWP, you misspelled "malaria." Yeah, I'm one of those people.

No "Crema" on my espresso.

A very serious problem.

Got a DeLonghi Magnifica for the office. Produces a butt-load of thick crema. So nice. Built in grinder, pressure, all perfect. Retail was $1200 but got it on sale for only $400.

Now I need one for the house because I'm running an old Krups Il Primo. You know the kind, the little black thing from the 1980's. Grinder is no good either. Coffee is ok but no crema. The problem is I look at stuff in the stores, on line, etc but it all costs way too much and crema is NO guarantee.

I'd go for another DeLonghi but I need to get a really good deal.

I've been agonizing over this problem for several years now.

I have really good coffee too. It really deserves better treatment.

Bracelets with expensive wristwatches are all the rage. I finally got a load of manly bracelets this weekend so "problem solved."

So guys, if you are not hitting the town with 2 or more man-bracelets snuggled up with your snobby wrist watch - you have a fashion problem.

I recommend 2-3 with the watch and 1-4 on the opposite wrist. It is especially cool with formal wear but is essential with high fashion wear.

PEOPLE - THIS IS NOT A BAGEL!

When I lived in Millbrae I had to drive 30 minutes to Palo Alto to get a decent bagel from Izzy's.

Now I have to drive all the way into LA to the Bagel Broker. Goldsteins in Arcadia makes an OK bagel but it's only a 7/10.

Dear customer,

I appreciate your interruption and interaction out of good intention. You overheard the conversation, however, you missed the first sentence the gentleman said to me, which is the most important part. The first thing he said to me is what the item is for and where he'd be using it.

Your recommendation is perfect for what you do, and what you think he is going to do. Nevertheless, not necessarily what he is looking for...

Yours faithfully,

The one thing I truly hate about Colorado is that (for some reason I've not been able to determine) we frequently catch rocks that crack windshields here. We're averaging more than one per year, to the tune of about $500 a pop. Our 2012 Escape has a major crack right now, and it's just extended up to the center of my field of vision, so it's gotta go.

But the second we replace it, some random rock from the heavens is going to crack that brand new windshield.

Whyyyy does this keep happening to me?

Big Banks Big Dollars. Wells Fargo: both accounts

I recently received a wire transfer of some money.
They charged the person making the transfer $30. This from a Wells Fargo "private account" meaning there are big bucks in this account.
They charged me for receiving the transfer $15. Maybe being nice because there aren't big bucks in my account. Sure.

This is absurd! The problem is the fees come just under the radar of "is this worth my time to gripe to a big bank"?

Customer service/satisfaction run amok.
I recently bought a new 4Runner. I like it. I've been a loyal 4Runner owner for many many years.
The sale was easy. I had to wait awhile for it but I knew that when I ordered it.
It arrived, I paid. I'm happy. Thanks all around. (I even rang the f'ing bell at the dealership because they have this "thing" about ringing a bell when a sale is made)
Now, in the 10 days since purchasing I have been INUNDATED with "customer satisfaction" follow up. From the dealer, the salesman, the lady I gave my check to, local and regional Toyota, maybe even Japanese headquarters. And then all the peripherals. Now everything comes with satellite radio so a whole bunch of customer service/satisfaction stuff to get that system all initialized.
Toyota, I'm happy. I really am. I've always loved my 4Runners. The radio works just fine.
Now, please go away. I don't want exhaust tips, special mats, cargo drawers or locking hubcaps. I just want to open my email and not see that funky bull horns logo.

Here's my first world problem that popped up just yesterday. Took my brand new Head Monster 88s out yesterday and the very first ski run had one of them release after I slammed into a bump skiing normal and like usual. The snow was super fluffy and getting my ass up and back into the ski was a lot of effort! I had last years Rossignol Soul 7s still in the car for backup but I'd woke up late and the the car was parked wayyyy on the other side of the parking lot and I didn't want to stop skiing to walk all that way. Unfortunately, and I'd also left my Swiss made Stockli Stormrider 95s at home and they'd have been perfect for the conditions.

Hope that keeps the spirit of the thread alive:-)

But the wrong kind are the right kind for the holiday decorations but they are filled with the stuff in the warehouse so I have to take the stuff out of the wrong tubs and put it in the right tubs so I can bring the wrong tubs home where they are right for the decorations.

I am a Nikonian and have followed the rumors for some time. It sounded like you had something definitive. I'm a long time D800E shooter and skipped the D810. The replacement will need to be something really special to upgrade. In particular, it will need to have better high ISO capability - the D800E is rated higher than the D810 by DXO marks. I teach nightscape photography for Joshua Tree National Park, so that's important for me.

In 2015, US Senator Bob Menendez (NJ) was indicted for bribery. He accepted money to his campaign and other, non-reported funds and services. A Doctor Melgen gave Menendez these funds to influence the Senator to use his "authority as a US Senator to promote Melgen's personal and business interests".

How does this differ from 23 GOP US Senators, including Cory Gardner (CO), receiving large sums of money from Betsy DeVos and family, while these senators were to vote on her confirmation to the Department of Education?

Cory Gardner's campaign, according to Huffington Post 2/7/2017, recieved $49,800. Would a gift of this amount influence an average person's attitudes toward the gift-giver? You bet. Would it influence a Senator to vote to confirm Betsy DeVos, who Sen. Franken has described as "the most unqualified Cabinet nominee I have ever encountered".

The greatest consolation for Sen. Gardner's Colorado constituents is that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) got $98,300 from DeVos and family. I guess that makes Sen. Gardner only 51% as "bought" by DeVos.

If this sounds like democracy in action, ok.

If this sounds like bribery, let's get busy.[/quote]

Compound Problem

I was making a burger. I'd made the patty and set it to cook and reached for the soap...it was used up, bottle empty.

I went to the bathroom but the door wouldn't open...greasy hands.

I went back to the kitchen, hoping hot water would do the job...it didn't. The hot water takes five minutes in the kitchen sink to become hot.

I'd wasted nearly five minutes and the burger was being slightly burnt, so I reached for the spatula and dropped it...greasy hand.

I picked up the spatula with a pair of tongs, used the tongs to turn the burger.

I used an old paper towel from the garbage in the kitchen on the bathroom door, as I was fresh out of them, too.

I washed my hands, dried them, and went out and turned that burger onto a plate and that

...was that.

The first part of my trip was on a six seater prop and the pilots looked like they were 16. I thought the plane was going to shatter into a million pieces. Sixty minutes of extreme turbulence. I kept my eye on interstate 15 convinced that's where we'd be landing!

Went to the gym after 2 days of above average cardio days in the mountains and couldn't send 2/5 v5s I tried. Got bummed. Went to work the day after in the ED and saw a post gun shot cardiac arrest in which the young guy's chest was cracked in last attempts to save his life. The kind if emergent thoracotomy that he had had about 5% survival rate. In the end he was dead. Completely nude, with lungs, heart, everything in his chest visible and blood everywhere...maybe not sending boulder problems in the gym is not all that bad...

Ok ok I fell for the hype and got an Instant Pot.

It’s not bad, mainly a pressure cooker on steroids. We’ve made some pretty tasty meals in it FAST. Like really FAST. I have avoided pressure cookers most of my life after seeing one blow its top right up into a kitchen ceiling. Luckily no one had their head near it.

This instant pot does a million things I’ll probably never use but it wasn’t too expensive and many of my boat friends spoke fondly of it, especially where space is a premium. You can just dump everything in, set it and in 10 to 15 minutes, voila! A meal.

In the paper if you wanted to cheat you had to turn to the last page, turn it upside down and look at a facsimile the size of a postage stamp, or worse yet, wait until the next day.

I try not to cheat but I rationalize by the fact I’m old, running out of time and I’ll learn something anyway. ;).

one section of transcript from
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/myanmars-killing-fields/transcript/

MOHAMMAD AYAS:
[subtitles] I was watching through a hole. I saw everything clearly.
NARRATOR:
Villagers say this is one of the soldiers who led the attack that day, Sergeant Ba Kyaw. We interviewed nine residents who identified him and said they knew him well. He was a member of the army’s Unit 564, based here, just south of the village.
MAN:
[subtitles] I had known Ba Kyaw for six years. I used to deliver things for him.
NARRATOR:
Witnesses say Ba Kyaw and other soldiers rounded up dozens of men and took them to the village leader’s compound.
Aisha Begum was at home with her sons.
AISHA BEGUM:
[subtitles] As my child was being taken away, I grabbed his hand. He was crying, “Mom, they’re taking me.” I thought they might kill him, so I told him to pray to God.
NARRATOR:
The men and boys taken to the compound were forced to lay face down. Mohamadul Hassan was among them. He says he had nothing to do with the militants.
MOHAMADUL HASSAN:
[subtitles] They tied our hands and made us lie down in the courtyard. I thought I was going to die.
NARRATOR:
He says the men were kept tied up in the courtyard for two hours. Then he says an officer took a phone call. Other survivors have given journalists and human rights investigators similar accounts of what happened next.
MOHAMADUL HASSAN:
[subtitles] When he returned, he shouted, “OK, begin!” Then they started slitting people’s throats.
NARRATOR:
This video of him was taken a few days after the attack. He says he was shot twice and left for dead. Hiding on the roof, Ayas says he watched as some of the men were killed in the courtyard.
MOHAMMAD AYAS:
[subtitles] Ba Kyaw started slaughtering people. Some villagers said, “We are not your enemies.” But the soldiers said, “All Muslims must be wiped out from Myanmar. There’s no place for Muslims here.”
NARRATOR:
In all, eight witnesses told us that Sergeant Ba Kyaw participated in the killings. He’s also been named in other news and human rights reports.
We weren’t able to speak to Ba Kyaw, and the Myanmar military wouldn’t respond to the allegations against him. They insist their troops did not harm civilians. But survivors estimate at least 80 people were executed in the courtyard alone.
AISHA BEGUM:
[showing picture] [subtitles] This is my eldest son, this is the middle one, and he’s the youngest. This is their father.
NARRATOR:
Aisha says that her husband and three of her children were among them.
AISHA BEGUM:
[subtitles] This is my 11-year-old who was killed.
NARRATOR:
The Myanmar military says that it was conducting a clearance operation to rid Rakhine of terrorists. But video shot at the scene supports eyewitness claims that many civilians were killed.
MAN:
[subtitles] There’s a hat laying there..
NARRATOR:
Nurul Hakim went back to Monu Para with a camera once the soldiers had left, risking his life. His footage is dated August 28th, one day after the killings. This is the first time he’s been interviewed.
NURUL HAKIM:
[subtitles] This is Monu Para village. This is the blood of the people who were slaughtered at the base of the trees. Look, it’s an ocean of blood. We found 66 patches of blood. People had been slaughtered, and the blood had flowed.
NARRATOR:
Nurul and other witnesses told us more than 100 people were killed throughout the village, a number that is consistent with subsequent investigations by human rights groups.
NURUL HAKIM:
[subtitles] They tied the men’s hands with the women’s scarves and made them lie face down on the ground. All the scarves they tied them with were still there.
NARRATOR:
Nurul also found body parts.
NURUL HAKIM:
[subtitles] This is a piece of scalp I found.
NARRATOR:
Elsewhere in the village, he filmed the body of a boy who appears to have been shot in the head.
NURUL HAKIM:
[weeping] [subtitles] I saw this myself, the blood of many people. I found their ID cards. I found the clothes of people I know. I saw it with my own eyes.
NARRATOR:
In another part of Monu Para, a villager filmed a body being dug up. The wounds are still fresh.
EVAN WILLIAMS, Correspondent:
The dead man─ do you know who this is?
MOHAMMAD AYAS:
[subtitles] The dead man is Humayun. He was a street vendor. He sold fried rice.
NARRATOR:
Ayas says he had seen this man alive in the courtyard before the army’s executions began.
EVAN WILLIAMS:
How old was he?
MOHAMMAD AYAS:
[subtitles] He was 22 years old. He was a good man. He prayed regularly and obeyed his parents.
NARRATOR:
By now, the Myanmar military’s campaign had spread across the whole of northern Rakhine. Over the next few days, dozens of Rohingya villages were attacked and burned to the ground. On August 27th, members of 33rd Light Infantry Division moved into the village of Chut Pyin.

NEWSCASTER:
[subtitles] Bengali terrorists started shooting in the village of Chut Pyin.
[subtitles] The 33rd Light Infantry Division fired back. There is now a fierce battle going on. The Bengali terrorists are also burning houses.

NARRATOR:
But the footage filmed by Rohingya activists tells a different story. Sabo was filming in the nearby village of Ah Tet Nan Ya as survivors from Chut Pyin streamed in.
SABO:
[subtitles] They were all in a terrible state. They were traumatized after seeing brothers and sisters killed. Only God knows how much they suffered.
[subtitles] Did the military shoot you?
WOUNDED MAN:
Yes, they shot me while I was running away.
SABO:
Did the bullet come out?
WOUNDED MAN:
Yes, it went in here and came out.
NARRATOR:
He filmed dozens of wounded men, women and children, many of them shot in the back as they fled. We tracked down some of the survivors seen in Sabo’s footage, who all independently recounted how the military attacked civilians.
MAN:
[subtitles] Two of my relatives died and she was shot.
NARRATOR:
The video shows a villager named Jahin Hussein and his niece, Jamila Khatun. She’s 16 years old and has been shot in the back.
JAHIN HUSSEIN:
[subtitles] It’s been stitched. We were able to remove the bullet. She is in a lot of pain.
NARRATOR:
We found them in the refugee camps in Bangladesh.
MAN:
[subtitles] One of my brothers was shot dead. My baby daughter was shot in the head.
WOMAN:
[subtitles] I was shot and fell in the rice field. I could not get up, I was in so much pain. Then four soldiers raped me. Women were raped and then they died.
WOMAN:
[subtitles] About seven of us women tried to run, but we were rounded up and taken into some bushes.
NARRATOR:
Nur Begum says that when the women tried to fight back, a soldier shot one of them dead.
NUR BEGUM:
[weeping] [subtitles] A soldier cut off her breast. He held it up like this and it was shaking. He said if we screamed, they would do the same to us. They did whatever they wanted. Four or five soldiers held me down and raped me.
NARRATOR:
Multiple survivors from Chut Pyin told us the soldiers engaged in mass rape in the village. Among the survivors filmed by Sabo was village leader and medic Rashan Ali.
RASHAN ALI:
[subtitles] We don’t have any medicine. We don’t have the money to buy it.
NARRATOR:
He says he did what he could to treat the victims.
RASHAN ALI:
[subtitles] I treated 92 people there. Many women were raped and killed. We stitched them up. They were lacerated. Their breasts were cut. I treated them with whatever I had.
NARRATOR:
He said many of the rape victims were children.
RASHAN ALI:
[subtitles] Most of them were 12 or 13 years old. Some of them could not bear it and they died.
NARRATOR:
As the soldiers swept through Chut Pyin, 9-year-old Arefa Khatum was hiding at school.
AREFA KHATUM:
[subtitles] People in the village were surrounded and could not escape. My father was killed and also one of my brothers. I was also shot.
NARRATOR:
When the soldiers reached the school, Arefa says she was shot through the leg. The bullet shattered her bones.
AREFA KHATUM:
[subtitles] I saw five dead people who’d been shot. I saw the blood flowing from the school.
NARRATOR:
What happened next is horrific. Arefa’s mother, Rashida Khatum, says she and her son were rounded up by soldiers with a large group of women and children.
RASHIDA KHATUM:
[subtitles] They took beautiful girls to the school compound. We older ladies were sitting with the children and the soldiers were surrounding us.
There were small children like him. They hadn’t done anything. Then they snatched the children from their mothers’ laps. If any mother cried out for their baby, they shot them. They killed 10 women for that. I saw it with my own eyes.
NARRATOR:
Rashida says the soldiers dragged the children and babies to nearby burning houses. She says they then threw them into the flames alive.
RASHIDA KHATUM:
[subtitles] When the children tried to get out of the fire, they pushed them back in with bamboo sticks. There were some older, some his age and some younger. Some were six months, some three months. Twenty to thirty were taken.
NARRATOR:
Rashida says she saved her own son by hiding him under her shawl.
Sixty-year-old Umul Kulsum says her grandson and granddaughter were ripped from her arms.
UMUL KULSUM:
[subtitles] Johora was three years old. Ilias was five. They were burned to death. They are not coming back. They were screaming as they burned.
NARRATOR:
Ahmed Hussein, one of the village leaders, is compiling a record of everything that happened in Chut Pyin.
AHMED HUSSEIN:
[subtitles] [with map] This is Chut Pyin. Some military came from this road. Some of came from that one. Some women were taken across this field to the army outpost. They raped the women there, then killed them. My sister was raped with seven other women. She was shot and died the next day.
NARRATOR:
He showed us where the women were held with their children.
AHMED HUSSEIN:
[subtitles] This is the big fallen tree where the women were being held. The soldiers snatched the small children from there and took them over here. They threw them into burning houses here. All the children were taken from here and thrown into the fire.
NARRATOR:
Ahmed is collecting the names of all the missing. So far, he’s identified 358 people that he believes were killed in the attack. We asked him how many of the dead were children.
AHMED HUSSEIN:
[subtitles] Ninety-nine were killed. There aren’t many older children because they could run away. Many of them were only babies.
NARRATOR:
By early September 2017, an exodus was under way. In a single month, around half a million refugees crossed the border into Bangladesh. It was only now that the Rohingya crisis became world news.
Under international pressure, the Myanmar military would eventually conduct an internal investigation. It concluded there was no rape, no burning and no killing of civilians by its soldiers. They maintain that the campaign was a counter-insurgency clearance operation against Bengali terrorists.
ZEID RA’AD AL HUSSEIN, U.N. Hight Commissioner, Human Rights:
Rubbish. I mean, this is not counter-insurgency. Counter-insurgency means you go after the specific units that are involved. But rounding up civilians, you know, burning their houses, slicing the throats of children, you know, raping pregnant women and then disemboweling them─ I mean, how on earth is that counter-insurgency?
These were not sporadic acts, these were well organized, well thought through. Clearly, it didn’t seem to be an operation that was put together at the last moment. There is some design to this. This was a textbook case of ethnic cleansing.
NARRATOR:
As more survivors were reaching Bangladesh, the accounts of atrocities mounted. The worst known massacre of all happened in the village of Tula Toli. When soldiers attacked from the north, hundreds of Rohingyas fled eastward but were trapped by a bend in the river.
MAN:
[subtitles] Peace be upon you. We are from Tula Toli. Look, the women are fleeing from the gunfire. They’re setting fires from the north side. They’re trying to burn us out. They’re running towards the beach.
NARRATOR:
Survivors we interviewed told us this video was filmed downstream from Tula Toli. It shows the bodies of children and babies being recovered from the river.
MAN:
[subtitles] Put him here. Put him here. Oh, God! He’s been shot. He’s been shot. His brains are falling out!
NARRATOR:
The survivors from Tula Toli recognized some of the bodies in the video.
MUMTAZ BEGUM:
[subtitles] They threw my 5-year-old into the river. I had my two-year-old baby on my hip. They grabbed the baby and threw him on the fire. My 11-year-old boy was lying half-dead with his throat cut.
NARRATOR:
Mumtaz Begum says soldiers took her to a house with her only surviving daughter, Razeya.
MUMTAZ BEGUM:
[subtitles] The house was so full of dead bodies, we had to walk over them. As they raped me, my daughter was screaming, so they macheted her three times.
NARRATOR:
She says when the soldiers had finished, they locked the women inside the house.
RAZEYA:
[subtitles] They poured gasoline and set it on fire. Some of the women were still half-alive.
MUMTAZ BEGUM:
[subtitles] My daughter shook me and said, “Mom, get up. The house is on fire. You’re burning.”
MAN:
[subtitles] That evening, you could hear the women screaming in the burning houses. We lost all hope. The area was entirely filled with the bodies of burned people. It was all black.
NARRATOR:
Survivors from Tula Toli streamed across the river trying to escape. Witnesses told us that over a thousand people were killed in the village, a number consistent with reports from other journalists and human rights groups.
WOMAN:
[weeping] A daughter, a daughter-in-law, a grandchild and a son. They were shot and burned with gasoline.
NARRATOR:
Mumtaz says she managed to escape the burning house with her daughter. As she fled, she found her wounded son lying nearby.
MUMTAZ BEGUM:
[subtitles] My daughter said, “Brother, get up. Get up.” He said, “I can’t get up. My head is gone, I can’t get up.” [weeps]
AUNG SAN SUU KYI:
[September 19, 2017] The security forces have been instructed to exercise all due restraint and to take full measures to avoid collateral damage and the harming of innocent civilians.
NARRATOR:
Three weeks after the campaign began, Aung San Suu Kyi defended the military and claimed that operations in northern Rakhine had finished.
AUNG SAN SUU KYI:
There have been no conflicts since the 5th of September and no clearance operations.
NARRATOR:
But even as she spoke, the destruction continued. Satellite imagery shows that in the weeks after September 5th, numerous Rohingya villages were burned to the ground. We tried to get access to northern Rakhine, but the Myanmar military refused our request.

The latch on the door of my sister's microwave was malfunctioning. Since the repair cost was steep and she wanted a better looking one anyway she bought a new nice looking one.

Now the color of her stove/oven clashed with the new microwave so she bought a new fancier one that matched the color of the microwave.

And now the color of her old refrigerator really clashed bigtime - so she bought a really nicely colored new one that matched. Color coordination is really important! These 3rd world people just have no idea!
