The only time I went up the tram it was painful looking down on all that amazing rock right below the tram line that is closed to climbing. I will be in Palm Springs Thursday night and have Friday to climb. Rarely get down to So Cal except in winter and I am looking for the most convenient place (as we only have a day to climb) near Palm Springs to get out of the heat and get some climbing in, or bouldering if need be, on Friday before heading back up north on Saturday. Was hoping to try some place other than going to Idywild, which I have been to in the past. Anything up there, within easy access to the top of the tram, worth bringing a rope for? Is the best bouldering right near the top of the tram, or a bit of a hike/exploration?
When did they close the stuff in the Tram Canyon to climbing? Those granite outcrops sure look fine.

Tram is by far the most convenient climbing from Palm Springs. On a friday morning, you could be shoeing up in less than 30min from the hotel. The bouldering is scattered around near the top of the Tram. They have Tram guidebooks (cough) at the ranger bookstore - downstairs at the mountaintop tram station. Or, head down the path to the ranger wilderness station and ask the rangers, they will point you to some bouldering. There is much potential for roping up, although bolting is unlawful. Head down the concrete path and hook it to the right, go to the edge of the mountain and look down, there are some walls to be had there.

Nice shots.....
Adventurous One...... Ride the Tram, seconds before it enters the top station, look to the left and you see the top of "cauffman crag" ....
Cauffman is home to one of the best 5.11 one pitch climb in So. Cal. (IMHO) "It's always something" named for the late great Gilda Radner.
K. Solem put this up in the late 80 early 90s.
To find it: exit the tram and turn left (east) go a few hundred yards and a faint trail heads down hill past the east face of Cauffman ... look for a long crack that goes up out of view. The start is a squeeze chimney. I think this climb has only 1 or 2 bolts located up aways.
The folks who administer the Top of Tram (Cal State Parks) usta be the biggest a-holes ever. There was a purge of routes at one time and if they thought you looked like a climber .... well you got tooled... many times in same day, by same person!!!! (this happened to me).
Looks like that is all changed now. That would be a good thing if it is true. The tram is a really nice place.
RM. How is the access now? Any issues?

you can get a summer pass for 60 bucks. Great hiking up on the top. If you can get a driver it is cool to take the tram up and hike down Devils Slide trail, or do the reverse if you want more exercise. The most amazing view is at night, I like to go up for the day and eat dinner. Kinda pricey, but the foot is good. Apparently everything comes up on the tram, including water, there are water tanks built into the bottoms of the tram cars.
Look at wikipeda for the low down (deaths) on the tram :)

Tram is pricey, no doubt. There are some perks tho, it would be a bit of a putt to drive to the top of the mountain and back, with the Tram, you park at nearly sea-level in the blistering desert, and 12 minutes later, you're at 9000ft sub-alpine. Saves time, gas, and wear and tear to the sled.
The Lindner crack is above/behind Gluttony, Smoke on the Water is, uhhh, in an undisclosed location (look for me up there, I'll hit you with some clues!)
The rangers act tough, but they actually have alot of pride that the area has such good climbing. Bolting is still illegal, but I don't think they have had problems with bolters in decades.
The boulders are at about 9000ft. Summer is typically the season, but I have climbed there year-round on many years. The only hinderance is snow, when it get thick, its hard to get around. Even when its snowy and the dead of winter, it can still be tee shirt weather.

Thanks for the great pictures. I've been climbing in So Cal for ~13 years and never had the pleasure of wrestling those pebbles. I just did Cactus to Clouds 9 days ago and was ponding why I haven't been up there to boulder yet. I think I need to put it on the list of things to do this summer! I just bought your J-Tree guide, so if the bouldering guide is as good I'll pick one of those up as well!

A bit OT, but I once dicked around on an obvious boulder on the left side of the road up to the the base-station around '88. Smallish, but seemed pretty good as I remember. Never partook of the real destination boulders on top tho. Me an my brother rode the tram up to ski the sledding hill a couple times in the early 70s. There was a dope little warming hut with hot chocolate available.

Curious what the deal is with the climbing under the tram line? When I was up there about six years ago the tram operator said it was all off limits to climbing, but today someone that works at Nomads said he did not think it was closed to climbing. I would think all that stuff would have been explored/climbed bitd and would be a popular climbing destination if it were not off limits. What's the scoop? Woud sure be into coming back and spending a couple of weeks exploring the climbing there if it did not mean getting arrested.
And from the looks of these photos...the bouldering looks WORLD CLASS!! Palm Springs as a SUMMER climbing town.......hmm....

It is prohibited to enter/ascend/climb the gully that the Tram is located in. They say its because the gully is unstable, and there is constant rockfall. But I'm sure there are other liabilities that the Tram is concerned with. I always tell them that they should hire a team of climbers to climb the walls as a tourist attraction (like the Matterhorn at Disneyland).

Upthread Guy Keesee posted about a route I did in 1991, "It's Always Something" (RIP Gilda Radner.) It's in the next canyon south of the tram line, on the south face of Kaufman Crag, which is the pinnacle just southeast of the top of the tram.
The wall gets bigger as you descend the gulley, this route is not too far down. It starts with a bouldery overhang to a ledge. From the ledge a right leaning ramp passes a bolt. Higher up two more bolts protect the crux face moves to a rap anchor. It's a nice one pitch 5.11. A newer route shares the same start and goes up left past chipped holds and several bolts.
We did a few other routes there too, just uphill from IAS is "Corners Report," a perfect 5.10+ dihedral which has a unique and good ballnut placement.
The crag deserves further exploration.
I'm sure its all forgotten by now, but at the time we got the boot by the rangers because of an unfortunate incident. They were already fed up with us climbing there but then came the proverbial straw. But that's a story for a real, not a cyberspace campfire...

Don't think theres anyplace in PS to rent a pad. Joshua Tree Outfitters (a couple doors down from Nomad Ventures outside of JT) is the closest place I can think of to rent a pad.

if i were still in socal id probably be a tram regular now.
hardly ever climbed there in the 80s and 90s, though. too expensive when black mt was still free. and if you had a dirt bike at black and other places on the hill, you could ride straight to the boulders and get yr beer muscles on.
i think the pads also made a big difference-- we picked some of that low-hanging fruit on the obvious boulders with good landings, but a lot of stuff at tram seemed to be over talus or gins flakes. great spot, though.

A couple different angles of Lindner on that crack project - he had his hand on the lip at one point, but bailed due to a carne asada finger - he suggested that the line could be v9 - and he's no stranger to cracks!

Da Meat doing the FA of the Electric Eye v2 R
So the story goes like this -
I was out at Tram bouldering with a buddy who likes to go by the name Mullet. Now Mullet was the kind of guy that was into hard training, hard climbing, and hard spraying! On that day we found ourselves at the Boardwalk boulder and who should we run into - Meathead! Meat is one of those proud oldschoolers with a disdain for gym climbers or anything of modern design. Immediately there was friction between the two. Mullet, getting cocky cutting laps on the double digit terrain. And Meat just being himself. I think things broke down when Meathead accused Mullet of being nothing more than a gym climber. Mullet stormed off and after about 10minutes we hear all this grunting and f-bombs. We go over there and, I have no idea why, but Mullet is trying to send this unclimbed highball around the corner. He's yelling and hamming it up on the moves. After another 30 minutes or so, he declares that it will in fact go and that he's going to come back and toprope it before doing the "headpoint". Meat, now fully asleep under a rock, somehow senses his moment and he gets up, stumbles over and casually onsights the thing. Thats how the Electric Eye was born!

I remember doing this B-easy, now rated v-easy 31 years ago, it sure is harder 31 years later..

serious fogarty, you were bouldering at Tram 31 years ago? I am always looking for historical info!
Mullet - bet you gots a few good Oldskool stories..

by strange coincidence I just saw Buck, he's looking light and lean and putting up problems here in San Diego. Just FYI. :)
I'd love to head out to the tram, I'm a pretty poor dude so most of the time have to keep it a bit local (driving to the tram and shelling out for a ticket is expensive). But it looks world class! Love those mountains.

This Mullet started climbing in josh in 1976 6th grade, I love the Tram, when I was attending palm Springs High I worked 6 winters at the then ski center, now the adventure center. i have to complement you on your guide and effort, your book is the best bouldering guide ever published. I have great info that I will share with you some day, keep up the great work. now at age 48 I still enjoy climbing fun things.

GDavis: One option to avoid the cost is to hike up. Yes, it's hard, but it's free and you'll be much stronger for it! Arrange a meeting place with friends who will take the pads up, and get a super early start while it's still dark. Mid-summer is probably a bad idea, but fall would work. This is something I'd love to do someday. I've never had my ticket checked going down the tram. They might notice, but I highly doubt it.

Tram wildlife! Went around the corner to take a leak and came across this little guy. He must have been just minutes old, as he was still wet and could barely stand up. In hopes that the mother was still close by, we immediately packed it up and split.

Good stuff up there. I always preferred Black Mountain because I had a wild dog "with" me (somewhere), but I got a tour around the Tram a few times.

Just got up there for the first time last weekend, more for hiking than bouldering, but the stuff looked terrific. Can't wait to get back up there with a pad and some time to explore. The place is silly with awesome lines.
