I'm torn-- the commercial is great -- excellent footage of a classic route, but having a hard time reconciling this will the reality that is Citibank. Morally ambiguous, like much of life I guess. Citibank and it's brethren are evil, and while I hate that he's promoting them, I'm glad that if they are spending money on advertising, that it is ending up with Honnold..
Climb more, use the Visa less.

Mtucker sold out to the US goverment.....we all get to pay for him. If anyone doesn't like Citibank, or want a Citi card, it's easy: don't bank there. Don't get the Citicard with no blank out dates etc etc. Go elsewhere, there's lots of banks and Credit Unions you can chose from. However, we have no choice about paying for Mtucker, we must pay his salary: as with all US obligations that we are taxed for it's mandatory you pay taxes or you go to jail. I'll go with Honnold (a climber) and the voluntary choice to avoid Citi if I wish, as the clear winner on this one. Great commercial too.

Why bitch on this? Nothing to say on the trillions of our MANDATORY OR YOU GO TO JAIL tax dollars wasted on US adventurism and needless wars abroad that won't pay a nickle in return. We borrowed most of that scratch and it still needs to be paid back. I'd think bitching on this commercial is overlooking this huge and much more significant issue.

Maybe I watched the wrong commercial but it seemed to me the gal with Alex was featured almost more than he was. Alex didn't promote anything by talking. Promo talked about Citi points which I myself used to go to Belgium to visit my son and his family and cost me round trip @ $90.00.
Which of us have not used a card or bought from a company that does not tow the line of philosophy we do? Betcha' none of us are virgin.

It would be funny if they became an item due to getting to know each other that day. I don't know Alex, but saw him at the Facelift when Timmy O'Neill did that Talk Show sketch with him in it, and ever since I have been rooting for him to find a nice girl. Not to settle down, of course, but everyone deserves love.
As for c/cards - those who use the types with bonus points to make purchases, and then pay in full each month have my respect. I know someone who pretty much uses her card for everything(to the point of absurdness, such as going to dinner with a group and trying to finagle using her card to pay/collect cash form the rest, just for the points she'll get), but like Lynn, this person gains from the use. That she pays in full each month means she is actually getting more back than she put in. Better return than any bank will give on a savings account....

Everyone uses one credit card or another right? Whether we like it or not "the man" pretty much forces us to do so right? Difficult to do everything with just cash these days.
So, if it wasn't Citibank it would have been another card.
Might as well make a buck for doing what you are known to do, ie climbing.
Good for them. Hope they made a good $$$ deal and that they spend it wisely.
No one would know that the guy in the commercial is perhaps the world's most famous soloist ever (at least at this time), except for climbers. I hope Alex's time lasts a full life time. I'm inspired but I could never do what he does.

I had no idea who the 'actors' were in that commercial, but I did mention to my wife that CitiBank managed to get it right representing climbing in a TV ad. No wonder CB got it 'right'!
At the other end of the getting it right/wrong perspective, a recent cruise line commercial features some yahoo grinning as he does a swinging traverse on the climbing wall...that one makes me chuckle every time I see it.
The CB ad is awesome for the way it represents climbing technique, and for getting some world-class talent involved. Selling out? As others have mentioned, it looks like an honest day's work, and there's no shame in that.

And one question/revelation for those of you complaining: Back in September Chris Sharma accepted about 3,000 euros a day from Rupert Murdoch's oldest son as a guiding fee for a trip in Majorca. How do you feel about that?
My take is this: if you're in an influential position and you use your influence to promote positive activities, then the right thing to do is to try to accept any offers where its possible. When Chris took the money for guiding, he had the opportunity to influence one of the most controversial families in the world. Right on! I'm guessing, granted on a more superficial level, Alex and Katie felt that being in the commercial was a way to promote an activity they believe in. And, if they don't do it, someone else does. So why not take the pay check and increase the depth of your influence?

I generally agree with your position on things, but I have to say, and with all due respect.. there are a number of threads up now that have gotten so nasty with personal conflict that you are usually an energetic half of. I suspect I am not alone as someone who might post thoughtful comments but are really turned off by the personal attacks between you and skipt, chaz, and others and just stay away...Why not stay on topic, and battle it out with thoughtful posts, and keep the personal attacks off the threads. As with all conflicts, de-escalation begins at home...

Ditto, I bet you are a real nice person in person Phil. Take it easy on the screaming and name calling will ya. Study a Karl Baba post, he gets the info out in a way that he can actually change a few minds to his viewpoint, and you still want to tie in with him afterwards.
BTW, I'd like to thank Mtucker for linking the video. If he hadn't framed it in a contentious manner, we would have had nothing to add and it would have dropped off the front page in 10min or less LOLZ.

I'm torn...I do think it's a sellout to use a high profile add paid for from a bailout at the peoples expense, especially since the bank didn't suffer and many who bailed them still are. But at least we're paying for someone we like. I closed my bank accounts with Wells, got rid of my Citicorps card and bank locally. I certainly wouldn't wear a citcorp logo on my ass when I climb.....I personally try not to be a hypocrite but it's hard not to be tied in somehow. Just don't like the very public way it was done.....I think those of you still banking with the bailout banks are doing worse than what Honnold did.......

Tornado...is Peter Croft Twenty, attractive, been on the cover of National Geographic...this thread is a bunch of bitchin over someone who climbs better then most here, and made some freak'in money to pay the bills. Geez good for Alex....make more commercials..it least it takes the sport from the dirt to the people so they can ask questions about it. My son could careless about the bank ad the chick I think..but he recognized Alex right off the bat. He was excited about that!

A credit union is a NON PROFIT, and owned by the MEMBERS

A credit union is a co-operative, owned by its members. It is different from a business corporation in that it is one shareholder/one vote (usual co-op model) rather than one share/one vote (usual corporate model). Co-operatives tend to be more focused on serving their members, which may include more than just profit. But they do make profits, which are returned to members as patronage bonuses or dividends.
Shares in co-ops (and credit unions) usually aren't tradeable or very liquid, but can at least be redeemed when you stop being a member, or when dividend shares build up. But then, most shares in most corporations - those that aren't publicly traded - aren't very liquid either.
There are, of course, many gradations of co-ops, just as there are of corporations. But they're very often good places to do business, and be a member who benefits from it.
I do all my financial business with a local credit union, which has a good record in terms of all measures - social and environmental leadership, employees, financial responsibility, member relations, etc. They return a dividend every year, which is credited to my account, but which I can take out at any time. All I have to do is maintain a minimum share value.

I'll tell you what bugs me about it.
It is this: I'll bet anything that other people are making more off that add than either climber, the ones at risk. THAT is worth ranting about.
But as one of the (nominal) owners of the corporation I'd say; glad to have you on the team Alex, I've caught a few doozies and never dropped one. This end is good. Don't let the occupiers dissuade you from acquiring wealth. It is the physical reserve of freedom; the more you have the freer you are.
We still have a long way to go before Americans can capitalize on climbing the way some euros have.

I just watched the commercial, watching for technical correctness (was on digital tv, we re-wound it).
In general, the climbing was somewhat accurately represented. However, there was one short bit where the editor screwed up. The female climber (sorry don't remember her name) appeared to be on lead the whole commercial, but there was a really short clip where she was either suddenly following or had clipped something well over her head. It looked like she was following, which doesn't jive with the rest of the sequences of the commercial, where she always appeared to be leading.
Sorry to nitpick.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of us here on ST have worked on or in commercials or ads or stupid commercial films of one kind or another. Probably most of us would refuse to work for a tobacco company, but other than that... Well, if it buys another year in the dirt, who's going to turn it down?
Tami and I can kind of look down our noses at most of you (even though we're both short) cuz the big commercial we worked on actually saved our country, but the truth is we'd have done it anyway.

The route that they are climbing in the commercial is Ancient Art, but they did some close ups at Dead Horse Point. Off limits to climbing btw.
We found a bunch of bolted on holds on the rock where they filmed Mission Impossible.
Ol' Tom was doing the iron cross pretty much where Alex is on the arete.
He's a super cool dude.

That Arri setup makes me drool a bit. I got to use an SR3 in school back in the day unsupervised (shoot for PBS I got to help on wrapped a day early and the DP (my prof) let me use it before bring it back to the rental house). It was like someone threw me the keys to a Ferrari and said "have it back in the morning with a full tank of gas."
That was a long time ago....
Film shoots operate in a world outside the "norm". If most people knew what went into making ANY professional level commercial (let alone a feature film) they'd have an appreciation for even the worst B-Comedy at the theater.
Looks like a fun time. Good for Alex, Katie and all the behind the scenes climbers for making their passion pay some bills!

When I climbed Ancient Art several years ago, the capstone was loose. But I don't remember it tilted at a 45 degree angle as in the end of the commercial. Is the camera angle causing an illusion?

Remember Nancy Feagin taking the whipper?
MI 2 was shot on several different "lines", some on the west side but others where you can see the potash ponds.
But there actually is a real climbing route on Deadhorse which has been declared off limits because (get THIS rationale) they worry people trying to watch climbers below will fall.

Ron, I am not sure what Nancy Feagan Movie you are talking about.
I just rewatched the Tom Cruise clip. Yeah He's all over the place on that wall. Did you work on that? There were a lot of bolted on holds and a lot of empty holes.
There is also a sick looking finger crack about a pitch down. I'm might be able to get permission to go down and clean the holds off. Maybe take a detour and check that crack out.

Alex is an amazingly Zen climber and any one of us should be lucky enough to attract national sponsors. What an awesome privelege to find supporters who make it possible for those truly gifted to use this precious short time on earth to excel at at something we all love and are passionate about. I am amazed by Alex and those before him and those who will follow in his enormous footsteps.
