After 20+ years of climbing I ended up pulling the ultimate rookie move by falling with the rope behind my leg.I fell about twenty feet, head first, and slammed into the wall resulting in a collapsed lung, punctured spleen, chipped vertabrae, and four broken ribs.Several folks helped extricate me from the Gorge(litter and all).Apparently I lost about five quarts of blood internally and am lucky to be writing this.I just want to HUGELY thank all the folks who helped extricate me.Thank you very much. This was also a reminder about how great the climbing community is.You guys rule!!!Thanx again.Kirk Sager,Bishop,ca.

Get well quick bro.

Sorry to hear about the woes. I had a first after 33 yrs of climbing. Mangled finger, and the chunk I pulled off broke my partners arm. I ended up upside down also, but not because of the rope. I was high stepping when the hold broke and I launched out backward. Yikes.

Heal fast.

Nice on you Cragman and Flanders

The only places I'd seen or heard of litters was down at Suicide and at the Needles.

A definite indicator of climbers trying to take care of themselves.

good story and follow up capt.

Kirk, a speedy recovery to you!

Cragman - I didn't know the history of how the litters were put in the Gorge, thank you (a late thank you!) for orchestrating. I've helped carry someone out on one of them (they're heavy!). Hope I never need one myself but it is nice to know they're down there.

Yikes. Glad to hear you are going to be OK. Accidents like that can happen to the best of us (among whom I don't number myself), so don't worry. Good on you for wearing a brain bucket. I wear one about 90% of the time these days, but it's good to be reminded that it should be on the other 10% as well.

Heal quickly!

Brian

PS--and thanks to all the climbers who help climbers!

After 20+ years of climbing I ended up pulling the ultimate rookie move by falling with the rope behind my leg.I fell about twenty feet, head first, and slammed into the wall

Sadly this is one of the most dangerous issues that is very rarely mentioned in the books or taught in the clinics,

Glad you're ok and hope this note will help folks think about this human nunchuck problem

Stopped to see Kirk yesterday.

He is doing amazingly well for the ordeal. Lots of staples

Its hard for me to figure out if climbers are really tough or just plain dumb.

After the accident he insisted on stumbling out of the Gorge on his own, even though he knew he was bleeding internally a lot.

He finally accepted help when the climbers who approached him were in the medical field and told him "your gonna die"

He is very lucky and grateful for the help he received at the Gorge.

Party on Kirk

Side note: I went over intending to blaze him out.. to which he replied............. " are you crazy - I have 2 holes in my lung!"

Ditto on the congrats, heal up. Not a rookie move, I see old trad guys who've been climbing for years do this more than the kids. I'm as guilty as the next person too.

Good on you Dean for being proactive. I was at our local crag Saturday, and noted that the litter was gone. Anyone know where I can get a replacement or where one can be had for a reasonable price?

Thanks
