In the last months of Paul Humphrey 's life, AKA "Disaster Master," the cancer pain in his body kept him from climbing. He was sad to think he'd never climb again. Of course he was always climbing in his mind. Last month, as we remembered good times, Paul had an idea, "What if we sprinkled some of my remains into chalk? I could continue to climb all around the world! Paul's chalk balls? No, I've got it PAUL'S BALLS!"
And so became Paul's last wish. We will honor him and make Paul's Balls by adding a pinch of his ashes to a Metolius chalk sock. One of Paul's climbing friends was so excited. "Yea, if I climbed with "Paul's Balls" I'd never fall." Join the celebration of Paul's life by climbing with him.
We request that you take a picture of where Paul has been climbing with you and post it. In each "Paul's Balls" there is a litlle bit of Paul. Remember, a little bit of Paul goes a long way.
(Rev. 11/2014) The Paul's Balls are all dispersed, so we can't send out anymore of Paul's remains... but he is always in our hearts, in the adventures we set out on. May his legacy continue as we set out on new adventures. "Climb on!" And God bless. It truly touches my heart to visit this thread and see that people are still remembering him and taking him with them wherever they climb. I think on this issue as so many, Paul was way ahead of most of us, with much more courage to face the inevitable than we are. I do have some experience of honoring a climber's remains however, since just last year my husband's ashes were placed high on a ledge above Yosemite where tourists will never go and overlooking his favorite climb. They will be reabsorbed into the roots of a tree there and nourish life in a place that he loved.
Given my experience, I'm thinking it might be easier for Paul's friends and still in the spirit of things, to have be a pinch of Paul's ashes mailed to different climbers, including maybe some tree climbers on the coast, and the ashes sprinkled, or buried on a belay ledge on different climbs around the country. His vision was vast and it's fitting that we pay tribute to it out of doors in places far away, including places that he never climbed.
I live in Japan but am making an unexpected trip to Wyoming this summer and I'm sure I can place some of the ashes on one or several of the wonderful climbing areas there. Since I'm a really old trad climber, I don't anticipate using chalk and I'll also admit I'm squeamish about the idea of ashes mixed with chalk. I'll be happy to volunteer however, to take some of Paul's ashes some place interesting in that state where he's probably never climbed before.
After I'm done, I'll post up photos. If everyone does the same, we can think of it as the tribe sharing Pauls's final climb.

I think it's one of the best ideas I have heard in a long time.
I know some may be put off by it, but carrying out someone's final request would be an honor. Especially someone as inspirational as Paul. I never met him, but his stories here are some of the best the Taco has to offer. If he wants to ride in my chalk bag, I have no problem with it. And being as I hardly ever use chalk, he would see plenty of rock and good times.

Without meaning any disrespect to those with other ideas, I think it wrong to change a person's last wish. If you feel squeamish about Paul's Balls, don't participate.
Paul's idea is a beautiful one...he only wants to be with others of like mind.

Tami hit the nail on the head.
...PAUL'S BALLS was the man's idea so it's also difficult to find anything but big fun in the idea and that Paul will be on many-a-crimp, deep in hand cracks, smeared on the sides of chimneys on crags, alpine, gyms........sheesh. Paul Is Everywhere!!! It's as hilarious as it is godly.....
That is exactly what Paul wanted. He wanted us to have a little fun and not take his death too seriously and to be part of people's climbs everywhere. It is truly hilarious and somehow godly at the same time. I think it is an amazing idea and I am happy to be a part of carrying out his wishes.

I can't wait to see pictures of all the places Paul goes in "Paul's Balls" I think its such an awesome idea that he is actively thrust into the sides of cliffs and mountains, still actively a part of the climbing experience that he loved so much. Ever since he was a kid he was climbing, everything and anything he came across. Climbing was a part of his spirit.

No I am not Paul's significant other, she doesn't have an account on SuperTopo to post things so I set this up for her. The money will be going to her and she will be sending out the "Paul's Balls" :) I am Paul's sister, just priviledged to be a part of his life and a part of this fulfillment of his final wishes.
Ruth does read the comments on ST even if she doesn't post. So you can give her a shout out here if you like.

BTW If "Paul's Balls" offends anyone, the offense in just in your mind. You shouldn't be surprised by my son's sense of humor. I have been called "The irreverent Reverend" and proud of it! "Hypocracy comes from anchient Greek Theater in which the actors spoke from behind masks to represent their characters. The first actors were called "Hypocrites" The Humphrey men do not speak from behind any masks. What you see is whar you get and what you get is unconditional love and acceptance even when we disagree.

People shouldn't be offended by the name. If they are, then they need to remove the stick from their nether regions, IMHO.

In memory of Paul Humphrey
Paul was an amazing man. An awesome climber, and a patient teacher. Paul would rush to set up ropes so everyone could climb. This is a cover shot from Vertical Times 2004. The access fund works closely with climbers to preserve climbing for everyone. Paul promoted an Adopt-a-Crag event to help this cause. Always helping fellow climbers, that was Paul.
His last wish was to climb on and on and on.
The idea for Paul's Balls was indeed Paul's.
"Why not keep climbing with my friends" he said, "Why not?"
Put a bit of my ashes in some chalk and off I go...climbing new routes, jamming into cracks, holding onto the rock.
I encourage you to bring your own stories of Paul to this thread.
Remember Paul, post pictures, smile and tell campfire stories online!
I miss Paul so much, my best friend, my love, my climbing partner, my life!
Please contact me if you would like a Metolius chalk sock with a
bit of Paul's ashes. Climb on Paul.

I'm not sure when they will start to ship out but I am sure it will be soon. I think Ruth just recently received Paul's ashes and I am sure she needs a moment before she starts the process of putting the ashes into the chalk balls. She is happy to do it, but I think it would be hard for me to just dive right into it when just receiving his ashes, I can only imagine. God bless her heart. Maybe she will hop on here and leave us all a note once the shipping has commenced.

I met Paul briefly this last Spring at a slideshow. He had brought the rubber chicken to the event. He was lively, fun, and seemed to appreciate my juvenile stunt... I think we shared a certain sense of humor that evening.
I'm ordering a ball, though perhaps two balls would be more appropriate...
I'll be taking Paul on some FA's so he will get to be the first to touch new rock.

Just grabbed the chalkball and am heading out in @20 min. Looking at a potential pretty sizable new route. As there are a lot of badasses around here, I am suspicious of the rock quality, or if might have already been done and is unreported: but even if this turns into a hike during the heatwave we are having, we will have an adventure.

Ruth, Got my Box today. Will post pictures as soon as I can get into the hills where Paul first began boldering around Glen Avon CA when he was @ 9 yrs old. (North East of Riverside.) Paul will also be traveling to AZ and New Mexico with us sometime this fall.

LOL! It turned into a 125' route after all! Woot! At the base, when pulling out my chalk bag I said "this is a Pauls ball" to my non-internet savvy buddy, he frowned and cocked his head in question. I told him the story and said, yes, some of Paul Humpreys ashes are in here and I'm helping to fulfill a wish and a testament of a fellow climbers life......
There was a look of 12 seconds of dumbfoundedness, then happy laughter. The real crux was trying to find my chalk bag before leaving home. I rarely use it, never on routes like this where the dust is so thick that you don't need to add more:-) I looked and looked. At the last moment it appeared. It was interesting that in the time of getting all our crap together (do I bring jugs? do I bring a Grigri? do I bring Tomahwks? do I bring aiders? do I bring pins? do I bring do I bring..once the chalk bag was attached and I was ready to fire, it bought a whole nother dimension to the thing, in a good way, and connected me with Paul and his story...in fact, maybe to all of our humanity, and the shortness of life for us all.

Oh it's started for sure Anna, Paul was on a first ascent with me Saturday. Both in chalk and in spirit. My chalk bag showed up at the last moment out of nowhere, as if it wanted me to keep thinking of it:-) I opened the chalkbag package and put it in my trad chalkbag (this has a headlamp and knife in the zippered pocket Metolius puts on the bottom of it).
Catching our breaths after an ugly approach, my partner quickly called dibs on the first pitch. It surprised me as it was my idea and project, and had invited him, and not the reverse. I squinted hard at him and the route, it was mine to choose to lead or not, I could see th fire in his belly though, and I am old....er. The 2nd pitch (mine if he did P1) looked cleaner and harder and as P1 looked easy but loose and mossy, and was a traversing pitch (and thus out of rockfall range). So I was fine with it. My buddy, who's done many El Cap routes, several in a day, took almost 6 hours to lead this pitch: without any water, so focused he didn't want to tag any up. We rated it 5.6 once it's clean. Once I brought some water up, he wound up drinking well over a gallon in short order.
As I followed, maybe taking 15 min to fire it, everytime I chalked I thought of Paul. Every time. Very special to me, and I never met Paul except for online on this site.
Partner had installed an anchor and rapped to the remaining water at the base. I had carried the spirit of Paul with me the whole pitch, purposely chalking despite my natural reticence to not use the stuff in this kind of an environment. It felt good and I felt connected. No issues at all, very uplifting for me. So I patted down the area near the anchor before I bailed off and reflected peacefully on the fleeting intransigent nature of life...for us all, but for Paul in particular. It was a peaceful, happy and connected thing. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.
PS, for anyone who cares, my buddy had a couple of Theron's big Tomahawks pounded into Horizontal cracks, I think they might have held a short fall. There was an extreme amount of loose rocks and crap (this accounted for a 135' 6 hour lead for a 5.6), and several boulders were trundled. The hawks were in looseish blocks as well, and not anything resembling clean granite cracks.

WOW!!! You Guys and Gals are really doing my heart GOOD! I just read these first few posts and my eyes are filled with tears of JOY! I know Paul is laughing and rejoicing that he is still leaving his mark on so many rocks and so many lives. His determination to battle the cancer and then to go on climbing in this way has inspired this 73 years young dad to join a gymn and get out and ride Paul's Bike. And that Poem Ruth selected and included is so perfect, so PAUL! I cary it with me and read it to strangers. I have always been proud of my son, Paul David Humphrey, but never more than now. From the time Paul was 9 years old all I could do was watch him climb and encourage him to do what he loved so much! CLIMB ON PAUL!

Received one of Paul's Balls week before last, but couldn't get out to climb until today.
I did not personally know Paul, but feel a kinship through the ST forum, and am honored to help fulfill his wish to keep climbing with us.
Today I ventured out with friends to Pictured Rocks county park near Monticello, Iowa where Paul joined us at the Wild Iowa wall.

It's about a 30 minute drive through some of that classic Iowa hill and dale that makes you think you driving through a Grant Wood painting.
Pictured Rocks is also known as 'Wild Iowa', and that name comes from the name of our 'Wild Iowa' wall. The routes are short, but severely overhanging.
After a little prayer as I committed a Paul's Ball to my chalk bag I had a go at leading this local favorite, Virgin Lemonade (Ron pictured leading it below). There's some good places to rest and chalk-up and I took advantage of that as I made my way to the top.
I've never climbed a 5.11 before, but with Paul riding shotgun I somehow managed to get close to finishing this. Pictured below is Alan leading, and I had a shot at this climb with him coaching me on where to find the sharp 2-finger pockets.
I'll post-up with more pictures for the family and dear friends whenever I can.

Storms were covering the canyons of red rock so we headed up to a developing boulder spot by Jean, NV. The three of us teared up at the prose that came along with Paul's Ball. We spent 2 days there. On the final night the guy that started developing the area dropped by for his bday r&r. We all took Paul up some new lines and some established ones. Paul got to ride back to Vegas in the tow truck with us as I poked a huge hole in my fuel tank on the way out. Ooops.
Once the sandstone was dry and the work week was through, Paul went out to Red Rock. We did some cragging in the shade and then thought it'd be nice to take Paul's ball up Lotta Balls. It is worth mentioning that one partner had a consierably large rip in his pants and was sharing his balls that day as well. Overall it was a ballin day.

It's great to see how this took off! What I find interesting is the cerebral and good feeling connection I have to someone I've never met and is no longer of corporeal body. Last Tuesday after work I got invited out by my buddies and did 16 hard laps at the local top rope spot. Chalking and smiling the entire time! It's even more uplifting than just climbing (sans chalk). Maybe its like the climbing is the cake, but this is some extra icing or filling which completes it that wasn't there before....that kind of thing.
And it just keeps going on and on too.
ps, sorry about all the extra chalk:-) Normally I don't use any, or rarely dip.....guess I'm making up for it now. Soon the rains will come and it too will be gone:-(

We intended to do the easy 'Lost Face' route (5.6)
but I think he steered us into more challenging
territory as the TR I setup was better suited
for 'Lost Face Overhang I and II' (5.8).

Paul visited his “roots” of learning to rock climb -- Moonstone Beach up in Trinidad, CA. Chalked up parts of Karen Rock near the top rope anchors and some bouldering areas. I scooted my butt up to the top of Karen Rock and wanted him to see the awesome view and enjoy the beautiful day.
Paul, I know you are flying high towards the sun without worries and you won't fall.

Took a sentimental journey back to some of Paul's earliest climbing spots while he was growing up. Found this old picture of one of his earliests conquests at @ 1 year old.
This is where Paul grew up from age 9 to 18. He spent a lot of time exploring these hills that were next to the Glen Avon Community church where I was the Pastor. I took some of Paul's Balls and left him clinging to some of the rocks he climbed way back then.
From Glen Avon we drove up into the nearby mountains to the Big Bear Lake Area where Paul continued to hone his boldering skills on areas like these. He quickly left me watching him scamper way beyound my ability to keep up. so I anointed some of the lower areas with his Paul's Balls chalk.
Please keep your photos coming. I will be taking Paul with us on our future RV trips so he will be clinging to a lot of interesting places, but all of you "real" climbers will take him further and higher than I can. I look forward to your posts.

A couple months ago, Cosmic and I were climbing with some out of towners. Not only were they touched by Paul's story, they each asked for a pinch from my chalk to go in their bag.

I am sad to report that Paul's wife, Ruth aka Gym Birdwall, has passed away ironically from the same type of cancer. She died on December 21, 2012. The cancer attacked her brain and they gave her less than 2 months to live when she found out. She was gone in less than a month after I was informed she had cancer. She was the one who distributed "Paul's Balls" and I don't know if my Dad will be taking up that task for any future requests.
I am thankful for Ruth and all she did for Paul and for her willingness to start up "Paul's Balls" in his memory. I am glad that many took the opportunity to spread a little Paul around all over the world and take him on their adventures.

July 29, 2011 Paul passed away after a painful battle with metastatic melanoma cancer. I wish I was a climber and could reach out to you all somehow. Thank you for those of you who participated in the "Paul's Balls" thing... that was and is still so very cool! I would like to one day have my Dad bring the rest of Paul's ashes to Joshua Tree and have a memorial service and invite the climbing community out to spread the rest of him in his favorite place to climb and explore. I have no idea when that would happen, but its been on my mind.
All I can do right now is run, for him and Ruth. In their memory I raised over $1450 for melanoma cancer research by running a marathon March 2014, at the LA Marathon. Now I created a "Virtual Birthday Run" to continue to raise money for melanoma research. It's my new mission in life, to bring awareness to this type of cancer and encourage people to get their skin checked every year and to keep doing self exams on your skin every few months.

Vegas Climber, that is so very very very cool! I love it! Brings tears to my eyes to know that people cared enough about him to carry him so far with them in the climbing adventures. I am sure he is happy in all the places he has been so far!
I wonder when I could get a group to gather in his memory in Joshua tree to spread him around there and maybe let people take some with them in their chalk balls to continue the "Paul's Balls" adventures! That would be cool! I think its time to give the rest of Paul over to the elements, release him into the air, and grind him into rocks all over the USA/world.

as an aside... if you wish to spread his ashes in JTree I suggest you not talk about it. At least knot too much as spreading ashes in a national park isn't something the powers that be generally approve of.

Nature, good point. I guess we could gather there to pass out the final Paul's Balls :) He can be "spread" via chalk.
I think JT would be a good meeting point to say our final good byes to him, and to carry him forward into the next adventure. Or some people need to come help me make some Paul's balls to send to people, I just don't know if I have it in me. I don't know how Ruth was able to do that. I think it made her happy though.

I called my Dad. He finished spreading Paul's ashes. He was taking Paul to all his favorite climbing places, the mountain behind our childhood home in Glen Avon CA, Big Bear mountain where there were boulders he liked to climb, and he sprinkled a little around some boulders in Joshua Tree. So, I guess i don't have to think of a way to get a group together and I also don't have a way to get out any more Paul's Balls. Glad Dad was able to do that, just didn't realize he had finished his journeys around with Paul's ashes.

Coming back doing rehab from surgery, was digging around my basement to grab some gear to go self-belay a easy TR to see if I was ready to grab some rock again. Saw the Paul Humphrey chalkbag on the wall and it just seemed so right so I grabbed it. Dr. said I'd be out till November, but Paul and I played hookey from work today - we did a lap and were happy not to screw anything the Dr fixed up on a 5.7....of course, it might be a different story in the AM:-)
Thanks for coming out today with me Paul. It mattered. I know it's a place you've never been as I rarely go there. Last time I was there was when my boy was coming through town and stopped to say hi, good memories both times. Thanks again.

Good to see this thread get bumped. My Paul's Ball is just about empty, and I would gladly take him another round if I could. But I'm glad to hear that he is now resting in his favorite places.
We had some good times together though with Germany, Kilimanjaro and recently Yosemite all becoming part of our travels. I hope he enjoyed the trip, as I enjoyed having him along.
One of the things that always got me about the whole thing, was how many people that I climbed with asked for a pinch for their chalkbags from mine when they heard the tale. A truly unique journey for a unique guy.

Jay, If Paul's Balls have all been dispersed I still have a good portion of Paul's Ball remaining (they were giant balls!) and will bring it to Moab and share it with you. Paul would love to get the places only you could take him.
If fact, although I'm not climbing today I am hiking at Land of Medicine Buddha and I think I'll take Paul up there.

That cracked me up... "They were giant balls!" hahaha. Paul would have LOVED that comment. Man. That's awesome.
Thank you for continuing to take Paul on your journeys. I know the "Paul's Balls" won't last forever, but he will always be in our hearts as we seek out new adventures. Never forget to bring him along on your journeys. As he would say, "Climb on!" He loved to support others in their adventures, as much as he enjoyed going on them!

Paul climbed Chocolate Corner and Elephant Man that day.

FOR SURE! When I get back out to Moab I'm going to get me a kick arse jeep wrangler. We'll be able to take him out the Shaffer trail and all over the White Rim. And all the other places we love out there.
Go Paul.....and every one else with cancer or debilitating illnesses. Live it large for as long as you got. That is the lesson Paul and Ruth taught me.

No pics, but Paul was out with us last Sunday as we set out for adventure in Pictured Rocks County Park somewhere in the hinterlands of Iowa.
The gates to the park are closed to automobile traffic and we set-out in search of old and forgotten trad lines. Hiking down the road we spied a rock face with a pretty crack and decided to have a look. It was worth the ten minutes of scrambling and we decided to set a top rope.
After some gentle gardening and choss testing the route was ready for a climb. Of course Paul's 'ball' was there for inspiration and made a new mark on this old line.
We know someone must have climbed it before, but it was high adventure for us gumbies. My friend took the next TR and placed some gear. I took another turn and aided each placement and added some more giving each a good bounce. All solid. I cleaned it and lowered off to give my friend a shot at the lead.
He sent it proud.
We moved on to another line and enjoyed a spectacular day with the park to ourselves.

The Paul's Ball I received is now with a good friend in North Carolina. I explained the significance of it, and he was delighted to carry on the tradition around Looking Glass and other great places.

The "Paul's Ball's" chalk is remarkably good. I usually don't use chalk, but was out yesterday for some early season slimy wet toproping/monster banana slug tossing/dirt scraping off hold climbing at the local cliff. We clearly were the first on the route this season. Took my bag that had Paul's ashes/chalk and remembered Paul. Real sore today, in a good way.
The chalk made a difference, both in a metaphysical way and a drying off the hands way.

I was running the trails today, it's Paul's Birthday. This image came to mind as someone pointed out a guy standing on a boulder in the distance. Happy Birthday Paul!

Like so many we have lost, Paul is never forgotten, nor his beautiful partner Ruth.

Haha, was cleaning up my gear and noticed a pack in the back a couple of days back. Opened it and I'd stuffed a rope in there but didn't know the age of the thing. I always put my rope into rope backs that have the brand, date of purchase and any other signifigant info (falls etc) but this had no tag. Was perusing this thread and see that very rope clipped to an anchor in 2011. Guess that rope is retired for sure. LOL

Another classic Taco sub thread of a climber Paul, 'Disaster Master' who covered his own fight with melanoma so many years ago....
Ultimately he lost his battle (f*#k cancer) and climbers mixed some of his ashes with chalk to spread around the world...
