We lost a really terrific young man yesterday. Zachary Parke who posts here sometimes as squatch was killed by a car while on his bike in Santa Cruz. If you did not know him, look back through his posts and you will see a really talented climber with a great passion for getting out there and climbing hard routes. He was one of those young guys who loved climbing the old-school valley lines. He was the real deal as a climber. Whenever I talked to Zach it made me remember that time in my life when all I wanted to do was climb.

He was also one of the nicest people I've ever known. It is hard to really believe he is gone. As is the case with all special folks like Zach, he left some really good friends behind. My deepest condolences to them.

Farewell Zach

This shot showed up on ST when someone found the camera Zach and Sebastian had lost. They posted up a photo looking for the owner.

Very sad news.

There but for luck go the many of us who've had close calls with vehicles while riding bicycles.

I often wondered what "squatch" stood for, maybe some short form of sasquatch? He was a lively climber, and contributor here. Another thread he clearly was into is at http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1296541/Half-Dome-Reggae-Route-Appreciation-Thread

RIP Zach. You are the man. "Squatch" was from his nickname "Zachsquatch"(I might be the only one that called him that, not sure..). We were climbing with our other friend Zach Miller at Donner Summit and he saw the other Zach standing in the bushes off at a distance looking like a strange beast so Zach Parke said "Sasquatch!" and we all heard it as "Zachsquatch". Miller moved away so I started calling Parke that name. He was always the coolest nicest guy on the trip. Always positive, psyched to climb anything at any time. One of a kind. You will be missed Zachsquatch.

I talked to a couple of his friends yesterday who felt as you did. Zach was so young and the way he died he was so wrong for a life with so much promise, that anger, bitterness and sadness are very natural reactions.
For his friends, what remains is to come together to grieve for him, and celebrate his life. Damm it hurts right now.

There's a phenomenon in Santa Cruz that's sort of the reverse of a Youth
Climbing league.
Young hot climbers are sweetly encouraging to and supportive of comparative
geezers who are either still on their way up (yes, late starters) or on
their way up again (at a lower level) or trying to deteriorate as slowly
as they can...
Zach was a big part of that. So stoked to see people doing well and having
fun, totally regardless of numbers or resumes.

It's a really hard time right now. It's almost impossible to comprehend what's happened. I bugged Zach all fall and early winter to make me a custom crash pad--his pads were legendary around Santa Cruz. He made me the best pad ever--fit perfectly to the back of my matrix to double as a bed. Turns out that's the last pad he ever made. There's so many ways to remember him, and I've been hearing some incredible stories--Elliot shared some especially emotional and hilarious accounts of Zach's shenanigans last night. I feel honored to have a personal memento to remember him by. Every time I go on a road trip or go bouldering, I'll be thinking of his fine spirit.

I'll second that. He seemed like a really fun, cool guy to be around.

I didn't know him either, unfortunately, but it's kinda weird how his passing touched me. I've been thinking about this all day at work. I was unproductive and a bit confused all day. This happened, but it's something that seemed so senseless. It's different than losing a member of the tribe whilst climbing.

This really sucks and hurts me. Rest in peace, Zach. You had style!

I was priveleged to hang out with his dearest friends last night.
It's a tremendous group, full of love and support.
As everyone is flipping back and forth between desparate pain and joyous
recall of their adventures with the awesome goofball that was Zach,
they're surrounded by loving friends to hold them up and to remind them of
the joy of life.

That said, it feels like a big chunk of my heart (and obviously it's even
worse for a lot of folks here) has just been brutally ripped out.

Have to jump in here, even without much to add.

Barely knew Zach, just a friendly word or glance in the gym. That's the way it's supposed to be: oldsters are in the way unless spoken to. Can't cramp the zest of fired-up kids unless asked. But we get to respect their sending and admire their hijinks from the shadows, closer than they think.

Still, the outer circle here damn well noticed him, and we're grieving too. All over town. Just talked to a woman who crushed on his cute smile.

We get to carry on in his memory; turn it up, burn it, be intense in Zach's honor. There are climbers dead 40 years whose light still enlivens me.

I had the pleasure of hosting Zach and some of his dear friends at my place in Yosemite. He created all kinds of climbing gear including chalk bags, crash pads, and nut tools with amazing skill. While he will be sorely missed, some of my fondest memories of Yosemite contain Zach. My deepest sympathies go out to Elliot and Mark and everyone else touched by this tragedy. Zach was much too young, but I'm pretty sure it's safe to say he has taught all of us a lot in his short time.

Though he's probably best known for his climbing exploits in Yosemite on this forum, Zack was also an incredibly strong boulderer with a love for high ball problems in Buttermilk Country. I had the fortune of climbing there with Zack and a few friends this past May and watched him do a number of hard problems, including Transporter Room. As impressive as his ascents are, what made him truly great to climb with was how supportive he was of everyone's climbing and how entertaining he was to be around. It was on this trip that I came to understand why he loved the climbing there. I will always remember him sitting on top of those giant boulders just taking it all in.

his Mum was there

As the Mum of a 20 year old my heart is literally shredded when I think of her. His friends will likely be a great source of strength for her. So many lives shattered by this tragedy. My favorite saying in grief: "be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the splendor in the grass, glory in the flower, we must grieve not but rather find strength from what remains behind"

I didn't know Zach personally but the day he died I added an extra mile to my (almost) daily run. Recovering from my own serious illness I felt I wanted to honor his beautiful youthfulness and vitality and push myself even harder during my recovery. Thank you Zach ...I didn't think I could do it and I cried as I thought of you and your family but I did it and now it's a permanent part of my run.

Good idea Silver, I don't know her, but some of my friends do. I have a bunch more that I need to rescue from a failing hard drive, once thats done I'll pass them on.

Many people from Santa Cruz went to climb in Yosemite this weekend for Zach. It was pretty cool to see the guys who only boulder, going up Royal Arches. Elliot and Kevin went up the Regular NW face on Half dome and met another group who had just come up Snake Dike. I found climbing in the valley offered the best healing for me.

Take care.

My son Tory is in that ride ... somewhere. I got distracted and missed it.

Tory came over the next morning, Father's Day, to make me breakfast. "Zach said the Royal Arches was one of his favorite climbs. Let's go do it!" We haven't climbed in a few years; he's a busy teenager.

Zach is still bringing people together in love, just like he always did.

the ride was a very special way to celebrate the life of a sweet young man, it was heartening to see easily over 300 people gather together sharing memories, tears, adult beverages, and the experience of the ride...and surprisingly maybe only a couple of dozen climbers among that group, as Steve pointed out, many were climbing in the valley with Zach in their hearts...he touched so many people...

-Photos and mementos to share on presentation boards and in our memory books for everyone to see
-If you have ceramics, bags or art made by Zach we would love to share them for all to see, mark them with your name and they can be returned after the celebration
-Video cameras
-love, laughter and lots of crazy stories

There will be vegetarian snacks and pizza (duh!)
Consider carpooling or ride your bike, and please be respectful of the park neighbors

We would return to the parking lot to find Zach propped up in his sleeping bag, drinking a beer after a day of fun with the Mini Traxion. We were quite the spectacle for the other legitimate users of the parking lot.

These pictures capture the quintessential day out with Zach for me. The day starts with tea and goofing in Camp 4. We go out to the Cookie, and I back off from Beverly's Tower - Zach leads it gets me up there, and then gets me up Wheat Thin. In between mini traxion fun over everything else, Meat Grinder, Outer Limits. Elliot goofs around aid climbing and working something heinous, Mark dives into Hardd as his warm up. The picture quality is crap, I'm just happy I have at least this now.

Sully: What I do takes 30 seconds out of my day, Peter in cleaning up those pictures spent more time than I have in the last month posting Zach pictures.

People in Santa Cruz are still talking, getting together and climbing, riding or sharing a beer to remember Zach. It just seems to be something that you can't get out of your head.

Have a good weekend everyone, and take a minute to think of your friends.

That photo of Zach and I in fromt of drug dome was taken on Zach's 25th birthday in the Meadows. It was opening weekend, or close to it, and the first thing we climbed was On the Lamb to OZ to Hobbit Hobbit Book. What a great day. OZ was his favorite climb. We always planned on doing an "OZ Fest" where we got as many parties as possible to climb it in a day...
I'm gonna go visit his memorial today... I'm sure I'll see people there. I miss climbing with the only lunatic that's more psyched than I am.

Keep up the love, Steve! ( I'm a Steve too...)

At some point though, you have to let go. I really dig this thread and I know you guys were close.

Keep his memory alive on this forum, but don't burden yourself with guilt that you have to post pics of him all the time. I love it! And I can see you loved your friend. But keep in mind that Zach would probably want you to go back to climbing, enjoying life, and celebrating what he loved.

I mean this respectfully. I know you hurt. But what would Zach want you to do?

You're a good guy for remembering and celebrating your bud. I wish I knew him, seems like my kind of guy.

Keep remembering him, but don't feel like he'd be disappointed when you stopped. From what I hear, he wouldn't. He want you to climb.

I lost a close friend a couple of years too on a bad lead fall. It sucks. But I keep doing what she loved doing and I know she'd dig that.

Rest easy, Steve. But grieve for your lost friend. You obviously cared for him a lot. Live your life like Zach would want you to. That is what you should do.

edit: I know what I posted sounds inpolite, but you have to heal too, bro.

Keep posting the pics. I love them. Just know that Zach's memory doesn't fade when you stop posting them.

You're a good friend.

For those of you who knew, met, or were touched by Zach. Wombat Grips, which the late Zachary shaped some of the most amazing climbing grip ever for, is offering a 2nd round of hoodies sporting the Parke Designs Logo that benefit NOLS scholarships.

This is from the Wombat Grips website:

"In honor of the late great Zack Parke, Wombat Grips is offering another round of Parke Hoodies. While Zack is off on his next big adventure keep his spirit close to your heart. We are donating ten percent of the proceeds to the Zachary Parke Memorial Fund in the hopes of establishing a NOLS scholarship in his name."

https://www.wombatgrips.com/site/?wpsc-product=wombat-parke-hoodie

It's cool to sport the (P) logo these days, even if you didn't know Zack. All the holds that Zack sculpted are amazing and worth having on your wall too.

I didn't know Zach, but I am happy to see that he had so many good friends who continue to remember and honor him. That tells me a lot about him!

^^^^^^so true. As the Mom of a son close in age I often think of her and the deep emptiness she must feel. Whenever I see a bike messenger cruising around Santa Cruz I always think of Zach. What a hole in all our hearts.

Just thinking of Zach today, his Mom and family. It's been a lovely few days around Santa Cruz and I think of how this young man should be bikin' around and planning his next climbing adventures with his buds. It hurts ... really hurts.

I just found this post after reading the ho chi minh trail TR.

Zach sounds like a great climbing partner/human being.

RIP.

I've been biking a lot this past month with all the beautiful weather. A few of my routes take me up by UCSC where Zach lost his young and beautiful life.
It breaks my heart that this beautiful young man is not getting to bask in the beauty of Santa Cruz and Yosemite.
Warm thoughts for his family and friends...

Was speaking of Zach just last week with a UCSC climbing buddy who knew him. I had only met him in passing at PacEdge.

Sorry Santa Cruz people.

As soon as I saw the thread I did shudder. So very, very sad.

Thank you for bumping...I bike a lot and so often think of Zach. And of course when I'm on Empire Grade I usually tear up.

I've been thinking of Zach this week...

A really lovely female cyclist from Chico was killed by a distracted driver last week, not sure if the driver was on their cell phone.

Rita wrote this song about our so-loved cycling brother Jim Rogers who was killed by a distracted diver on her cell phone - while riding his bike.
