I recently returned from Joshua Tree where I had been living most of my life, having retrieved the rest of my belongings from nearly 4 years living back in Oregon. I found literally thousands of old pics...The first is from when I was guiding Keith Brueckner in Verdon in 1984 at age 23. I'm leading a 5.12c "Sans Chassure" (barefoot.) Will post more as I scan them... :)

Watched this trippy documentary the other day and it actually mentioned my client Keith Brueckner...
"The extraordinary yet true account of a secret US government-backed attempt to build a spaceship the size of an ocean liner and send it to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, propelled by thousands of miniature nuclear bombs.

Beginning in 1958 Project Orion ran until 1965, employing some of the best scientists in the world, including the brilliant British mathematician and physicist Freeman Dyson. "Freeman Dyson is one of the few authentic geniuses I've ever met", says Arthur C. Clarke. "Orion isn't crazy. It would work. The question isn't whether we could do it, but whether we should do it".

The film uncovers a contemporary angle to Project Orion. Arthur C. Clarke states that today's generation are once again serious about going to Mars and that NASA has once more become interested in similar nuclear technology as used by Project Orion in the early 60s.

The film has exclusive interviews with Ted Taylor, who ran The Project Orion and who is also the most legendary nuclear weapon designer of all time; and Freeman Dyson who is one of the greatest theoretical physicists and mathematicians that has lived this century.

Clarke talks about how he originally wrote the screenplay for Space Odyssey 2001 and he describes how he referenced The Project Orion and its use of nuclear explosives within the plot of the screenplay. However by the time it came to filming, the nuclear references were dropped as Stanley Kubrick had become very anti-nuclear bombs and his special effects team were unable to come up with an idea as to how to visualize the actual impact of the technology."
This is a screenshot from the documentary showing a declassified report by Brueckner...I knew he was a Theoretical Physicist and well known professor at UCSD, also that he had written the previous Woodson guidebook before my own, but not this kind of way out stuff...

Before I left for France I had been climbing a bunch with my ol' pal "The Guargoyle" in the LA area, as I had a girlfriend there also...He took me to a place in Malibu Creek that we were to call "Little Europe" because of all the pockets... :)Man I always wore those dang Hugh Herr pants that Largo gave me...
I was there also when he bagged the second ascent of "Yabo's Arete" at Stoney. Below I'm doing the third, just after him...

That stuff brings back a lot of memories, Michael. I remember when you were living in HVCG, Bachar always sought you out for bouldering whenever he pulled in, because nobody else could keep up with him.

It was also a treat watching you and John Long (in his prime) climbing all these test piece problems at Giant Rock airport (remember that bus full of weird people that pulled in?). Of course it turned into a do or die, last man standing competition between you two and...

Largo came in second.

DUDE there was a time when you were as bad as bad gets. Keep posting!

The shot of Bachar Cracker upthread reminds me of the
time I went there with Mike...needless to say he sent the thing,
had it wired and I told him I didn't think I'd ever do it.

Basically he'd have none of that, and convinved me I could.
No way, I thought, just getting to the lip was like going to
the moon, not in the cards 4 me...

Still, Mike demonstrated the climb again and admonished
me in a friendly but direct way to basically pull my head out;
He knew I could do it...

A few weeks later, somehow, he was right. Finally after years
of thinking no way, he'd convinced me I could. And I did. Got
it fairly wired too, even doing it in hiking boots w/out warm up,
over the lip and to the top of the boulder...success!

It was a point well taken, had learned a lesson.

It should also be noted Mike is terrific musician, and a really
good artist, not to mention just one of the nicest and most
positive people I've ever known.

Now we are looking at rock climbers....
No games, no media horse sh×t, no equipment tricks,
No "special hooks" or "secret drill divets" or "' trenched heads"
Or poop bags at the base or empty food cans littering a
national park ; ROCK CLIMBERS:

It's simple: you, the rock, and the least amount of gear
And impact equals the ,most authentic and real experience.

Call it light, or "lacking commitment" or not "real climbing"

Ron,

Those 3 shots are it.

Shawn took the 2 images on top with my camera, and then I shot an image of Shawn climbing.

Somewhere on another Woodson thread here on SuperTopia there is another excellent image of Shawn taken by someone else and much more close up. He is pretty much wearing the same climbing attire.

Miss those Woodson days of just showing up and whoever was on the mountain (very few of us) would just end-up climbing together or not. Very low-key, no stress, but even then pulling down hard.

The days before every one and their mother became a "climber" via Hollywood or Madison Avenue.

I have a very vivid memory of MP doing just that. My friend and I were doing "The Crucible" at the top of Woodson, and Watusi shows up, asks if he could get a B on "Test Tube." We move the rope over there, he tie-ins with a bowline on a coil around his waist and just walks it. Bumped into MP later that night down in SD at the Larry Norman concert and we just smile and head nod, recognizing one another.

Good times in the 70s. Life seemed simple. Innocent in many ways.

Yeah Mike and Shawn showed me the place back in the seventies. Was crowded if there were two or three cars parked there. Touring the place with those two was an adventure to say the least...I just followed, had no clue where we were on the mountain or what problems we were doing.....just climbed whatever they said to do. Last time up there, there were like 50 cars lined up and I knew NO ONE! I sure miss Curtis. Me, Mike and Shawn had some fun together.

You got that right, Michael. I covered the 86 contest for Rock & Ice Magazine, and 2 days before the contest, event organizers Rick Piggot and Carmel Schimmel were taking Ron Kauk on a tour of high value problems that were used in the contest.

Thats not to say Kauk couldnt have won it anyway. Rick and Carmel were not trying to stack the deck, they were showing off some of Ricks recent routes, but never should have taken Kauk to climbs that were going to be in the competition. Kauk was pretty much unstoppable at the time.

I agree - legend.

MP was the first "non-Imperial Beach" climber I got to see climb; it took me 8 or ten years to begin to come close to what Watusi shredded (in scats) that fateful day at woodson, when we met.

ALways fun to climb with, such good and pure sporting energy - and humor.
And talent. real talent.

I think Watusi got to have a blast blowing peoples doors off - it terribly convincing style (and igniting a landslide of competition) at woodson all those years...too funny!

No one could touch the guy on 5.11 highballs, and we all had to work our asses off trying to equal Mike!

I loved the days when you could drive up to the gate, push it wide open (despite having like 10 or 20 padlocks on it), and drive up the hill. With the numbers of boulderers now, though, it'd be mayhem.

I remember that kind of odd guy in the fire lookout on top of Woodson, too (had a pet rattlesnake up there with him). Major weirdness vibes.

Here's a group of us humping Raleigh Collins' Hang Glider to the top of Ryan Mountain in like 1987?. Raleigh, RIP,(in the lead, I'm behind him with my ever present Bubba-Deck,) was taught how to climb by myself, BVB, Off White, and other SD scumbags in the mid '70's. He launched and was hoping to gain some thermal action and possibly make it to Palm Springs but was affected by downdraft and landed at Ryan Camp...Viewed the whole time by the park superintendent the whole time, (he was even parked at Ryan when he landed...) Raleigh eluded prosecution as the tool thought it was actually quite bold!

did you ever, Mr. Fish!

I thought these had been dutifully sorted back into the sordid depths of the napkin dispenser in Carl's Junior and lost to the world, back in 1983?

In the many years--what, 28 now?-- since I saw this last, I'd forgotten the the sheer chutzpah, the joie de vivre of the original. The word magnificence comes to mind. As does yikes.

I remember hanging with my brother John sometimes and we might end up at like say a Denny's or something. It had been cold and miserable up in the monument and we were just hiding out. John would get to scribbling on a napkin just to get a fun groove and coming up with wicked funny stuff and I'd follow in suit...For kicks John said "Let's bury these deep in the napkin holder and someone might just pull one out, not knowingly, and get a shock maybe..."

Blessed be Pyro I couldn't tell you...In all honesty I'd only gone there from SD a few times with Shawn Curtis in the '70's, and then with the Guargoyle early '80's so I'm not the one to answer that one, even though I do dearly love that place! (I also went there for 2nd unit shots for "Under Seige 2" which got the film crew in a world of sh#t for painting over the graffiti, although water soluble, people were pissed! I had nothing to do with that...) Could very well have been the "Yabaho" (one man tribe)

I wonder if that last shot is at "5.10 on the Outside" problem? I was there the day of the contest('86)& CG got sandbagged good on that one.

Yep, thaDood, that be "5.10a On The Outside", 5.11d at Woodson.

In the Open Division, I had one more slot on my scorecard at that contest and about fifteen minutes left when I ran into G. Epperson on the road. I told him of my dilemma when he suggested, "Why don't you try 5.10a On The Outside, I saw you do that the other day? It gave the Elite guys problems." So, I ran down and found the TR in situ but no judge/belayer. I quickly recruited someone from the crowd and was able to tick the problem for my final entry that day. What a memory that comp was! There has to be more pictures out there from '86 that haven't surfaced, there must be!

When ever i here the name MP i flash back on the first(and only)time i saw the dood...'79 bouldering contest at the Magnolia Boulders. He is wearing this psycho-disco shirt, purple bellbottoms and addida tennies without laces. Fast forward to the final problem in the contest which I remember well. It is a showdown between JB & some dude from UCSD on a steep and thin crimping & friction face/boulder about 20ft high. They both eventually send it. Afterwards, as everyone drifts off in various directions, MP strolls up and on sights it in the blink of an eye...in his untied tennies. I remember thinkin "Who the f*#k is this kid?"
