So this is a list of people that expressed interest in buying a Hurricane Drill that Luke Malatesta is making. There will be more info about purchasing, payment and delivery later. This is just to get a count of how many people that are are planning on purchasing one to get a count on how many to make. I'm only giving Luke a hand keeping track of this list and I'm not part of the build and design. If there are any questions you can go to either one of these threads and read through them and ask Luke.
http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1350513/Hurricane-Drill-Intrest
or
http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1384069/D5-Hurricane-Drill-Build
So if you are interested post it up here and I will keep the list up to date through the process. If I missed your name from the other threads, I'm sorry, please repost that you want one here. If you are already on the list no need to say it again unless you want to add another one or take your name off the list. If there is no number next to your name that means you only want one.
As of now there 65 people asking for 71 Drills. And a few "maybes"

In fact, you might review that old thread on the hammers and anyone who was bitching, you should just take them off the active list right now and put them on standby ..that is, they can only get one if there are no other buyers and you want to sell the extra drills that don't have homes.
But that's your call Zak. Thanks!

Couchmaster- I'm only keeping a list for Luke. I'll let him make any decisions on not selling something he crafted. I know people are going to bitch about everything, I guess including who deserves a drill and who shouldn't. When it comes down to it, I'm sure there will be enough for everyone that is interested. I hope after what happened with the hammereveryone learned that this is not a project that Black Diamond or DMM is doing. This is just another climber/supertopo user. Give tge dude a break. I'm sure Luke learned a lot from what happened from the D5 hammer too and will deal with things accordingly.
locker- please re read my OP where I state "This is just to get a count of how many people that are are planning on purchasing one to get a count on how many to make." this is just to make sure that Luke is not going to make 250 drills when only 100 people want them.
Everyone- please keep your calm about the whole process. There will be snags, and I'm sure some people may get pissed but keep in mind that this is one guy putting this togeather, and keep in mind that it's just a drill. I'm going to talk to Luke about how to make this less painless and will keep people posted.

Maybe a couple of things to consider
1. As Zac points out this is just a list to get a basic idea how many drills should be produced.
2. If you put your name on the list you should be prepared to buy a drill once they become available. there may be that one or two that for whatever reason may not be able to but dont put your name on the list unless you are serious about purchasing one.
3. It is up to the individual to keep track of the project on their own through Supetopo announcements etc. and once drills become available to act and purchase the drill you requested asap. If only a limited number of drills are available at that time then once their gone their gone pure and simple. If Luke decides to do another run in due time and you miss out on the first run then you will just have to wait.
I feel that if the process is keep simple then there should be no problems with orders. just my 2cents worth

Just FYI a lot of this has already been covered in the other threads... Perhaps the pertinent info could be edited into OP? IIRC Luke's ballparking it at ~$120, which includes one collet. Don't take that as gospel though, Luke's been active in these threads and will chime in with an authoritative answer soon enough.
BTW, for those just catching up this is pretty much a done deal and won't be 5 years in the making like the D5 Hammer was. Luke has the prototype in hand and IIRC is close to releasing it to production. I'd be surprised if they weren't in your eager hands by the end of March at the latest.

Put me on the maybe list, please.
And the D5 hammer project was knott 5 years in the making. maybe it was a year which is more than acceptable considering the nature of the project.
but yes... the drill project is shaping up very very quickly. They do seem like they are a lot easier to produce than the hammers.

Sorry Nature, I thought I recalled HealyJE saying it was 5 years from initial concept to delivery. I'd be surprised if that all happened in a year, but if it did color me even more impressed. :-)

No worries, Nature. Looks like it was 5 years at the minimum... Just found a couple posts of his mentioning that tidbit mixed in with the ugliness at the end of the hammer thread. More interesting is a search turned up this thread from 2006: The Deuce5 Open Source Hammer Project - II. No idea if there's a Part I, but I can only assume it preceded it. Kudos to them for sticking with it!
Oh, and sorry for the tangent... The point I was trying to make is I think some of the ugly in the hammer thread was due to how long the project took to come to fruition. Luke's on top of this and those kinds of things shouldn't be an issue.

I might be interested depending on how the whole thing turns out and what it costs. The $120 estimate seems a little high to me though...currently produced drills run about $65, albeit without the same set of features...
I have a drill that has worked well for me already and an extra doesn't do me much good unless there is a compelling reason to switch.
An extra hammer on the other hand, is always useful. =)

Missed a lot of conversation while @ work!
Lets see if I can help clarify a few things:
Caz is keeping track of this thread on his own, which he offered to do so on his own. This is a big help and much appreciated!
There ARE going to be 250 drills made. I spent a lot of time playing around with different shops and quanities, and this seemed to be a good quanity to have made. I am using this thread to judge how many to have assembled and ready to go right off the bat. I spent a lot of time getting this thing going over the past year so that there would not be a lot of down time before everyone could enjoy Middendorfs design. I think that the D5 Hammer project was a big boost in motivation esp. as they started to be produced.
The Drills will be available on Simons site for sale as soon as everything is completed. I do not want to start collecting funds before I am actuially able to ship them out. I am going to get more info off to Simon as soon as I can calculate all of total costs involved.
I have already paid for 50 collets, and already need to get more as we are past the 50 mark. That is what I mean when I said 50 will be ready to go.
I will also have extra wrenches and replacment grips for sale. I will keep updating the build thread as I recieve the parts and start the build.
From what I can tell now, we are still in the $120ish range shipped to your door.
I don't think that we are looking like running out of drills @ this point.
Thanks,
Luke
Edit: Strider, They are expensive compared to other drills currently out there. They were when John made the first ones in the 90's, costing 89.99 each.
Steel and production costs have risen drasticially over the years. That and it is 100% American Made.

Better stories from when I was on tour BITD with bands like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Foo Fighters and Metalica, not all at once, that would be weird...
The big award shows are kinda boring compared to being on the road and living the sex drugs and rock and roll life style. Minus the drugs for me, but LOTS of drinking. My liver still hurts from those days...
You and I have met a couple times, maybe if you're ever back in JTree I can share some of that with you... But some stories just stay on the road...

Hey everyone....Sorry i have not posted anything up in a while...I have been playing the waiting game with all of the suppliers. The wrenches should be ready to ship in a week or so. The Company that is making the grips is "way behind schedule" so I do not have a lead time on those. I have the collets, cable, tube, swages, collet nuts sitting in my shop.
The new drill bodies should be here soon
I got to try out the re-machined drills, I think that they will work just fine. I have been wavering on if I want to have the first batch corrected and pick those up as well. This would drop the price down for everyone but then I would have almost 2 batches of drills to unload after everyone here on Supertopo gets theirs.
I was hoping for everyone to have their drills by now, This whole process has been a learning curve.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up...sorry not a ton of news.
Thanks,
Luke

All Right everyone....the first 90 are done and ready to go!
All said and done they are $129 shipped to your door via USPS.
The drills will be ready to go on Simons website @ noon on Friday and available for purchess. There is an extra option for just the grips or just a set of wrenches for those who wanted those.
There are 90 available ASAP....After this first batch I will need to get some more collets so there may be a couple of weeks until the next batch is ready to be shipped.
Here is a link to Simons Website (same site that the Hammers were on)
