What a curve ball life pitches (yeah, been watching the playoffs)...last several weeks I am romping around Yosemite, picking up trash, hiking, scrambling and climbing around the base of El Cap in 90+ heat feeling great; the next week being told I need imminent surgery. Surgery scheduled for next Thursday. Ferretlegger has been my trusty companion throuugh all this zero to 60 junk ola. I'm not happy missing the remainder of the Fall season in Yosemite; and Ferretlegger's El Cap fall wall plans have been put on hold...ah, spring climbing on the wall gives him a chance to get even more buffed. Glad this all happened after Facelift so I got to connect up with more flesh to flesh folks than cyber folks. Kinda scared but thankful also for what medical science has to offer! Susan

"Doctor," says the man excitedly and dramatically holds up his heavily bandaged hands. "Will I be able to play the piano when these bandages come off?"
"I don't see why not," replies the doctor.
"That's funny," says the man. "I wasn't able to play it before."

I don’t know you, but after reading your post I am compelled to add a few comments which I hope are constructive.
Three years ago I had to make a similar adjustment, from the certain knowledge that I was in great shape and excellent health to the understanding that my life could end shortly or I might, perhaps, recover. The discovery of my problem took a few days, following a convulsive seizure which got my attention. I learned some things in the process, have undergone remarkable medical traetments, and I am doing really well now.
Be pro-active with your Doctors. Walk in to every meeting with a pen and paper and a list of questions. You certainly must have a lot of questions right now, but when you get that 10 minutes with the Doctors it’s easy to forget what you wanted to ask. Write down the answers. Even better, if you have a significant other or trusted friend get them to write them down too, then take a quick look and see if you both heard the same thing. Bring up any discrepancies on the spot for clarity.
I’m not paranoid about Doctors. To the contrary I have been so very fortunate to be under the care of some great ones. I just know from experience, that if you take the process of communicating with them about your care very seriously they will appreciate it and you also will be in a better position to make decisions.
If you are attuned to and engaged in the process they will be able to do a better job for you.
I hope you experience the best of all possible outcomes.

Sorry Johnny - If you were in my shoes you would not be making statements like that. And just because someone is an Olympian does not mean that they have experienced everything. Many Olympic athletes are only in the games today due to the work of top notch surgeons.

Wishing you the best in terms of recovery. Though my recent surgery was planned, I totally underestimated the recovery, which has slid me a couple curve balls.

A short retrospective…
June 30: yeah early retirement, things look good, no more crowding fun time into holidays or weekends; long ocean cruises without need to have regular contact with the “bosses” … even an early retirement incentive.
July 28: sad day, loss of my beloved 11 ½ year old yellow lab. She lived a great life, but shucks we were going to have more time, not the rushed a.m. and p.m. walks. She was brave and strong and did live a wonderful life.
August : 3 weeks in Montana hiking everyday the M trail, Sacajewa Peak, hikes out in Hyalith. Ferretlegger working a project at the U. Not much sailing this summer as Ferretlegger plans a Fall solo El Cap and we spend lots of time in Yosemite practicing set up of new gear, refreshing aid climbing and such. Oh well, not a problem, Hawaii and Alaska beckon in the Spring.
September: Eastern Sierras backpacking; Palisades Glacier. Brand new backpack because geez…now lots of time. Facelift: wow, I can be there the whole time, no need to rush up for the weekend because of work. Lots of time to work out to get ready for an epic ski season…we plan the building of sledges because we are tired of hauling packs for extended back country trips.
October: WTF is this digestive issue that won’t go away? OK the spring colonoscopy diagnosed some diverticula with the recommendation…eat more fiber etc. etc. An attack of diverticulitis? Dr. puts me on Flagyl and Cipro. Oh crap, the side effects are demoralizing and creepy but it’s only for 10 days. We are headed to Moab mid Oct for our annual mtn. bike and Indian Creek trip so I’ll concentrate on getting stuff ready for that trip. Oct. 6th my regular annual girlie checkup. I have been working out like a demon trying to get my abs REALLY strong after having hernia surgery in May. I point out to the Dr. that it seems like something is getting hard but it’s low and only on one side. She concurs that it isn’t muscle tissue and appears to be an “enlargement” in my pelvis. Sent for a special ultra sound confirming a very large ovarian mass. Stunned. October 8th I am at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Medicine (formerly Cancer Clinic) signing up for surgery on October 14th.
October 14th: Surgery at 1:30; Ferretlegger there with me until I can’t remember. Doc leans over me sometime later in recovery confirming an ovarian cancer diagnosis. Likely clear cell. I recall moaning, “it hurts, and oh shit”
Surgery recovery: several days in the hospital, now home resting, and getting some walks around the block (wasn’t it just 2 weeks ago I was running 5 to 6 miles down to Capitola beach and back?) arrrgghhh…Pins and needles waiting for path report: 10/20 Clear Cell Ovarian Cancer; Stage 1C. Mixed news, but on the uptick. Clear Cell is rare and can be aggressive but stage 1c has good prognosis...perhaps even the surgery cleaned it all, but chemo follow up is always recommended. Starts Nov. 19th. Then regular follow up via CT scans.
Life isn’t grand right now, but it’s good. I am so thankful my son is grown and in college. Around the hospital and clinic I saw too many sick young people; some who probably had young children at home and my heart would absolutely break.
I’ve sailed oceans, climbed (to me) mountains; rolled in the snow, spent time at the bottom of the ocean; rode mountain bike trails that seemed like they would never end; had a career that I absolutely loved; and a cherished son that has successfully “launched” and a partner that is tough as any granite wall. Everything that is left for me is frosting on the cake. So time to slow down a little bit and not always try to have my cake and eat it too. Things do seem to happen for a reason…don’t they?
And besides that….I just saw the Giants win the pennant. Things are definitely up!
To my ST friends that have been in contact via Ferretlegger…I’m on the mend and will get to all of you soon…and to my hero Paul (Disaster Master)…thanks for your personal words of encouragement…you have touched so many people not only with your spirit but in a very practical sense of become attuned to your body…and to other women on ST, some of you already know this, but ovarian cancer is called the cancer that “whispers” because one day you think you have indigestion and the next day you are told you have cancer. And there is no screening like a Mammography.
I remember years ago, after a difficult time, a cherished mentor said to me: “Susan, you have always landed on your feet”. I don’t expect anything differently now.
Looking forward...to the next time I am able to rope up.
Ferretlegger and I on Sacagewa Peak, Bozeman, August 2010; this time a different mtn. to climb, but climb it we will.

My mom is now 22 years after diagnosis of stage 3-something ovarian cancer (and three years after diagnosis of end-stage--bye-bye--pancreatic, but that's another story). My dad made sure she had the latest, most promising treatment. Nothing against those who opt for homeopathic therapies or whatever, but scientific medicine is getting so much better with ovarian cancers than they used to be (not so much for pancreatic).
You have done great spotting this early. Your fitness was crucial to that.

A little set back today...my left leg started to swell some, a CT scan showed some early blood clot formation....now I am on daily injections of a blood thinner for the next few months. Geez will the fun ever end?

Doing well...just as the "owees" from the surgery have subsided I started my first chemo. The anti nausea meds really do their thing...now third day out I have the expected muscle aches...which is supposed to last only a few days. I still have my hair but will cut it next week before it goes on its own. Appetite very good. I've been very mobile, lots of walking. Light hand weight workouts. I got back to PA to visit my elderly Dad...that was the hardest...telling him what's up. Spending time on our boat (at dock)...the sea air is very restorative. We may do a run down to Joshua Tree before my next chemo. Although I can't climb just walking around in a different environment will be wonderful. Also planning on being at the Donni event on the 5th. Although I know the chemo effects will be cumulative just getting past that first one was a big relief. Now just 5 more to go! (They are every three weeks).

2nd chemo 12-10-10. Premeds, all the good stuff legally before they make you a toxic waste dump; chemo takes 8 hours, wore my running tights and top and did laps (sorta) around the chemo ward...CANNOT sit for 8 hours. So far so good! Hair is mostly gone but the drive to get well is in high gear! 2 down 4 to go. (Yeah yeah yeah, I know Teal is the Ovarian Cancer color...my teal running top was bought many years ago.)

Susan, the thing I"ve found out about these curve balls it that over time, ya get to be darned good at whackin' 'em outta the park!!
My first surgery three years ago (uterine cancer) was certainly a curve ball; the second one (one year agon on the 13th of this month - ovarian cancer) was just a spit ball...
Each day right now may seem like eternity sometimes, but it's not. The slow, dragging days can merely be opportunities to smile some more, see more beauty, revel in the moments that you have, and find joy and peace and yes, even sorrow. They can also be more time to sleep (always nice!!!)
In all of that, I have found that I've come back different, certainly, but with a more healthy outlook on life in general, and absolutely a more appreciative view of both the good and the bad.
I'm sure that there's a caucophony of thoughts and feelings swirling in your head and your heart... It will sort itself out. For me, there was (and honestly, sometimes still is) depression, anger, resentment, even shame. Oddly, there's also relief. Can't explain it...
I guess everyone has a different opinion of what it is to knock one out of the park. I have no doubt that you'll find your definition over time...
In the meantime, know that you are not alone out there in this. Sending you many thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery, peace and acceptance,

How's your New Year, feeling strong, or wrong? Likely a mixed bag. Me too. On we go, though.
I thought of you while in J-Tree. Wish you and Blackbird and all the rest of the survivor / thrivers in the Cancer sub-set of ST all the greatest that can be.
Climbers Rise Above Cancer. Even when we feel like we fail to red-point, let alone on-site, we WILL try again. That is the difference between a soul who collapses and a soul who soars. I know I feel less than best, but I (and you ) are climbing on.
Keep letting us know what's up when you can.

Happy New Year everyone, thanks for warms thoughts. Third of six chemos was New Year's Eve day...yeah, why hang out at a bar when I could sit in a cozy recliner and just mainline?!!! Doing well, considering I look more like an alien...bald, no eyebrows, no eyelashes! All the "labs" indicate that everything is moving in the right direction. I usually get long walks in every day and to the gym a couple times a week. Michael (Ferretlegger) and I made it up to Kirkwood last week. He got some skiing in, I got to pick up my season pass (purchased prior to getting ill and didn't buy "insurance") and think about how next year will be different.
All the struggles we endure as climbers, hikers, mountaineers, or just hard core outdoors people has been an invaluable preparation for this journey.
I think alot about seeing everyone next year at Facelift when I should have most of my strength back, if not much hair!
Paul, so glad you got down to JT, any relief from the side effects of your clinical trial meds?

Crux is reached, chemo 4 of 6 completed today. I've been feeling pretty good, even though I look like an alien...should have seen me the day I got my eyes dilated...whoa then I REALLY did look bizarre...if only the pupils had been vertical instead of round! That would have freaked out everyone. Picture taken about 4 days ago.
Trying to keep my strength up! I'm not allowed to climb (not because of chemo but I am on blood thinners so I can't risk bumps and knocks) but I do get to the regular gym as much as possible to work out. Keeping my fingers crossed that when I'm done with chemo I will go into a forever remission.

First trip back to Yosemite since surgery and chemo. Full trip report later. This was a hike up to Columbia Rock on Yosemite Falls Trail above Camp 4. I call this Half Dome and Chemo Dome! Ferretlegger is there with me...as he always has been. I'm a lucky girl.

Susan, Are you familiar with the Clearity Foundation?
Thanks for the info. I was not familiar with Clearity. It's targeted group is for women in stage 3C and 4. I am early stage: 1C. Truly one of the lucky ones. Rarely is it caught early, typically 70% of women are not DX until it is very advanced. I think I have used up 8 of my 9 lives by being caught early. I will share the information with some of the support groups I meet with.
Great pic of the Tri-Domes Ha Ha...I won't share that with Michael. And he THOUGHT he was thin on top...
you are.. one of the lucky ones. Boy Nita, you are so right and I am so humbled by it every day. There isn't a day goes by that I don't tear up for those that didn't get the break I got. While my DX and follow up chemo is no picnic it breaks my heart every day reading about those who are still suffering so much.
we'll have a HH taco get together oh yeah....you can count on it

No sprint to the end but getting it done the slow way...got kicked off chemo last week due to low white blood counts; returned today...YEAH, check off chemo #5. Number 6 on March 11 will be the final one! J-T here we come for Doug's benefit.
Paul (Disaster Master)...I wish I could capture words in the same way you do to be able to tell you how you have helped me tap into my inner self to keep moving through all this sh**t. I just want you and Doug to regain your health and strength...you have both paid your dues and then some in the self discovery that occurs when dealing with a serious illness.
Thought of you today at chemo where I must have downed 3 or 4 cups of tea! Susan

March 18, 2011: "We return to regularly scheduled programming"
Dr. called with CT scan results this a.m. No evidence of cancer and no evidence of DVT...chemo ended last Friday and blood thinners end today!
It's been like a whipper that ends well. Shock, awe, adrenaline rush and when it finally stops you think "that was exciting but not sure I want to do it again".
See alot of you down in JTree. Lots more folks out there need healing...it's my turn to give give give.
edit: hey, this thing all started during the baseball playoffs and ends with the March Madness. Maybe I need to change the thread from "Curve Ball" to "Dunk that Ball"....oh who cares.....it's OVER

Full circle ... from my last climb before ovarian cancer DX to my first climb post chemo.
Chemo ended 4 weeks ago, scan shows me in "remission, no evidence of disease" but as we know with cancer there is never the guarantee of "forever remission". The shadow is always there, but it is for all of us regardless of our state of health. We just keep moving into the sunshine; but after awhile even sunshine burns too much and it becomes time to embrace the cooling refreshment of our shadow.

Hey BDC indeed you and Zip were there to see the first shaky (very shaky) steps. It'll take some time to smooth out the rough edges...I still have neuropathy in my feet, a common side effect of chemo which hopefully will go away over time or at least get less numb! I was so happy to meet you...I love your posts and stories of the ranch.
Sully: we might have just missed each other. I was walking down in Cap right by your parent's house...looked like they missed getting walloped by the flood given the rise they are on...although it looked as if some of the soil banking their foundation was washed away. Was weird...Cap looks so normal until you see so many of the stores are not opened, or those that are have no flooring! Susan

Hey Nita, so I've heard. However prior to chemo I HATED needles and now after six months of non stop (almost) being a human pin cushion I'm avoiding them as much as possible. I am going to ride it out for awhile, see how much better they get over time before jumping in with more stuff...esp. involving needles or ultra bizarre foods and supplements!

Hi Paul, I'm doing pretty well. Scroll up a few posts and I put a picture of my first climb since completing chemo, bald and all (this was at JT.) My strength is "ok", mild to moderate fatigue bothers me from time to time...also mild neuropathy in my toes. I'm focussed on getting "detoxed" from chemo. My post chemo scan was clear and cancer blood markers are all in normal range. My next scan is slated for late summer. Thinking about you alot, hoping that you get connected to some viable options for your pain and getting that tumor mass reversed. Susan

Acupuncture needles do not hurt, and besides neuropathy, it helps with fatigue too...
I personally love the rested relaxed feeling- after a acupuncture session... I highly recommend you give it a try.

I recommend it as well. It doesn't hurt and you should not feel any discomfort. Good luck with it. It did WONDERS for me two surgeries ago...

Before turning over to my sisters in Pink (Breast Cancer Awareness Month: October) I wanted to do one last plug for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, September and my Teal sisters and supporters.
A wonderful foundation, HERA Foundation for Ovarian Cancer, started by a woman climber, Sean Patrick, supports Ovarian Cancer Awareness and grants by sponsoring several events and products. Their signature events are "Climb 4 LIfe" held in several places every year.
Another great way to support the foundation is purchasing of climbing equipment from sponsoring outfitters. One of my favorites, which people have asked about when they have seen it on my harness is a "HERA biner" which is a Petzl locking biner in teal color engraved with "Climb 4 Life". They are available from Mountain Gear.

It's official: I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack......
Almost full circle, have rejoined all my activities since cancer DX and surgery and chemo (completed 6 months ago).
Two of my favorite activities:
climbing (at Facelift 2011)
Mtn. Biking,Moab, October 2011
I haven't dived yet since the whole cancer and chemo thing but that's only because I haven't jumped at the chance just yet of cold water diving. Got an invite to Mexico this winter...I'll jump in the water there!
Thanks ST community....you've kept my spirits up through this whole experience. Hopefully I can give back as much as I've received and I'll never forget. and always find a way to help, those that haven't been as fortunate as I have been in their journeys to wellness.

Great Christmas present my regular every 3-month post chemo checkup and all blood work and physical exam show me still in remission and " no evidence of disease". Great to be sporting hair this year. I'm now nine months out of chemo. Next check up will put me at a year post chemo. Have to say I've been feeling really good and strength feels good. Just bummed no skiing yet since I missed last ski season. Snow please. Thats ok....Yosemite next week for my birthday. I'll take it.
Thanks everyone for all your kind thoughts and support this past year. I miss Paul this year and wish he were here posting right along with me. Raising a cup of tea to him.

A year ago today was my final chemo infusion (six of six over 5 months). So far all checkups "no evidence of disease" ...hoping to stay that way..next check up end of month on my son's birthday...good omen for continued health.
Looking forward to Gordos this year with hair! Yeah...

There can be second chances or at least decent extensions of first chances...and especially with sunny weather around the corner...don't let our outdoor lifestyle bite us in the butt.

My latest quarterly checkup and blood work....still in remission! I'm 15 months out from my last chemo. It will be two years in October when i was first Dx.
I hope other STers that are currently struggling with health issues will find their way back to good health also.

I have GRADUATED! I successfully completed chemo 2 years ago with clean scans and checkups since then, and I now move from checkups every 3 months to every 6 months.
It's a great feeling, but I am forever humbled by those that didn't make it this far and will forever feel a responsibility to live my life with fullness and purpose, carrying forward the memories of too many from this forum.
As any cancer survivor knows, we are never "out of the woods" but to live with the paralysis of "what might happen" diligently needs to be replaced with
