Kurt,

I'm not sure but I think it was Jim Collins in Colorado around the time he soloed the naked edge, his were really long almost up to the knee.
although Bacher was using socks in the late 70s just not so long.

Just about everyone wore tube socks in the mid 1970s, both for casual and for climbing. The knee high version was unusual.

In honor of the 4th of July holiday, and American traditional climbing, I'll be rocking that style up at Tahquitz this weekend.

Tube socks, painter's pants, rugby shirt, high-tops, hexes and a swami...

it's gonna be grand!

Hell, I still despise the feel of climbing shoes on bare feet - I'd rather go barefoot. Still always wear socks, and thick ones at that, but they've definitely always been low-rise - never was one to let that particular flag fly. Besides we always wore white painters pants so you weren't gonna see'em anyway.

A couple of news shots Mr.Tubesock in action...

From Climbing Sept/Oct 1978. I just saw a larger version of this shot with the belayer sporting the Tubes but I can't find it.

Collins on the second B-1 crux of Genesis during the first free ascent. Such drama with popping the blood blisters en route and all! From Climbing Sept/Oct 1979

Years ago I asked the Verm to grab seven sets of RP's while he was down under on holiday. When we met to pass the brass he said with a laugh "now you can go do Tubesock Tanline. You need about five sets for that one!"

Buy my Tubesocks. The legend lives on

Mr Brennan,

It isn't "modesty shorts" over the poly-pro, at least in my case.

The cheap shorts keep me from wearing the ass out on an expensive pair of poly-pro longjohns.

I got no problem walking into Biker Bars wearing lycra bike shorts when I stop for a beer on a ride, so modesty isn't one of my concerns.

What choices does one have?......
1) Tube sock (I wear them everyday)
2) girl socks (those ones that don't cover the ankle.....not for me..)
3) Black dress socks (at the crags?....please..)
4) Wool socks (This is California....not Wales...)
5) other....

It's the tube sock..all day;...everyday....(Now the thong I save for special occasions...)...

Although tube socks were just about the only kind of athletic socks you could buy in late 70's & early 80's I always looked for alternatives; not to be different but my legs were so skinny they wouldn't stay up.

Looking at these photos of tube socks brings something else to mind. When the vast majority of baseball players were wearing pants with stirrups and tube socks one guy was different and Chris Berman of ESPN tagged him George "Pants" Hendricks...

Tubes were the schizz.
As previously mentioned...
Knicker socks must''a been their precursor.

I still wear socks (and get heckled by the young sport climbers with hooked shoes).
But I long ago gave up the tubes for super thin silk socks.
