Okay - this guy actually lives in my neighborhood. I first noticed him a couple years ago at the corner deli. His face wasn't quite so inked back then, and was very much looking like he had an Eddy Munster hairdo tattoo.

I see him all the time, just walking around, running errands and such. He certainly has tats, that's for sure!

Paul Turecki did this one for me last year. Turning 50, it seemed like a good time to document the first half of my life. I guess it's a climbing tattoo... I grew up in Venice, in the water... the waves... moved to Idyllwild and then to Europe, with all the mountains in between... the mountains and then ended up in JT (hard to see because of the picture angle) Two Joshua trees. The other images are ... they just are.
BTW. Paul is an amazing tattoo artist and human being. He lives just up the street and I would highly recommend him. I guess I will see what comes in the next 50 years

Interesting stuff. I always find it amusing to see peoples reactions when they find out I have a few/lot of tatts (depends on your point of view- wife says I have a lot, I think I have a few- 10) some people automatically judge you.
Mine are all straight from the Good Book.

I got my first tattoo when I was 16. At the time I thought they were cool. My dad had some, my grandfather and my uncles all had tattoos. Some of them were servicemen but my dad was just a hoodum when he was a kid. It didn't matter I just thought they were cool and I wanted one. Later I got a few more to commemorate events in my life like the birth of my kids. The few tattoos I had were all concealed under short sleeves. When I was 36 I got a large tattoo by a very talented artist and I was hooked. Getting tattoed can be very addictive if you are bent that way. I am 45 now and have full sleeves and few large tattoos on my legs none of which are offensive,IMHO. I didn't tattoo my torso because my wife ( of 27 years ) claimed dibs on that real estate. I haven't been tattoed for a few years now but I have no regrets. I own a sucessful construction company and I have no problems meeting with clients while wearing short sleeves although I sometimes wear long sleeves if meeting someone for the first time. I have no issues with insecurity or self confidence. In hind sight I don't think it showed any lack of foresight, IMHO.

That's going to be quite a tattoo Nature.
For me, tattoo is like permanent postcards and don't have to be too well thought out or intricate to be special or memorable.
I never really considered a large piece, or really had the money or time to dedicate to one. Sure can admire them though.
I like sailor tattoos, but if I had the time and money I'd get a large realistic portrait of a majestic Jackalope with the Grand Teton in the background.
Don't go stealin my idea now!

Back when I was 17, my friend Josh had this great idea, "let's go get tattoos!", he then proceeded to tell me about a guy who could do it really cheap. Plus he wasn't real concerned with checking IDs. So off we went to get our first ink.
Greg was a sketchy ex-con with a body full of poorly done tattoos, but "MICHELLE" in giant Gothic letters across his neck really stood out amongst the rest. His "parlor" err trailer was even sketchier. Me being young and dumb and having a new subscription to Rock and Ice thought the little heal hook dude would be AWESOME on my shoulder. Anyway he sawed away on both of us and away we went happy as clams with our own sketchy half-assed tatoos.
Josh wanted to go back a few weeks later to get, Animal (from the muppets) playing drums. I said I'd pass on getting one, but would gladly tag along just to hear Greg's amusing hard time anecdotes. Greg answers the door, Josh looks at him and says, "Looks like you an Michelle broke up." I laughed, Greg didn't. Greg had a new black bar across his neck. Ha!
My little sister decided her calling was as a tattoo artist. I watched and encouraged her work for years, and then finally I agreed to a big piece from her. She drew up the concept we worked on as a testament to my lifelong relationship with geology. Here is the result:
A few months later I stumbled upon the link that Ed referenced above and submitted my photos and a brief story. I never heard anything back from Carl Zimmer, other than a canned "thanks for your submission" (not that I was looking for anything else.) Then last year I was perusing a book store and found Zimmer's book, "Science Ink" (http://www.amazon.com/Science-Ink-Tattoos-Obsessed/dp/1402783604).
Flipping through the pages I found this:
It hasn't made my sister famous, as we joke about, but it is a fun story for me and my boo.

I hate tattoos too.
I will forever associate tattoos with the first American I saw sporting one: Loris Lee McVey. I meet him at his arraignment on a charge of assault on his fellow death row inmate. I was his court appointed attorney. He was on death row for killing a fellow Hell's Angel he killed over a few motorcycle parts Loris thought the "victim" had stolen from him. He got convicted because he confessed this crime to his girlfriend. I guess he thought this increased his sex appeal? He told me about another girlfriend of his -"Dirty Nancy" - who during a notorious Hell's Angel's shoot-out had been injudicious and stood the better to yell at the cops. Loris's distress arose because this behavior made it easy for the cops to ID her, and she in turn dropped the dime on him.
Loris's tattoo was a real thing of beauty. I asked him about it. He said he did it to himself, looking into a mirror, while in prison. It was a giant scorpion on the back of his hand as big as a gorilla's with lots of rich colors. Loris had an unusual physic in many ways. Short but with a girth of easily 60 inches around both waist and chest, with thick arms, massive hands. He had a seriously undershot jaw bite, so large that it was ever-present. The same day saw his half-brother. Larry and Loris obviously did not have the same father. Larry was as small, jaunt and sinewy as Loris was a barrel from head to toe. Loris and Larry who co-occupants of death row, with a common mother. Loris and Larry were both charged with assaulting another death row inmate during exercise release.
So how did the fight occur? Weren't inmates released into separate runs? Yes, they were. But the separation was a climbable chain link and guards looked the other way if an inmate "voluntarily" climbed his own fence to get into some else's cage. Indeed the brothers had encouraged the "victim" to join them in one cell to play - then stuck him with a shank, intentionally inflicting (I am sure) only non-lethal wounds.
Loris did not want to cop a plea to the beef I was assigned to defend (it carried a mandatory 25-year sentence that would not even begin until he was paroled on every other charge against him, and of course, he already had a murder conviction and death sentence (which was never carried out though Loris didn't want to miss out on this last chance to get out of death row and into a courtroom where he would see real, live women! Once this logic was explained to me, I fully understood that I would be employed by the State of Arizona for a trial that might easily take two or three days if every played their cards right. The Judge was a good sport who had seen it all; the prosecutor took no umbrage at the death row inmates refusal to plea; he had assumed that would be the case all the long.
Since Loris was convicted and received the mandatory 25-year sentence, he was entitled as a matter of right to appeal his conviction to the Arizona Supreme Court. Yes, guessed it; I had to take the appeal with a straight face and "do my best."
Realizing what Loris wanted was as much time in court and out of death row as possible, and wanting to cover my butt, I had filed a motion to suppress Loris's confession of guilty for the subject assault. Loris told me (an no one ever denied and disbelieved him) that once the assault "went down", the prison administration told me would be held '"in the hole" until he confessed. You might have thought as a civilian that his confession was not needed. Oh, but it was. The "victim" was a fellow inhabitant on death row; at trial he refused to testify (because of the prison code of silence and the State had nothing to offer him; he was already on death row. The confession would be good for the jury to hear at the trial. Juries love confessions. In the average juror's mind, a confession is "the best evidence" - for surely no one would ever confess to a crime unless they are guilty and surely LEO's never do anything coercive, cunning, conniving, rough, tough, duplicitous or nasty in this post-Miranda world run by faint hearted, limp wristed, and ultra-liberal judges who love nothing better than to let criminal off on technicalities!
So I put Loris on the stand to tell the Judge (and later the jury) why his confession was "involuntary."
He explained the horrid reality of lost privileges so long as he was confined "to the hole" and not just death row! No dessert! No dessert in the hole; but everyday on death row. Why shouldn't he confess under that kind of pressure? The jury didn't buy it; or did the Arizona Supreme Court when I presented the involuntary confession as grounds for a new trial. The old coots on the Court treated me just fine; no sign of distain or lack of respect for my zealous advocacy. And they approved my fee application in full.
His defense makes more sense to me now, as a mature man, after living with my Mother who refused to eat anything but chocolate ice cream the last two years of her life (though she knew it would hasten her death) and a wife who can't quit eating premium Chocolate Ice Cream as often as possible though she abhors weighing more than 103 pounds. And wife is a very intelligent woman and highly trained professional.
So I say, we need more posters to show us OLD TATTOOs. Show me what they look like after 5 years, 10 years, 25 years.
The tattoo fad will pass. And when it does, if I ever need a new profession, I will set up shop as a tattoo removal artist. Not much licensing required to put those bad boys on; how much more fun to be paid serious bread by ex-nare-do-wells once they've grown up. The "you can't believe how stupid I was to get my tattoo" stories will be fodder for a best seller. Then I will re-retire as a successful author.

Yes, the fad will pass. That's what popular culture is all about - change, being different. Tattoos are so ubiquitous nowadays, their popularity can only go into decline. Tattooing the body as a human behavior will persist forever; it's popularity in this culture will pass. Soon. Whatever is hot today within the youth counter culture and "cool" has to change rapidly, about every ten years.

I got this 2 weeks ago in Bishop at Gypsy King via Chris Witty. For many years I have told myself that if I ever did get a tattoo it would be a Baby Angle. Not sure why an angle but I think I just miss pounding on steel a little. I think Don Lauria even mentions Dennis Hennek taking a swing at a baby angle and missing and hitting a finger instead in 'Dihedral Diary'.
The photo is of my right shoulder photographed in a mirror. There is some 'irony' to this in that I have a separated right shoulder from 13 years ago I did not have fixed. The other irony is that I broke my right ankle pretty badly at Alabama Hills a week after getting the tattoo. Now I will have steel in my right lower leg and ankle! I did not see that coming. I'm feeling pretty jazzed in spite of it. I've tried to go back in time and reverse it but have conceded to just moving on. Damn the torpedos!

Bump to say that I've never had anything to contribute to this thread until now, and while discussing tattoos with wife's cousin's girlfriend's plan for a floral sleeve I mentioned this thread and brought it up, only to hear she's met the guy in the 4th post. Not sure what to make of that other than surprise given the Cali-centric nature of ST and us being on the East Coast, but cousin and her seem to get along really well so am supportive of the relationship.

The Economist magazine thought tattoos merited a special feature!
The 2016 "Holiday Double Issue" includes a "Holiday Special" (complete with slideshow) about "Prison Tattoos" that "investigates what inferences about a life of crime it might be possible to draw from different types, and numbers of tattoos."

Using data on 100,000 inmates from the Florida Department of Corrections, the Economist studied the relationship between tattoos (by presence, bodily location, type, content etc.) and types of crime (murder, assault, theft, robbery and drugs).
The article also dealt with the strong correlation whether a inmate had a tattoo and recidivism. The effect was "especially pronounced for those with tattoos on the hands and face."
Tattoos may seem on the verge of becoming "Mainstream." Their roots lie with societal losers: prisoners, gang members. They have been adopted rather mindlessly as "cool" by rebels without a cause, hipsters, celebrities and posers.
Now I want to know: Do a majority of voters WITH tattoos support Donald Trump?

I try hard to appreciate ink,
its not my choice but I have lots of friends who have 3 pieces or more. all marks of dedication that span some 30 years.
but bad ink is Gwad icky, I've been watching Billy Strings video's
He has a full eagle on his chest, the beak just at the collar-line.
 last night he was sporting more new ink.
Bracelets & some sorta mismatched forearm shields. I was sitting ten feet away, kind of a shame, Three weeks ago he could still wear a T-Shirt & play at children's zoos `n stuff,

TWP, your hating on tattoos is hilarious. Lighten up dude. Its 2019, not everyone with a tattoo is a convict. And the roots of tattooing goes waaayyy further back then prisoners and criminals. Hell, Otxi the Iceman had a tattoo. He died some 6 thousand years ago.
The old question I've heard a number of times, "What'll you tell your grandkids when you get old and they ask about them? That's easy. "I'm going to go upstairs and bang your grandma."
That being said what kind of sick person would get a tattoo of a woman scrubbing a pig?
Me, that's who.
I was going for Sailor Jerry style pin up girl, but all southern and white trashy. The artist was like, "Dude, I can work with you on this!"
