David Katz sent this to us in raw form to share.
BrassNuts tooled it up for U-Tube:
Knee-high socks, swami belts, EB's ... all the adorable period trappings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qOlFRW0hZI
[Click to View YouTube Video]
Towards the end there is a wacky contextual blooper here, while watching free solo footage, we get the following overlay:
Commentator:
"Thirty feet up, Lynn is perched on a ledge the size of a dime; how does she handle her fear of falling?"
Lynn:
"It's only scary before you fall, after you fall it's kind of a relief, because you realize that it wasn't that bad and I've fallen 40 feet and just hopped back up on the climb and completed it."
Commentator:
"What drives these people to risk their lives for a climb?"
Largo:
"It's just fun ... probably the same ... as sinking a 35 foot jump shot or a sinking a long putt.
Enjoy!

Some of the background music is by Weather Report.
Despite any shortcomings, the more I look at this thing the more I like it;
Not a bad synopsis of what was then known at best as a corner-case sports discipline, seen only as a fringe outdoor activity.
And all involved are still more or less active!
Big thanks again to David Katz for archiving and kicking this thing back out.

Like we ever bolted to the crags in single file...right.
There's all kinds of gags woven in there; like some mutual "leg pulling" going on during the stretching routine.

I think I belayed Katz on that route Face of Magnesia or whatever he called it. I was just a punk kid ditching school one day when Katz came up to me and asked if I would help him put up a new route? I figured it would be another top rope or boulder problem until he started pulling hammer and bolts out of his bag. I am sure the fall in the video was staged because the route was 5.9 at best. Anyway a few weeks later I was messing around on Turlock and Mikey Waugh started asking around about who put up that travesty of a route and why would anyone bolt a piece of trash like that? Having the utmost respect for Mike and not wanting to draw attention to myself I silently walked on down the trail to Boulder One and away from anyone who could peg me as an accomplice.
This is the first time I have spoken about it and it feels kinda cathartic. Thanks for letting me get it off my chest.

truly fun stuff.
thanks, brother Tarbuster, for making it available to us, the (mostly) nameless rabble.
though i'm simply dying to know who did this gem. i suspect it was a piece from some local news crew -- as any larger outfit would have the budget (and hence the talent) to recognize in the editing room that actual climbers (like Katz) called them carabiners -- not 'kah-rhob-OH!-neers' -- and with that simply re-dub the moron 'voice talent'. hell, that moron couldn't have cost much for an a couple minutes of re-dub.
that said, while the producers and 'voice talent' didn't get it, there is some rather high quality photography in the piece, certainly back then.
~~~
like brother guyman, i especially liked the 'Unt now, Dah Team sprints up to the base of de planned objective, all in a line, to then Assault! the face...' part.
man, the amount of coffee i spewed as i watched that part of the video, in yet another of the endless string of motel walls i call home, took two motel 6 wash clothes to mop up. i don't know whether to blame it on you, or the quart of max-caf from the nearby truck stop.
though unlike brother guyman, the thought that quick came to my small mind as i watched that part of the video (still half awake, with like a quart of bad truckstop coffee in hand) -- was not so much a military exercise, but more akin to one of my niece's HS volleyball games.
yeah, like that. yeah, when me and my buddies head out to crag or boulder, we always start with an exuberant grab-azz clusterfook -- then we all sprint off together in a tight line to the base of our planned 'assault'. and once there, when any one of us either 'summit' or whiffs on an intended boulder problem -- we all immediately re-clusterfook, grab-azz, high-five, then sprint back to fall the next <V2 line.
i am entirely confident that all of you, and all your crews, do precisely the same.
[in hell]
sheesh...
PiP.
We do still, and did then, run single file to the crags like a high school girls volleyball team.
Promise.
Mr. Katz says it is was originally aired on "Eye on LA"
Not sure if that means they produced it as well; prolly so ... but not without copious input from the masters of mirth.
Some of those lines/words/phrases (nonsense) are pure patented Largo, (a.k.a. a Largosity b.i.t.d), maybe suggested to the p.t.b. by Gaines.
"Standing on a dime" fer'instance.
Eye On LA was a popular local 1/2 hour TV show that I recollect aired almost nightly for a while.
The narrator is Paul Moyer, a longtime anchorman for the the local ABC Eyewitness News at the time.
Thanks Roy, for bringing this out.
Unfortunately that's what they all still look like in my minds eye.....
Man oh man, there was some hilarious stuff in there, compared to the modern flicks with speed thrash metal soundtracks.
Does it look more athletic when they do those little micro clips of lunges and yells with the metal thrashing away?
BITD it was about looking smooth and fluid.
Yeah, that fall was staged for sure.
Looks like they had fun though!
Yep, I climbed Yosemite in a day all right. All of it. That howler reminds me of an old Japanese mag. featuring Blue Suade Shoes or some other problem in Camp 4. The caption read: Let's Bouldering!
The fun part of looking at that old tape was the clip of jump roping, which DB and I were really into back then.
