We have a winner!
(Tell him what he's won...)
Watusi, you've won an all expenses paid tour of the bouldering mecca above Lake Wohlford!
(No cash value. Not to be misconstrued as an actual prize. Not for resale in the state of California. Not available in stores.)

Yep, born and raised in SD. Lived 8 years at Lake Hodges and as some of you know did quite a bit of climbing in SD...:)Used to ride my road bicycle on all the grades around Hodges, Esco, and Valley Center. Had ridden quite a few times around the Wohlford area but the Catfish comment sealed it. No prize necessary just the pride in knowing the county better than most...

Lived Lake Hodges for 9 years thought it might be a secret stash further up the hill Mt Israel that I did not about. Hodges has Catfish too :) The person that runs the little bar at Wholfords use to be the wife of the owner of the Del Dios Country Store. Dont know if the place at Wholfords is even open still.
No longer live there, now in Pt Loma but have great memories of that area

Slakkey, remember the Battleship turret atop Mt. Isreal? An eccentric millionaire had it towed up there in hopes that he was going to build a rotating home upon it...(Never came to fruition...) Yeah I used to play in my band at Maxines all the time, (later to become known as the Del Dios Country Store.)

I figured somebody would get the catfish reference. The thing is, this little spot is really incognito... can't be seen from any of the roads or grades like Valley Center grade or Lake Wohlford grade, so you wouldn't have recognized it unless you'd been there.

Watusi, yep the turret alot has not really changed there except that the Country Store no longer exists. The person that owned Maxines currently lives in Del Dios Sam. He later sold it and it became the Country Store.

Used to drink at Maxines after work BITD. Good guess about Hodges Slakkey. The only stuff I'm aware of over there is that little crag above the dam. The Lake Wohlford Cafe has changed hands a few times over the years. Dude named Smokey owns it now. It's still open. My kid worked for him last year before he left for NAU.
Now don't you all go gitten your hopes up about this little bouldering area... most of the problems are short and easy. There's a few things to spend a morning or afternoon on, but that's about it. Just happens to be about a twenty minute walk from my house is all.

Yeah I remember putting up a 5.11 sport climb right at the spillway of the Dam at Hodges, "The Hodgeness Monster" probably doesn't see many ascents unless you know it's down there...The other crag high above the dam was developed by Kevin Worrall, The Hatchett Bros etc...

Good to see that someone else knows them as well. Indeed, they're on private property. Hence the obscure reference to them. I own property up there and live up there. Access is cool as long as you keep yourself low key and on foot. You might be surprised at the number of problems now.

Found this one yesterday. Probably walked right past it a hundred times, just never looked around the corner. Super thin tips. Steeper than it looks in the pic, narrowing at the top. About 12 feet high to a sloper top out. (Sorry about the pic quality... cell phone.)

Hey fellas. Found this info about Bottle Peak. Is this the same area?
"Bottle Peak, 2010: The California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) granted TECC $3.5 million to purchase 418 acres on Bottle Peak, the iconic landmark east of the city of Escondido at the headwaters of Escondido Creek. The County of San Diego subsequently purchased the second half of Bottle Peak creating an 800 acre preserve."
Looks good on Google earth.

Great orange stone, amazing patina, and good vibes. I'll bring beers next time ;-)

Bouldered up there a couple years back. Andy took me and The Yerian for a tour of the area. Andy is one strong Mutha and a hellava good boulderer....but then he has a private playground up there. Big mistake of mine was to not call him back! Maybe when I get stronger!!!
Peace

Ho man! Talk about dredging up some old posts!
RED-Point... no, not Bottle Peak. A few miles away. Been up there a time of two, but not sure about property issues in that neck of the woods.
Darkmagus! C'mon man! I don't know how you and Ron could only come up here once and then let it go!
Friend: Yup, got that one a few years back. It's pretty fun.
And Ron... it's never too late my friend!
