My graduate work was in Dynamical Systems so I did a bunch of work with Chaos Theory and fractal generators, etc. One of my professors (and a friend) was Dr Rudy Rucker who was an interesting mathematician, sci-fi writer and mathematical conceptualist. It all came from WAY too much acid!
Anyone read any of his books?

"It all came from WAY to much acid!"
I vaguely remember one of my best friends using that theory to explain to the security guards, why I was splayed out on the cement in the middle of a shopping mall one very crowded Saturday afternoon...admiring the beauty of a flower box full of Pansy's and muttering Wow...WOW!(BITD of course).

healyj,
your top picture is of a Lie group:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie_group
I only recognized it and no little of the math behind it, maybe other people around here can fill it the details. The E8 variation came up a few years ago as a possible form of the Universal Field Theory, as postulated by an unemplyoed surfer phyicist, I think there was a thread about that some time ago. They are pretty, and it would be cool if the universe was a nice closed form like that.
EDIT: Ah, I just reread your post, and you already know what I posted, my bad.

Very cool art submissions, watusi! Very interesting thread topic.
I HAVE to tell you guys about Andrew Jones (aka Phadroid) who I had the pleasure of seeing perform his art live this new years eve. He does a form of live fractal rendering that involves a dancer that interacts with the fluxing artwork. Very hard to describe, but absolutely beautiful and ive never seen anything like it before.
He stands at a computer, apparently rendering live pixel transformations, while a dancer behind some silkscreen propogates the movement of the fractals. Thats the best I can describe it.
Here are some images, but you HAVE to see the video to understand what I cant explain very well.
P.S. his "non-moving" computer artwork is unbelievable as well.

"It is worthy of remark that not only do fragments of such rock as limestone often present the characteristic forms of the cliffs from which they have been broken, but that morsels of mica slate will represent, in a wonderful manner, the identical shape of the peaks of which they have formed part." - Ed. Whymper
"That which has been described as a wall is such only in its grand effect. In detail it is a series of structures separated by a ramification of canyons. . . . each wall of the canyon is a composite structure, a wall composed of many walls, but never a repetition" - J. Wesley Powell

Cheers to all! I produce a lot of what would be perceived as "normal" photographic or artistic pieces, but was quite inspired by this thread and the literally infinitesimal possibilities provided by fractal art! I'd like to thank all of you for the kind reactions to my work, and want to add that even though I was known for my climbing related past there is a part of me, and as I've seen here many in the Supertopo community, that have an artistic side as well... Yeah enjoimx, the piece on fractal life forms was particularly evocative, (the music was nice also...)

Mike,
That piece you labeled "Venom" is fascinating. When I first looked at it, all I saw was a bunch of cool hearts flowing together. I couldn't figure out why you named it what you did.
Then I looked at the negative spaces...the inside of the hearts, or the spaces where they came together, and it did look like extended viper fangs.
What a metaphor for life.
Brilliant work! All of it--truly brilliant.

There are several "math art" type graphics in this section of my website. Only one of these is a "fractal" (meaning pattern replications at all scales), and it is what's called a "dendrite".
There are all sorts of ways to conjure up interesting graphics using various properties of mathematical functions. Fractals, however, have captured the popular imagination.
