We're making a film on the Vagabond during the time period between 1967 to 1977. We've interviewed Bev Clark, Chic Scott, Annie Haston, Larry Ware, the club founder Carol Rankin and several other notables of the era. This month we'll be interviewing Kor, Ted Wilson, and Davie Agnew.
I come to Super Topo wondering if anybody who hangs around here spent time in Leysin during that time. Any story is welcome. The more filmed interviews the better. We're also looking for any archival material relevant to the era.
The film is funded and recently was awarded a Banff Centre Mountain Culture grant.
Thanks so much
Allen

I'll contact Rick Sylvester. He has tons of stories, told in a rather roundabout fashion...meaning he gets side tracked frequently and has to use a GPS to get back on subject. Contact info?

A couple of my classmates from high school worked at Club Vagabond as maids during that time. They had some interesting stories about Dougal, et. al.

What about the widows of Peter Boardman and John Harlin? I'm sure contacting Maria Coffey would get you the emails of both women.

Thanks Jan. I'm not planning to go beyond the Haston era. The film is already out of hand and too big. As for Marilyn Harlin, she's not interested. I've been meaning to contact Maria simply for her insights into grief. I think she's in BC. Anyhow thanks for the suggestions.

Chic Scott (Calgary) may have memories of that era - he was there in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Although like they say about the 1960s, if you can remember it, you may not really have been there.

Thanks Anders. John is aware of the film. When the idea came to me he was the first person I talked to. I'm planning on getting back in touch with him very soon. Not sure how he'd fit in. He does have a lot of archival material though. I climbed with your brother when I was in high school in the Valley I think in 81. Or was it you?

You guy's were all there for sure. I certainly remember meeting Pete Croft and you under the Cookie. I seem to remember you guys where living in the parking lot in a white van. I could be though. I have a weird memory of a day that only a seventeen boy could have; there were two pasty British girls in bikini's sun bathing on the big boulder just off the old road. I almost died from the cold on the Nose a few days latter. Skinner showed up with Lisa someone who wore nylon jogging shorts so extreme that the teenage boys in camp four slept on their stomachs for weeks.

Hi there!
I received an inquiry today about one of our artists and co-incidentally the sender used the prefix "vagabond" to his email address. Subsequently I reflected on 64-65 at Club Vagabond, Leysin. It is with great fondness that I remember my first experience of spectacular alpine grandeur; (Les Dents du Midi and the valley), in my first visit to the Vag in the autumn of 64. I was working in London at the time as a bartender at the Zambezi and Barkston Clubs in Barkston Gardens, Earls Court, as also as an engineering designer at Hilger and Watts in Highbury. I had traveled to Europe on the the advice of my Perisher Valley (NSW) ski instructor Johnny Mueller, to become a ski instructor myself. Whether he suggested it out of getting a bit narky about me having a eye for his newly wedded gorgeous wife or that he thought I had genuine skiing attributes worth developing, I guess i'll never know. Anyway it was through the brief stay at the Vag that I heard about work prospects from Alan Rankin. I returned to London for about 6 weeks, gave notice to my employers, packed my bags and returned to the Vag in December. I promptly found work nearby as a domestic at Chalet Rhodania, a private school, under the watchful eye of Madame Dupont. I bought a fabulous set of giant slalom skis from Albino Viecelli and proceeded to practice four hours a day for the entire winter on the surrounding peaks. It was a fabulous winter, snowing seemingly every night throughout the season; constant deep powder. I returned to the Vag every night for a beer a "Martels" (half the price and just as good as Couvosier), and a block of Swiss chocolate. As mentioned elsewhere I noted that one could never tell the difference between the staff and the visitors at the Vag! There was a restaurant up the hill above the Vag near the Grand Hotel. I got so rotten drunk in elation, on red wine up there shortly after my arrival, that mountain rescue had to sled me down the trail to safety much to the laughter of onlookers. Shame on me! Nevertheless, Madame Dupont had me chaperone her girls to the Grand Hotel which was run by Club Mediterrane. A New Zealander called Bill waited table and taught English at Chalet Rhodania. Later in the season 2 Canadian boys from Vancouver Island helped in the kitchen. I understood one of them came from a family in the furniture business on Vancouver Island however details fail me. In those days I was never quite sure who was on the mountain trails; if they were from the Vag or the American School. What I do know though is that there were some absolutely crazy Americans who did particularly dangerous cornice jumping on La Berneuse sur Leysin. On leaving Leysin I went on to spend another 16 years on the Continent. I trained at Obergurgl under Prof. Hoppichler at the Bundessportheim in 65 and 70 and taught skiing at Alpbach, at Sport Ecke Augsburg, and at Lenggries for 13 years part or full-time. My main job however was as an engineer with Hq USAREUR and US Special Forces; finally with Feodor Burgmann in export. Fond memories of the Vag will remain with me. There are some photographic details on the "History" button of our gallery (STOCKROOM) website www.youngmastersgallery.info

I went to high school at Leysin American School from September 1971 to June of 1973. I went there to ski but got subverted to the dark side. Dougal Haston used to come down to the school and give us mini slide shows of his exploits. Sometimes he'd bring his friends with ... Chris Bonnington, Martin Boysen, Don Whillans... the whole crew. Sure made an impression on me!

I spent some time there in 1970. Boy, there sure was some heavy drinking there! I tried to have a conversation with D. Haston one night but it was so noisy, I couldn't hear a word he said-plus we were all pretty drunk!

Thank you very much for the encouragement. There is a lot of work involved. I will put up whatever details any person can remember. Just email it to me. I try to include every subject. Every one is now very old and this will be the last opportunity to track each other down.
George Kennedy's memoirs come out in the Fall and I am trying to record everything he can remember about the movie.

Allen, at the January 2010 Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, Chic Scott did a presentation on the making of the Eiger Sanction. Clips from the film, interspersed with his stories and photos. Ask him about it. He has many other stories from Leysin and the IMS, too.

I was there in 1966 and 68. I camped at the rock quarry up the road from the Vag. I was introduced to the Vag by my teacher and mentor Charles (Charlie) H. Knapp. He made annual summer pilgrimages to the Vag throughout the 60s and 70s, first being guided by Harlin and later by Haston, Boardman and Livesey. I climbed the Sphinx with Dougal and he also taught me to lead on the smaller cliffs. The lessons proved valuable to the initiation of my life long climbing career. Haston introduced me to EBs and I went to Liverpool to purchase my first pair. I used these in my earliest years of climbing in Yosemite Valley. I remember some pretty wild parties and lots of heavy drinking at the Vag. I returned to the Vag in 1983 just to see it again and to reminisce.

Anders, I actually have Chic on film. I spent two days with him. He interviews really well. He also gave me all the pictures to use in the film. I've interviewed a good chunk of the crew from the film. Even Annie Haston who hung around the hotel during the shooting. She died last year sadly. She was a sweetheart.
To all of you who have shared stories, thank you. The film is on hold right now because of money issues. Hopefully I can raise the remaining funds in the next few months. It's how it works. My last big one, "Jump!" took five years and nine trips to the Czech Republic. It was worth it. Anyhow I'll be writing individual emails when the time comes to start back production. Thanks again!

Sorry for my being incommunicado of late, Allen. It was a very heavy winter, one of the 4 or 5 largest snowpacks in the last 50-60 years. Periods of shoveling 5 or so hours every day, 1 to 3 shifts, like bailing to keep a boat afloat. My shoveling to skiing ratio was horribly skewed in the wrong direction, toward the former. My self-diagnosed OCD of course plays a role here too.
But the problem really dated back to September. I was gratified to get a couple of copies of "Jump" as I'd been requesting of you to go with my letter to Senor Eastwood; I felt the inclusion of your film would make for a stronger presentation in my attempt to entice him to interview for the Vagabond documentary. People in his position get so many requests on their time; it's unimaginable to us mere mortals. As I mentioned I see him just about every year in Monterey at the annual jazz festival since he's on its board of directors. In the past I've engaged in brief conversations with him using our former mutual acquaintance Dougal as the entree for my invading his privacy, such a concern to people in his position venturing into the public arena.
I was up until some horrible wee hour penning my letter to him (long live procrastination!), then left for Monterey the next day. I failed miserably; throughout the entire weekend I never caught sight of him once thus enabling me to deliver the letter plus film. This was the first time in years I'd failed to see him there. I thought I knew his taste as far as musical acts and left my seat several times to approach his box -- empty each time. Later talking to someone I learned he was there for one act Saturday night, one that in retrospect I might have figured would attract his interest. I felt I'd really blown it, totally failed. My preference was to hand deliver the stuff -- that's the only way one can be sure people in his position actually get things. But as a last gasp attempt I dropped by the festival office Sunday night following the final concert to ask to have it put in his box. I was refused since it was a private not a festival matter. I felt angry but knew that this was a correct course of action on the part of festival staff.
I rationalized that if the packet was accepted and you or I never heard back from Clint I never could have been sure if it actually reached him. Perhaps more important, the written in haste not to mention hand written and sloppy at that with cross outs and related really needed to be re-written with lots of changes and cleaned up. It would have been embarrassing in its original state. This became apparent to me only once I'd arrived in Monterey.
So that's what happened. Plan B. There are a couple of options. A teller acquaintance at the local savings and loan has a friend down there she stays with when she attends the festival who knows him personally, socially. I may be able to get it to him that way. Still, that's probably asking for a favor I have no right to ask. And of course there's this year's festival. Last September after the failure that seemed an impossibly long ways off; now it doesn't seem so far away. Related, I figured your film might be done by them so the whole thing, always a long shot anyway, would be academic. But maybe not the way it sounds things are going -- the funding problems and all. This whole thing about getting him, such a big fish (but a really really cool guy and it would be so great if we could "land" him) to interview for your film has become a major project and challenge for me. Now that I'm getting somewhat caught up in my life I can think of granting the interview you've long requested if you're still interested. But I'd really given priority energy to the above. Amen. I hope you're well.

Rick, no worries. Lets talk in Telluride next week. I'm assuming you'll be there. It's just as well that things got bogged down as the 50th anniversary of the Vag is in Sept. and it's going to a hell of a party. Lots of people are coming from around the world. So I'm going and should be able to finish the photography over that week. I'll email you the details. You should come. See you in Telluride. I'll be staying at The Icehouse.

Groovy, Allen. Love you madly, as always. So I'll be sleeping on your doorstep or some such at MountainFilm, not have to camp illegally (technically) behind one of the theaters as I did last year and get bit by a tick and think I had Lyme's Disease, the sick with worry over which ruined the first half of last summer as I thought I'd potentially ruined the rest of my life though in a different way from the way I've ruined it up to now (through climbing and worse). I was surprised when I got in touch with him again,
what a European style gourmet cook Layton has become.

A friend of his recently dropped off a good sized amount of several very good varieties of Swiss cheeses with him and he was delighted at the idea of making himself a raclette with white baby potatoes. OK, another shameless bump done.

Thanks man. This grouping actually came pre scanned and film was transfered to disk by the owner of it. What a guy. The next round of film coming was shot in 16mm and I'm not sure how we're going to handle that. It''s in Chamonix and hasn't been transfered yet. But if I do get some 8mm camera original I'll keep your offer in mind. Thanks again!

And it's not just about climbers. This guy knew and drank with all of the world famous cast but he himself was a world class skier. All kinds of people hung at the Vag. From Royal Robbins to Frank Serpico and everyone else in between.

I worked at the Vag in Fall of 1971. Anyone there at that time?

Visiting friends at the American School in the spring of 1967, we were persona non grata there so we camped out at the Vagabond Club for three days (which was off-limits to the students). Leysin is a beautiful place where I wish, someday, to return. PARTY!

New photos coming soon to Super Topo but more importantly the film looks to be finished by late July. I'll continue to bump from time to time for entertainment value and for hopefully a new story or two that might need to be filmed. Thanks for all the interest!

Jay, did you know Kim Ramsey or Peter Craig? They're in the film. Got any stories?

Bump for levity around here. The film is getting close to being finished but anything is still welcome. Photos would be great. Can't have enough of them.

I'll be darned. The bearded cat on the right in that June 19 kitchen crew photo is Court Richards! I remember a few stories about the Club Vagabond. He must have been the world's most amusing dishwasher. (Dig that towel!) The tall guy in the back looks like Ted Wilson, but I don't remember him looking that tall. Maybe he was standing on a fallen Scot.
