wow. didnt think anyone would reply to this one. my price range is vast, however, ive already got some great "A" and "B" monitors. im searching this site for a more "con/pro-sumer" monitor that i can use as my "C" reference. ive heard just about every transducer/box out there--now it's all about finding a "C" rig i dont have to pay MSRP for. ya feel me?

thanks for your reply

woow. just noticed you're from reno, mark. me too

Don't know what your A and B's are but...
A long time standard with engineers and producers are
Yamaha NS-10's BUT they don't make them anymore.
Here is what they replaced them with...MSP10's
(supposed to be better, but haven't tried them...)

PS: Mark...no topo in the yellow Meyers guide for the Direct, but..
A very wordy description in the old Roper guide!
I don't know if that will help?

400 bucks will get you a nice pair of yamahoopys. They went back to the white cones on the model I'm thinking of, but I'm too lazy to go look and see what they are.

Maybe tomorrow.

ok. yeah, should have known someone was gonna throw out the NS10 recomendation. sure, they were the industry standard for a long time...never really cared for them that much myself. i was more hoping someone had a pair of monitors to sell. anywho, thanks for all the replys...still looking for some.
preferably:
transducers: 6-8in LF Trans, 1-1.5in HF
Responce: 20-52Hz---20KHz(+) +/-1.5-2.0dB

Hey Shack if your lurking on this thread a copy of Ropers adventure would do the job nicely. If not I'll get a hold of you with in the week. Ropers guides frequently lead to grand adventure and a few cold nights. Yeah baby...

I never liked the way NS 10's sounded and if you have to listen to them for hours you might as well enjoy the way they sound. I'm using mackie HR824's and love them and usually for B and C mixes I prefer to leave the studio enviroment. I've got a rich kids( Friend) stereo system from the late 70's ( Sanyo amp and the Cerwin Vega 15"s designed for the movie 'earthquake') Still rated as good speakers. Then it's into the car after that . I have an ole pair of Digital Design 6" also but they sound like Dung. DDo you want them?

yeah, arent those HR824's sick!!! One of the only good products Mackie has on the market. Those things blew my mind. little pricy, but man, what a fab box! Im using Meyer X-10's/100 for A and Genelecs for B. the meyers are great (of course) but you can easily blow your wad just on those. ive got 3 (LCR set-up) and that ran $100,000.00 after it was all said-and-done. The Gen's were upwards of 10,000, but too, totally killer and worth it. i actually have a pair of those DD 's you mentioned. there are some mods that make them tollerably, but even then, still pretty poopy sounding. are you a studio owner in reno?

I used to own a small studio 15 years ago but got tired of all the "next great" stars that couldn't even tune their guitars or pay there bills.
I don't think I'd waste the money trying to improve the DD's.
I've had some songs banging around in my head since the early 80's and decided it was time to get them recorded. I've had the roland 1680 for years but was never totally happy with it's quirkyness, etc. So I went back to the Digital Performer that I'm more familar with. running the new DP5 on an old G5 with the 896 and 828, pretty cool, I'm not totally happy with the monitoring configurations yet, but still am playing with many different possibilities. I had a drummer from an old band come in and lay down some tracks but it wasn't appropriate for the material. There not drum solo's, so with the new dp they have a virtual drum machine included and I'm working on writing the drum patterns to be more groove based. I had an old Boss dr5 but an insect crawled into the midi port and hatched something and when disassembling it to clean it out things went from bad to worse,The songs aren't anything special it's just time to record them and move on. I'm familar with the genelacs a freind picked up a pair on Ebay. It sounds like with your high end budget toys you need something that the common man is going to listen back to on. Get a boom box from wallmart...

thanks for that.

upper Prosumer or pro,(asumming the prosumer is about as good as the pro) it's for a friend who is about to have to go to 5.1 and 7.1 for movie soundtracks.

Digital performer has that capability and more but man you had better have a nice machine to run it. It is gonna take alot of Horse power. Running 20 tracks from Mono to a stereo Mix with plugin effects works my ol' G5 to the bone. Probably need a new intel Quad G5, especially if he's editing sound for the movies. $$$$$...Recording in the digital domain is like motorsports, How fast can you afford to go.

i've done a lot of soundtrack work on a ton of different systems. the best? Logic Pro v7.2. i use 3 Mac Quad G5's Noded together-- giving me a sort of Thrid Reich type horsepower. referenced with Event 20/20 V2's (5.1). The only downside to this is that a suitable control surface has not yet hit the market tailored for Logic. you're stuck with the Mackie Universal (with expanders), or the Dig X/8 Bus...hmmm....wonder if the Control 24 interfaces with Logic.

anywho, i'll stop *regergetating this post back up to the front. im sure all the climbers are getting pissed by now.
