Day 4 (January 3):

Dirka, the King of Breakfast, and the Grand Pappy Hatchy.

Drika was glad to finally get in some real climbing, even if it was just Beginner’s Two (5.2) and the Bong (5.4). We don’t have any pictures of that one because Dirka was up at the top freezing as he belayed me which took an extra long time because there were like 12 people watching me and I got all nervous.

That night, it hailed. Of course, it ended up not being that cold that night after it stopped hailing.

Day 5 (January 4):

Day 5 was FREEZING so we decided to do a couple more hikes.

We started the day with the 1.7-mile (round-trip) hike to Skull Rock from our campsite…

…followed by the 4.5-mile hike up Ryan Mountain.

The summit of Ryan Mountain, a.k.a. “Das Mountain.”

Dirka leaving his mark on the true summit of “Das Mountain.”

About a minute after this picture was taken, I slipped and fell. I landed funny on my hand and hurt my finger. My first thought was, “Oh crap, I won’t be able to climb anymore.” Dirka said that when I fell his first thought was, “Oh crap, she hurt her ankle and now I have to carry her down the mountain,” and his second, once I said it was my finger, was, “Oh no, she won’t be able to climb!”

Dirka’s first aid on my hand. Interestingly enough, this is better care than I got at Kaiser when I got back… which might be why my finger still hurts 27 days later.

It was cold that night…

Day 6 (January 5):

…so cold that the olive oil froze!

Breakfast is very serious.

Since I couldn’t climb, we decided to do the 7.5-mile hike to the Lost Palms Oasis.

I want to take this moment to point out that Dirka is wearing the SAME black shirt here that he’d been wearing since January 1.

Dirka really wants to kick one of these, but he resisted.

Day 7 (January 6):

“Strong like bull!”

Since we had a bit of time before we had to leave, we did a short hike out to this damn.

Then I took pictures of Dirka doing some bouldering in the area.

I had a great time (this being my first time there and all) and we’re already planning to go back next year! Hopefully my finger will heal by then and we’ll have more climbing photos next time…

Nice! was out at the "damn" (LOL) last week and the water was low enough to make the traverse interesting.

Thanks for posting up!

Yeah, I really want the finger to heal too. I'm thinking about going back to Kaiser, but I don't want to pay another copay for this since the last visit was such a complete waste of my money...
