I got these shots using a kite to lift the camera. Friday, 11-28, around noon.

My other kite stuff is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30901290@N03/

Thanks, Chaz - I like the new perspectives you bring on our little rocks. And your charming low-tech methods just add to the delight.

Luckily, the military stopped doing low overflights out of Edwards over Joshua Tree, when it was made a national park. A lot of us over the years were more than startled by a fighter popping up a few hundred metres overhead, afterburners on. You'd have to worry about catching a F-18 with your string, too. :-)

What year did they do that? I think I can see where the road used to be.

From the top of intersection rock you can see EXACTLY where the old road used to be, it really shows how slow the restoration process is in the desert.

Once again, really cool stuff!

Have you tried putting a collection of these together in a photosynth?

Scuffy's green pathfinder, is at shadows edge, I think.

yeah the road thing is Weird, Brett. I guess it was last year when I went there after a maybe 10 yr gap, felt completely disoriented. Like being in a remodeled house, or the Phx highway system.

I'm pretty sure that the road changes (from Trash Can Rock to Hidden Valley CG and out to Barker Dam) were completed in 2004. And changes from Love Nest to Sheep Pass were completed in 2006.

BTW: Nice shots!

Here's what was left of the old road in April ('08):

And last week (different angle, different camera, different season, different light, but same general area):

Looks like decent progress so far.

I've been in and out of there dozens of times since the big pave-over, and the maze of new access roads still confuses me. And I have aerial photos to help navigate.

Bluering, these your pals?:

I just like this one. This is getting toward what I was trying to get that day (besides the broadside shots of Double Cross), I was looking for a shot of both faces of Old Woman from above looking along the knife-edge.

Chaz, yep, that's C-Dog and Barkus' vans in the upper-right. It looks like the slackers are standing in camp too.

Yes, 'tis true. And if memory serves, we were still discussing with astonishment the way that 5yr old girl knocked out that 5.8 in Echo Cove that afternoon for her first climb. (What's the one right of 'The Sound of One Shoe Tapping?) No fear, I'd have to call her style the "ratchet-wrench tadpole tap dance"
