I recently met some people who relied on food stamps for all of their food. These were completely healthy 20 year old people with no physical handicaps, yet they took advantage of a system for physically and mentally handicapped people. I was wondering how many valley bums out there use this method for getting food. I personally think it is pretty shitty. I have had to do some pretty low things to get some calories, but i personally draw the line on food stamps. What do you think????

Unethical? You bet, John. But I'm much more concerned about the corporate criminals and drug cartels that sap our resources. A few dopey climbers groveling is nothing compared to the pillage at higher levels.

...not to mention the 10 million of illegal immigrants on food stamps. Why should taxpayers support people who don't want to get a job to at least pull thier own weight, or never paid taxes!
Hey John. Are these food stampers students or something? I know of ppl who scammed the system like that while they were in school, but paid it all back, abbiding with state law, when they got jobs. I thought that it was cool for them to do that even though it wasn't totally honest.

I agree with you mike there are bigger problems out there. I just think that every little bit "hurts". I know it really isnt that big of a deal. Yeah they were students, but they (almost 100%) have no intention of paying it back. Although that is pretty cool of your friends. I just hadnt really heard of that many climbers doing it. I was just interested in knowing how much of the road bum community does this?

Lets say $150 per month is what the average food stamper gets. And lets say there are about 10 million illegal immigrants and illegit freeloaders (I’m not talking about single teenage mothers and/or fathers trying to get an education here) on food stamps right now. Generous numbers too, cause I know they're higher.
10 million X $150/month = 1.5 billion/month
That’s 18 Billion a YEAR! EVERY YEAR! ENRON execs didn't steal 18 Billion bones. They stole a lot, but not 18 B!

go to any mid western state and look at all of the brand new dodges parked infront of the welfare office. I don't have a brand new dodge,... huh maybe I should get into the welfare program?
Point is if you are able to work then F'n work like the rest of us. This is a Pay to Play society, if you want to climb in the valley but have no money then go cook me a pizza or scramble me some eggs when I come through on the weekends. Let the welfare system be used by those like a housewife with young kids and a dead beat husband that walked out on her and left her with nothing.
May your freeloading bad karma catch up with you 10 pitches from the nearest bathroom!

Yeah,I will work as much as I can so our goverment can waste my tax dollars on the drug war,and killing brown people for oil.
Or how bout I just sneak into the buffet every chance I get,and steal food from the village,when our goverment stops subsidizeing tobbaco corp. and the military ind. complex,then I will get a job and stop stealing food.Until then,all you right wingers can choke on my snorkal rod!!!

Facts:
There are no more foodstamps. AFDC (Aid To Families WIth Dependent Children) recipients now get a card that looks like a credit card to use; every Mother's Day (the first of the month) credit is added. This change was made because people felt stigmatized when they had to use the old coupons.
Illegal immigrants can receive AFDC if their children are born here since the children are US citizens. AFDC is after for the children not the parents.
The parents of poor children are also entitled to Section 8 housing credits (free rent) and healthcare.
The biggest area of abuse is the disability system. There are no checks and balances. All you need is one doctor to say you are disabled and you qualify - there is no panel that reviews applicants. In all states, being an alcoholic or drug addict qualifies you for full disability. In CA, several cases in which people claimed that work caused them mental distress have been upheld.
Full disability is just over $2500 a month, tax free (i.e. $30K take home), plus free healthcare, dental, and housing credits.
You're probably thinking this stuff is rare, but its not. The best way to see it for yourself is to do volunteer duty in your local county hospital Emergency Department. It will quickly become apparent what a problem this is. Nothing better than someone with a sprained ankle from playing basketball who doesn't work 'cause they're on disability.
Maybe if so many people weren't screwing the system it wouldn't cost 20 bucks to get into the Valley, or Red Rocks would have enough money to build a nice campground, or ...

Taxman, You don't deserve this response but for anyone paying who feels the same way you do...
Most of us aren't right-wingers, at least not that I can tell. I, for one, am moderate on many issues and go back and forth. But, I'm a climber, and there's nothing more important to me than having our personal freedoms protected as hard working people in our persuit of happiness (climbing of course). You however like to pigeon hole people so you can have an argument. Week. Do you realy think there's only 2 kind of poeple in this country? I too don't like what the govt is doing with our tax money (hmm you sound like a righty there yourself). That's the problem, agreed?
What happened to the cigarette industry is their own fault. Denial will always shoot you in the foot eventually. Problem is that it shoots adicts (and their families) in the foot more than anybody. BTW that was a left-wing deal taxman! Who's side ARE you on?
As far as the war on drugs... I couldn't agree with you more. That's the one area where righties are hypocrits. They are cheep as hell, but want to spend spend spend if it will make sure people can't have pleasure that is not "God fearing" or "falling in line". Most politician repubs support it because it gets the base votes. Catching on now???
And killing brown people for oil... what oil were we going after in Afghanistan? I though we were going after butts (if you know what I mean). And who fired the first shot in the Gulf? Who fired on who in the Yemeni port? And BTW, do you pay for oil? Who gets that money? The UAE does, that's who. If you don't know who that is I suggest you spend many more years reading up before you develop an opinion, because you sound like headline clip.
I hope you take this possitivley and go educate yourself. Remember the old addage: If you're 18 and not a liberal you have no heart, and if you're over 30 and are not a conservative you have no mind. I'm glad to see you have a heart, I don't like people who lack one.
