Greetings,
The Khumbu Climbing School, a program of the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation, is entering it's sixth year this January. The program aims to make the high altitude work the Nepali people do on behalf of expeditions safer through instruction of basic climbing skills.
Mission Statement
To increase the safety margin of Nepali climbers and high
altitude workers by encouraging responsible climbing practices
in a supportive and community-based program.
The program is run in conjunction with the Nepal Mountaineering Association and takes place in the village of Photse, Solu Khumbu each winter. Instruction takes place on the frozen waterfalls in this region. It works out well as the Nepali students are not working in the trekking business and it is something fun to do in the winter.
The equipment used for the program has been donated and purchased over the years. For the sixth year we are hoping to outfit each student with a pair of technical water fall tools. In the past we would have 3 or 4 pair per group of 8 students. This year we would like to have each student climbing with a pair of tools. To reach this goal we need an additional 30 (15 pair) of water fall (preferably leashless) tools.
What we are looking for:
* technical tools 45 to 55 cm with decent picks
* tools that still have a usable life
* no glacier axes
* carabiners, screws, belay devices
* cash donations to purchase tools
If you can help out send me note and I'll get the shipping address to you. As a 501c(3) non profit you will receive a tax deduction.

On a side note the Khumbu is home to many great waterfall climbs. The Votek article in Alpinist titled "Losar" is a great introduction to the area. One can stay in tea houses and climb in most conditions (ie: you don't need summit weather).
Losar (Tibetan new year) is the 2000 foot climb above the children.

Hmm, sounds like a good cause. I may do this if my return to ice climbing does not work out.

Thanks to all of you who have sent in a donation. Bruce from 62901 - you rock. Your cash donation will help out a bunch.
In hopes of generating a little more psych please check out this auction:
http://shop.ebay.com/items/__gasherbrum-iv-pack_W0QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em301?_trksid=p3286.c0.m301
It is a killer pack, a replica of the old G IV pack designed by Greg Child. This though, is the Dano deluxe model. Made out of bright yellow haul bag material, complete with haul loops and a top drawer lid, this is unique pack. For cragging it will last many years, for walls - probably a few. Or if you are into the mantle shelf thing it makes a great conservation starter. Only three new units left.
This is Jeck, in the Khumbu. One of the many ice climbs. The mixed variations - still open.
All the proceeds go to the KCS ice tool program.
Thanks
