For instance, mine's Tahoe Climber.
When signing on, I was living in South Lake and searching for potential partners, so it seemed to make sense at the time.
Now I don't live there, and it seems silly, but it also seems silly to change it, as you get to know someone by their handle.
My buddy Off Route got his from a near disatrous lead on Tenaiya peak when he was learning to lead - he got, uh, off-route and wandered into harder, licheny territory. Very appropriate.
Of course, the question assumes that your ST name isn't the same as your real one...
So I've wondered on a few of these. Like, how did Watusi come about for Mike Paul?
How about Oli for Pat Ament?
T*R/SS?
Is "Christ" weschrist's last name?
Locker?
imnotclever?
Ouch?
Does crimpergirl really dig crimps?
Jaybro doesn't seem to speak bro/bra.
God knows we've wondered about A. Crowley, and the things that picking that username implies.
What's some of the ones you've wondered about, too? I can't remember all of the truly interesting ones.

I was born and raised in Chico, and when I moved to Mendocino I ran into another guy from Chico. He was a total burned-out dreadded stoner, and was always asking me for a ride here or there. "Eh yo, Chico! How 'bout givin' me a ride to the Co-op? C' mon bro. I'll get you stoned..." Of course, I always did...
Well, time passed, and before long I was guiding for Shasta Mountain Guides. Clients were always asking me where I was from, so I would say, Chico. Often, there would be hordes of people climbing Avalanche Gulch, and it was difficult to distinguish who was who out there. We used radios to communicate between guides. Ironically, there was another guide named Spencer who I worked with, and the confusion never ended, so my buddies just started calling me Chico. I guess it stuck.
There it is. Not extravagant...

Again, the question assumes that you're one of the ones who didn't just use your name - OR your initials - or some mixed version thereof.

Jerry- My dads war buddy in Nam. He didn't make it back. Don't ask.
Dodrill- No choice in that one. It's pronounced "Dodd-rill." Dod -like Dodge, rill -like hill.
Using your real name has pros and cons. Kinda keeps you honest though.

Several years ago i was climbing a route called "cmon knucko" at the owens river gorge. At the time this climb was above my ability and i kept taking falls on lead. after several good whippers the crowd of people who I did not know started yelling encouragemnet "cmon Knucko" after this the name just stuck.

Back in about 1993 I was heading out to Owens Valley to do some graduate research (digging holes and doing soil profiles). I drove out in my buddies toyota 4x4 - there were three of us. On the highways when I was sitting bitch I would move my leg from the passanger side to the drivers side. At one point my good buddy Tom Harvey LeRoy (the man with four first names) looked over and said "oh leg-boy move your leg" - he needed to shift gears. Within an hour it became nature boy. It quickly shortened to nature.
It brings back nice memories when people call me nature (I sure do miss the time I spent in Humboldt with those friends I hardly ever hear from). One time I remember a guy asking "is your name doug or nature?" (the profs called me doug but Tom/Gio/other friends called me nature). I'd go years without hearing that. But now that I hang out with more folks from the taco I hear it more often - I'm not sure Sooze or Russ has ever called me Doug.

All my friends locally know me as Nick Danger, it has to do with my checkered medical history, but that seemed a little presumptuous considering the legends of some of the other posters here. So I shortened it up. Usually sign my real name though.

Standard gangsta rap lingo "I'll bust a cap in yo azz" (translating in normal english to "I'll shoot you"), make it somewhat climbing relevant with the El Cap. Thus, Elcapinyoazz.

Kuan is my real name. I suppose I came up with it in an uninspired moment. Like Jerry says, it keeps you honest!

John Moosie

It was recommended to me that playing on the intardweb could get rough and since I have noob tendancies, I should hide my real name. So I chose to use my first name and one of my nicknames.
I earned this nickname because occasionally I act like a moose on the loose and go on rampages, but most of the time I am kind and friendly. Hence, moosie and not just moose.
I decided awhile back that I wasn't going to worry about anyone knowing my real name. I got tired of worrying about such things. The world is a kooky place at times, but most people are decent if you treat them as such.

Ekat, you get can more then one ID on a computer if you use a different email address. But I would never do that.....haha... :-)
