Just was on Yosemite.org checking out the Ahwahnee Meadow webcam and there's either a weird cloud around Half Dome or smoke. Anyone
know what this is?

O.K., I must be losing it! Five minutes after I posted this thread I went back to check out the webcam and now things look clear. Rock-fall maybe? Didn't really look like a cloud.

I just got back and there was a huge chunk that came off the left side of Half Dome on Thursday that my friends on Tis-sa-ak said it came off from just left of Bushido and was the size of a house. The slab approach to H.D. is wiped out!! Another chunk came off Friday afternoon as well. The whole gully is filled with shards of pulverized granite and the trees are so filled with rock dust they looked like a fresh snowfall had just ended.

My guess is that all the fixed lines are trashed and it will take a few winters to wash down the debris where it might be safe to go up there again. The size of the debris field is just huge.

My friend Mari & I went up Snake Dike Friday afternoon and we were thinking about going up the slabs and up & out the Bushido gully to approach Snake Dike but we ended up going the regular way thru the Broderick/Liberty Cap notch. Good thing!

I'll be interested to see if any parties use the slabs anytime soon.

Thanks for posting your info Levy. I've been wondering exactly what happened. Sounds like this was pretty extensive. When I saw the questionable "cloud" around Half Dome, on the webcam, I had a feeling it may have been rock-fall just because of the thick cloud rising out of the gully. Saw a rock-fall on Middle Cathedral a few years ago, when I was up on Nutcracker, and it looked like the same deal. This time it was just too difficult to be sure since I was viewing a still shot of it. It was such crazy timing, on my part, to have been checking out the cam when this happened!

you see?
you see!?!

it wasn't glacial activity that created yosemite valley, it was rockfall!

besides, since everyone in their right mind knows that the world is only 6000 yrs old., it follows that this pagan ice age mythology is all full of crap.

who wants to see some flowers?
