I think that is a shot of Jim Adair on "A dare by the sea". The next season he tragically died on the approach to the Chouinard Herbert.

Yes Super Crack of the Gunks, '77.
The text is quite dramatic as well.

As an Off Topic note of interest:
Many of you may know that Vern was a prime contributor to the Tuolumne legacy of FA's during the 70's.
In a big way he spearheaded the modern standard of free climbs which many of us enjoy there.

Now, he's got kids, he's got brain tumor, he's going in for more radiation.

Could be a good time to support a comrad down, a major builder of our sport: while he's still alive and kickin' would be cool.
You can also purchase some of his stunning photography.

Here's his website:
http://www.vernclevenger.com

I'm told the Gallery address is correct, and that may be the best target for donations presently, as the home address and pay pal features may need to be updated.

Here's a July 8 '06 pic,

I was always fond of the cover of Ascent 1971.
The Chouinard photo of Doug Tompkins getting pelted with spindrift in Scotland. Was made into a poster.
My source material is no longer available, but maybe
Steelmonkey or Ed H?

scuffy_b I've been meaning to scan that picture of Doug Tompkins in, the picture shows up in Chouinard's Climbing Ice and was one that really got me interested in ice climbing (did I mention that I had really poor judgment on choosing climbs based on cool pictures?).

Also I have the Summit with Tom on the cover, just as described by Mike. and I just have to get my ass organized to scan it in... I'd put the article in too, but only after asking Tom if it was ok... (some personal stuff in there).
