If you are interested in early guide info for Cal. you should consult Climbing Guidebooks if the United States, Part I, California and Arizona, A Preliminary Bibliiography and History of the CLimbing Guidebook (1993).
The 1956 Wilts Guide was a seminal book, and the first to use the new Decimal Rating System -- latter exported to Yosemite and renamed the YDS. It was not the first guide to Tahquitz; rther the third. Two earlier mimeo guides (1937 and 1943) preceeded it as does a Revision Sheet to the 1943 guide (c1946).
Though the Bibliography is not up to date, it has essentially everything published through 1993, including early and extremely obscure stuff.
