Trying to raise clueless to an art form? OK. The book you plan to write - Trolling for Dummies?
Chapter 1. Blog selection.
Topic you do not know - or feign ignorance?
Chapter 2. Play dumb blonde
Claim brunette though.
I don't get it, please explain. Works every time.
You can't overuse this. If the target won't explain, someone else will feel compelled to. (See chapter 3)
Say you are a writer. But misspell at least 5% of the time.
Malapropisms are good. Example use allude when you mean elude.
Compliment those who catch it by remarking on their intelligence.
Chapter 3. Transgender techniques - (Men only)
If you pick predominately male site (most are after all),
try playing the opposite sex. Be flirtatious.
Easier to do if you are a Brit.
Chapter 4. Pretend you missed the joke
I still do not understand. Works every time.
You can't use this too often.
Chapter 5. Understanding avatars
Pick a name that is hard to fake.
I used LEB since the only possible fake is LE8 which is too
lame for anybody to try.
Avoid things with lower case L since uppercase I looks like it. Example KarI Baba may look like Karl Baba.
Double vowels - To the average blogger WBraun and WBruan are the same.
Avoid names that 75% of the population can't spell. e.g. toluene. (It is the same as tuolene, toulene, toleune to most.)
Chapter 6. Safety
Posting pictures can be risky. Do not use your own.
Claim to be married (to a man).
Chapter 7. Research
Be familiar with historical trolls.
The best defense is a good offense.

Did I miss any?

rec.climbing has been around a long time and is a Usenet precursor to these "high tech" sites like SuperTopo... etc...

They are much more prosey than ST, but many of the same avatars appear there...

When I lived in Massachussetts and did more Mountaineering I posted there because the that crowd's knowledge was geographically broader. Now that I live in California and have come under the spell of Yosemite, again, I prefer to post with the local crowd... though I still lurk in the other world.

Juan has many faces... you can see him there also as Rockstar. There is a good group of knowledgable people there... though the time of rec.climbing has past.

For whatever it is worth, I take note that Juan is rather attractive (nice cheekbones)

Juanito, I detect a SERIOUS challenge to your supremacy!

LMAO - That one was funny! LEB, somebody gave you the trick. I actually believe you aren't a troll. I hope that is not insulting. :)

I did not post last night when I saw the clever impostor. I was wondering how many it would fool. It caught Werner, too. No, I do not know who that was, but it was clever.

1) Click on the poster name. Then click on posts by that person.

or

2) Drag on the name, copy and paste into your word processor. Change the font if necessary, e.g. to Times Roman. Then you will be able to tell the difference between cap I and lc L.

Do you know that you live as close to the Gunks as you do to your abandoned quarry (toxic waste?)? Some people have very thoughtfully agreed to show you how to climb there, when they otherwise would be climbing at a world class destination, at least arguably of the quality of Yosemite - though without any "Big Walls". BTW. I would be willing to bet that at least half of the really famous (used loosely) people that you have been chatting with have climbed at the Gunks.

LEB, LEB, LEB. I don't get it. You seem to be responding about the last two posts as though you think they are two different people. Am I confused? Or are you?

I must confess. The reason I did not volunteer to introduce you to climbing - I could not face a two hour ride explaining jokes.

Just goofing. There are so many "for Dummies" titles, it's probably already been written. I guess analysis of intent is as weak as pattern matching.

BTW. An easier trick for separating out look-alike names - Edit, Find, (optionally match case).
