You have to find a place on the 'net that will host your photo.
Then, you get the web address of that particular photo, and, surround that address with "img" surrounded by brackets formatted just like the "help" link shows.

what is the reason some posts contain images and some contain a box with a x in the corner? is it my browser or the poster's choice of hosting site?

It took me some effort to figure out how to post photos, and I had a lot of help. But if I can do it, so can anyone.
Here is a paint by numbers method, which has worked for a fair number of SuperTopians. (I update this occasionally, as PhotoBucket changes its website.) I'm sure there are other methods, and that geeks will disdain such detail.
1. Have photos on your hard drive, either from digital photos or scans.
2. Make sure they're reasonable e-size, not more than 100 – 200 kilobytes. (To find out, right click on the image. One of the options will then be "properties" - left click on that, and you'll learn the size.) A photo of more than that size takes forever for people with dial-up to download, plus ends up wider/higher than a standard screen and so impossible to look at.
e.g. If you have Microsoft Picture Manager or something similar, open the photo. Click on the “picture” toolbar. One of the choices is “resize” – click on it. A menu pops up. Choose the “web – large” option, click “OK”, and the resized photo appears. NOTE: If you save the resized photo, give it a new name, as otherwise it disappears the original higher resolution one.
3. Go to Photo Bucket (www.photobucket.com), and create an account. A basic account is free, and all you should need. You'll need a user ID and password - don't forget to record them somewhere, for later.
4. Once you have a Photo Bucket account, log in.
5. A page will appear. At the top, there’ll be things like “my albums”, “group albums”, “find stuff” and “what’s new”. Click on “my album”, although it seems to be the default option. On the right, options like “my computer”, “web URL”, “mobile phone” and “e-mail”. Click beside “my computer”. In effect, you’ve now told PB that you want to take photos from your computer and put them in your PB account.
The words “upload images & video” appear, with a blank box below, and a button to the right that says “choose files”.
6. Click on “choose files”, then select whichever picture(s) you want from your hard drive. If you want to choose more than one, hold down the “ctrl” button on your keyboard as you click on them with your mouse. (I haven’t used the bulk uploader feature – Photo Bucket works by selling advanced features that make it easier to do things, plus of course advertising.)
7. Once you’re chosen all the photos you want, Photo Bucket uploads them - it essentially takes the photos from your hard drive and puts them in its memory, with an address so that the mysterious internet knows where to look for them.
8. In a few seconds, the photo(s) (mini version) will pop up below (try scrolling), together with a name for each (based on whatever you named it), and various icons, which can mostly be ignored. Move the pointer over a photo, and a box with four sub-boxes will appear below. Left click on the bottom of the four boxes with faint type, the one that says “IMG code”. That automatically puts the URL (address) for the photo in your hard drive, temporarily.
9. Your computer now has in its memory a reference to the photo, in the right size. A "tag", URL. Geek speak for an address.
10. All you need to do now is start a thread on SuperTopo, or post a reply to an existing thread. Type whatever message you want. Then put your mouse cursor at the place you want the photo to be. Right click, then click on "paste". That sticks the tag (URL) in the place where it'll be in the message. Not the photo itself, just the tag - a reference for the ST server.
The photo won’t actually appear, just something like: “http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i31/Anders-Ourom/oct131408046.jpg[/”, with [img] at the start and end – the URL.
The URL for a photo should usually go on a separate line, to avoid making wide posts.
11. When you’ve finished writing, with text where you want, click on “post this message”. It’s then added to the thread, but the photo magically appears, instead of the URL – you’ve provided the address, and the ST server knows to look for a photo, and where, and puts it in.
All the photos that you upload to Photo Bucket sit there, so even if your computer is turned off, they're there for people to look at. For practical purposes a photo on ST is in the public domain, although it’s possible to add the copyright © thing to the photo if you know what you’re doing.

Could be either I'm guessing.
Most common might be that the hosting site is blocked on your computor?

briefly, before you edited the last line of your answer above, there was a box like that within your text line, now replaced by img, i'm guessing that triggered a link with a null return because it had brackets. that prompted my question. i want to have my pictures hosted by the site that links them seemlessly and doesn't throw up those box icons but i don't know which site that might be. if i try photo bucket and it doesn't, i guess that's my answer. but i still wonder what i'm missing when i scroll past those box icons. once in a while they say something about expired account, but not always.

Hoob - Photobucket has a pretty seamless way of getting your photos to the forum.
Upload your photos to photobucket from your hard drive, then photos will have all the link/post/show addresses listed at the bottom of the photo... copy the link you want to post and paste that line into the forum page.. should work like a charm...
(BTW - How, exactly do charms work? I haven't got a line on that just yet... but I'm still in the r&d stages of my initial investigation of this most importatn issue.. but that's neither here nor there!)
