In spite of a threatening forecast nine volunteers showed up for what is believed to be a first adopt-a-crag day at Tahquitz Rock, where the volunteers and a forest ranger, Andy Smith, did trail maintenance. The hard working group made the trail a little easier going and much more obvious to both those going up and down with the hope that climbers will stick to this route and avoid the other routes. Andy will put in a small 4 X 4 post on the Ernie Maxwell trail to mark the start of the climbers' trail. We had a great group and got the work done much more quickly than Andy expected and I wish to thank all of them. It was a first time at an adopt-a-crag event for most of the group, but they were enthusiastic about the work and ready to help again, when their backs recover.

Climbers, please stick to this trail in accessing the climbs on northwest, west, and south sides of Tahquitz so that erosion damage can be minimized. And encourage your friends to do likewise.

I'm not knocking these guys but it took the Forest Service 40 years to do this?

Andy Smith is the new Recreation Officer in the San Jacinto District- he has a background in USFS recreation management from a District in Utah. He is one of the first dedicated FS resources toward recreationalists in the SJRD in many years. Having met him, I found him to be very much invested in supporting the outdoor/climbing community that regularly uses and visits the San Jacintos.

He (and the other volunteers on this project) should be commended for taking the initiative so quickly to assist and support the outdoor community. Thanks, Andy!

Its important to keep in mind too that it is a very, VERY fragile place to climb. With the fire danger and the threat of burning the town down, not to mention that you currently don't need a permit even though Tahq and Suic are in designated wilderness... We really need to keep that place in good condition if we want to keep climbing there.

Every year they have a discussion on whether or not to add tahquitz to the permit system, and there is always one or two people that argue against. When those one or two are gone...

Thanks to all that responded. Hope you enjoy the trail and the climbing. I'm eager to get out and climb this time.

Please keep me posted if there is a problem with the trail.

I was at Taqhuitz the day the trail was completly washed away.

The flash flood nearly killed me. I was holding onto a small tree as the water washed my feet from underme.

Could you pave the trail and put in steps.

I guess I gotta think of a new approach-joke.

The "screw it! let's just rappel back to the parking lot" spew doesn't work when there's a trail.

Trail up to Lunch Rock was nice - the sign post with the WC biner is a nice touch!

I just wish you could have done something to make it a bit less steep....

Again, many thanks for the hard work - would love to help out with the next effort.

Thanks to all who helped in this effort. I spent a summer in Idylwild in 1978 and even then, the trail was badly eroded. I contacted the forest service that summer to try to muster a trail project, but never got it done. Great to see you guys made it happen.

I assume there is more work to be done. I have to believe that with a thread on ST and some organizational help from the Access Fund, you could get at least 50 people out. There are surely some Southern California mountain shops who would supply incentives to encourage participation.

If there is a need for a followup project, I would be happy to try to help.

I had talked to the ranger about this project and he though we should keep the group around 10. Since there were so few needed and the potential for chaos large if the group was big I just contacted my climbing friends. I think we had 9 and got the work done in 3 hours.

There is more work to be done and I'll let you know next time since it is only fair to share the load.

I started on this as Southern Cal regional coordinator, but am thinking that we need a climbers coalition for Tahquitz/Suicide to be the voice and muscle to maintainthis great area. Any thoughts?
