Climbed the Barb on Spearhead last week and wanted to post a quick trip report/photo log.

Splitter weather on the hike in. You can see Spearhead above Black Lake

Looking across the basin at the rock.

Plush bivy at the base.

The route. Lotsa wandering on this one.

Simuling the first 3.

Starting 4, where the climbing gets steeper and better.

Fiddling with my nuts.

Storm clouds rolling in over Arrowhead from the top of Spearhead.

Chief's Head from the summit.

Back at the packs by 12:45. No pics from the hike out because we took the full brunt of nature's fury. Hammering thunderstorms with hail and the cool colorado rain made for some prime suffering. We actualy had storm gear and were miserable. The tourists we saw in shorts and t-shirts 6 miles from the trailhead were probably fairly hypothermic by the time they made it out. It was at least novel to be cold in July.

Hey bill,

Small world...I was one of the guys you met near your bivy site...we'd just climbed Obviously 4 Believers.

That storm was brutal!! I heard the guys on sykes had to rap the route from way up high...

Hey Josh,
Good to put a face with a name. I'm pretty fired up for high country routes right now and can usually get out at some point during the week. Drop me an email if you are ever looking for a park partner.

Hey, bestclimberever.

As much as I enjoy the Gunks, believe me, Spearhead is a whole different ball game from cragging, beginning with the approach, the difficilty of climbing (5.9 goes a looong way there), the weather etc.

cheers,
d

Hey worstclimberever, you would probably pee your pants on a climb like this one with a storm rolling in. That adventure looks awesome. Thanks for the pics and TR taco.

Yes, it doesn’t matter whatsoever how steep or how hard it is just being up there in that environment is so wonderful. You are so lucky to be able to do this.

Nice! The Barb is one of my all time favorite routes. The crux pitch is spectacular.
