That stucco should make it a lot easier for kids to tag the structure!
Thanks, NPS!

As I understand it adobe walls are easily damaged by rain when not protected by a roof. They turn back into mud. If this was the problem here the NPS faced a choice between erecting a roof (and interpretive center) or putting on a protective coating that might be later removed.

Jstan - the original structures were not adobe. They were brick and mortar. The "restoration" has made them into a movie set style of imitation adobe, under which lies the actual remains. The Park Services best option was to just leave it be, to let nature gradually reposess the old ranch, as it would have if we were not there. Ten years from now this stucco job will look horrible. What a joke.
See my third photo.
I have hung out in these old houses many times over more than two decades. Anyone besides me (and a few friends) ever hang out in the huge old water tank there in bad weather? It was a great shelter. Of course now it is all locked down.

Hey, lets all jump to conclusions and get in a tissy online, while actually never doing anything about it or researching it.
Definitely looks lame... but it looks cooler than the original version with "SK8TR" carved into the brick. Thats a high traffic area, JT's equivilant to the half dome cables. Even with a fraction of the traffic, too many idiots going by that site. I'm surprised its lasted as long as it has.
Thanks to Steve for dropping the english all over your earholes.

"why don't they fuking FIX the damned road in Indian Cove BEFORE doing that UN-NECESSARY nonsense???.."
I don't disagree with you Lockn00b, but the reality is that NPS (and all other govt agencies) don't have one big pot of money that they fund everything out of. Funding is often specified for a certain type use or even a specific project and can't be re-directed.

The area where the guy and his kid were out picking up cans is an old dump site, this is where the name for trashcan rock came from. The area out there used to have many more "antiques" but over time they have been mostly collected. The "armed" response was to protect the few remaining pieces of history that remain in the area. While it may seem like old trash, these items are an important link to the history of the area and a lot of useful insight about JTNP has been gleaned from this old junk. As a side note rangers have been shot at by artifact collectors. Some people are not just out there to collect stuff to decorate their yards, some people make bunches of money digging up native american artifacts and selling them on a "black market" of sorts, they make enough money and the punishment associated with getting caught is enough to lead some to violence to protect their finds. This is why you saw rangers out there with rifles.
EDIT: When is Doug B. going to weigh in on this topic?

I wonder if when they (NPS) should clean up all those nails and broken bottles.

What an eyesore. Who in their right mind could have thought this was a GOOD idea?
Does this mean that the rusting old jalopy is now going to be replaced by a new Ford Mustang?
