K scooter, gotta set ya straight, just because this has to be one of the best, unintentionally funny decisions in years.
the NPS response to a climber soloing a questionabl rock was . . . .
(wait for it)
To ban fixed anchors in that park.

"i liked climbing better when there was no money in it and everyday day that i went climbing it was for my dreams, my visions and my pleasure....
so if DP gets railed and folks make songs and write books and blogs, then deal with it cause this is life in the 21st century!!!!

Seriously. Where was Odub when Masters of Stone II came out? Your ubermullet would have made for a good verse. ;-)

Thanks Kurt.
The reason I didn't post the attorneys info is that he was doing his job... nothing more. I know how the internet works, and he would have received a bunch of email for no reason. Its not his fault... or is it?
I received a call today from Deans attorney, claiming that Dean knew nothing of the Cease and Desist, and that he was merely acting in Deans behalf.
I don't know... you decide. Believe me, its not that I want the attention. I released the song with good intent, to get people to comment on the new Arches plan... If not for that, I would have waited till the album was out.

Odub, this is a very strange development: "I received a call today from Deans attorney, claiming that Dean knew nothing of the Cease and Desist, and that he was merely acting in Deans behalf."
At least tell us what State this attorney is in, please!
Because this attorney has just created a conflict of interest between Dean and himself. Why would this attorney send the letter without Dean's knowledge? This makes no sense.
Maybe Dean came to his senses and asked the attorney to pull back because the backlash was more than expected?
Sure wish Dean Potter would post up here. But I understand - a guy is not obligated to go around putting out fires that were not of his making (i.e. first his lawyer sends what sounds like an unauthorized cease and desist letter, then a bunch of internet threads pop up to discuss it).
Sounds like Dean now has a possible case against his lawyer - by sending the cease and desist letter the lawyer has damaged Dean's reputation among his peers.
Anyone going climbing this weekend? I know I am, can't wait.

What???
Are you kidding me? Attorneys don't blow their noses without charging someone for it. This esq. is misrepresenting himself somewhere--either by first saying he's representing DP, or now by saying he's not.

it's not just what "they" do as a direct reaction to that specific climb (or climber) that matters. that ascent, and it's publicizing after the fact, further color the attitudes and opinions of both land managers and the public at large wrt ongoing and future considerations of access for all of us. "they" already think we have to be held at bay in order to protect the rocks from us, and that type of thing serves to reinforce those attitudes and harden stances, etc. nobody lives in a vacuum, and to pretend it's a bunch of people crying over nothing is ridiculous at best.

I googled the guy, and he is an attorney. According to a congratulatory list posted online, he passed the bar in Winter, 06, in Washington.
My guess is that he's a climber friend of Dean...

I was looking for the famed DPotter Arch film on YouTube; couldn't find it but here's a (little off topic) cool climbing video
The reason you could not find it dude, is because it does not exist. People assume that because we shared it with the SLC news -as a curiosity piece of sorts- that there is this video out there that we are somehow all getting rich from...but it is not there. It was shown once, and that is all-and it was given to them for free, for no other reason than because they contacted me and asked for it.
In fact, I will personally falate any supertopian who can direct us to a link of it ANYWHERE, or even produce a copy...and that’s a good offer..I suck a mean ...oh...er..I mean, I'm sure I would, if I ever...well, never mind.
But seriously. No one has even seen it; so stop it with how we all publicized it and all that crap. It never happened. Less that 8 seconds of the video have ever been seen.
MATT: in regards to the T.R., he actually mini-tractioned it with the rope carefully placed in a groove as to make no marks. It was never even weighted. Dean even rapped a single line, run through a crack, down to the ground where I counter-weighted it. Not even near the groves that exist (they are likely from previous ascents, and there have been a few.)
We made no reference ever to a fixed anchor ban, and broke no laws. There was no law making it illegal to climb anything in Arches...(We even asked a tool to be sure). Just some loosely worded lingo about the tool being able to close stuff at will.
We were never sighted, never warned, never charged, never arrested.
All this crap about how we should go by the spirit of the law, not the letter...that is bullshite. Anyone who has ever filed a tax return knows that. The letter is all there is. If you find a loophole, enjoy it. Exploit it. You’re not likely to get many in this life.
Any one who knows me-or Dean can vouch that though we may behave childishly from time to time...well, often actually, that we speak the truth.
And that’s the way it is...
Respectfully, (no, really)
Brad Lynch

C'mon man don't go there. You didn't release it so people would comment on the Arches Mgmt plan. you released it cause you made a funny song and you wanted to show it to people. Lets not be disengenuous here. You lampooned a guy and you wanted to show it off.
Now if Dean really had some balls he'd challenge you to a battle...OR he'd release his own dis track so that we could start a real beef!!!
Come on Dean!!! Beef with Odub!! It'll be the Common vs Ice Cube of the climbing world!

I guess I should have said:
I released the song WHEN I did to raise awareness about the Arches Management Plan.
I had just released a song to several websites. I had no intentions to promote this song on the internet. Fact is, I thought the matter was drawn out too far to begin with. The song was written and recorded immediately after the solos of Dogs Roof and Heaven. Hell, check the thread on this site about the new management plan...
