Just heard that apparently last weekend there was a shooting (perhaps gang related?) at Knee Jerk City (New Jack City)...outside Barstow, CA. Does anyone know anything about this?

We spent two weekends out there in October and noticed an increased "bad" element in terms of the people out there spending the night. And I'm not talking about the normal red-neck off- roader, shoot-at-the-rocks type of people that hang there, I'm talking somewhat threatening "gangy" type people.

We were completely terrorized the second weekend out - camped quietly and starting to go to sleep - three of our party in (3) tents, us in our camper shell on the truck. Next to us (and there was no reason to be next to us, there was plenty of space NOT next to us) pulls in a huge truck trailer. It's about 10:30 pm. Two of us are up and sitting by our fire. These guys off load their quad runners and proceed to ride them (doughnuts, etc.) all around US, up to the doors of the tents, dusting us (scaring us). They're gangy. They're drunk. They're big and there's a bunch of them. Finally we got up, packed our stuff and left. They were decidedly NOT the type of people we even considered asking to stop.

Coincidentally earlier in the evening a Ranger had come by to say hello and see if we were ok. I know they're out there but we haven't seen them that often (actually in the 7 or so years I've been going out there I've only seen them during the day and only occasionally). I told him about something disturbing that had happened the previous weekend and asked him if they were armed (they are, they get sent out there rather than the sheriff since it's BLM land). He took off to go find someone who was shooting guns in the dark.

Jack, if you're lurking, fill us in.

Kinda makes Riverside Quarry sound nice by comparison.

Guys that place was a dirt bike slash gun slash lets get drunk and kill something place way before the climbing got there. I used to go to that place when I was knee high to a grass hopper and it was called Salt Tooth Canyon. Kinda pissed about the New Jack thing but hey whatever. Just my 2 cents

Sounds kinda of like the shaved head Latino garbage I saw at Stoney Point today. Write your congressman I am sure they will get right on it.

If you park at the Northern end of Topanga you are much more likely to get the window of your car smashed. This is happening again.

Hi All,

Thanks for the link Indian Climber...it's sad that it's gotten so bad out there. The taggers and off-roaders we could deal with, even the all night partiers to a degree. The weekend we had the problem with the shaved head gang crowd the Boys Scouts were out in full force. Good thing they weren't there over New Year's. Dang why can't these a-holes go somewhere else out there? There's plenty of space on the other side of 247...

I've noticed an increase in other user groups (other than climbers) out at New Jack ever since the BLM installed a Pit toilet out there.

a friend and I were camped next to the 'activities' mentioned.
The highlight was when one of the kids that got shot went running by our tent trying to get out of there. I was more worried about getting nailed by shots going in the air.
It was an enlightening experience. That happened to be our first time there but despite the incident I'll still go back. Bad sh#t happens everywhere. Welcome to kalifornia; expect it.
