Ed, I just got back in town to see this. Thanks so much for doing this, it will be a big help. Now we just need to see if we can wrangle IHatePlastic into managing sales with his Stonemasters tour / T-shirt e-commerce website.
Also, we won't have pricing info until we get new quotes on handles and heads from those companies and Theron gets a grip on the finishing and assembly costs. He's swapping ideas with Deucy on that work and once he's comfortable knowing what it's going to take we'll announce pricing.
I should also note that we'll somehow be working donations into the mix for the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation's [url="http://www.alexlowe.org/kcs.shtml" target="new"]Khumbu Climbing School Program[/url] as part of the deal, either into the pricing or asking folks for donations above our price.

ok people, the way it works is thus:
if you are on the list in the opening post (OP) of this thread then you are identified as one who wants a quantity of hammers (greater than or equal to 1).
The list is alphabetical to make it easier to find your name... and your "name" is your SuperTopo handle, so that someone can send you a SuperTopoGram at some point to verify your request.
To get on the list, post in this thread, or email me a SuperTopoGram if you don't want to be public... I can put you on this list, or on a "none-public" list... your choice.
If you aren't on this list, or if you didn't want to be on this list, but on the other list and did not hear from me, then YOU AREN"T ON THE LIST.

Anyway, the main difference between this hammer that Theron is about to produce and all the other hammers on the market (and in fact, all climbing hammers since the Yo Hammer and the Forest Big Wall hammer), is that this hammer is forged, the others are not.
Forging changes the grain structure of the metal, aligning the grains in the direction of "flow". This results in a much better hit/rebound effect.
There's a reason why all professional framing hammers are forged. Hammer with a forged hammer and your elbows will be in better shape after a long day of nailing.

Nice little article on forging in that google list.
I've swung the A5 hammer on a wall and it has a great feel. I've swung a ton of hammers and the A5 has the feel of a great hammer from the moment you pick it up. I've only swung one other hammer that had a similair feel. That was a solid tang handle 16 oz ball peen made in the 60's. Both are masterpeices of design.

Instead of A5, just flip it horizontaly to look like an error was made. Seems like my mind thinks that way while up there using a hammer a lot. Plus it mocks the current North Face A5, which can suck it! Or don't put a name/label on it at all and we can all do are own thing to it!

I am running off a loaner A5 hammer (which kicks ass) for 4 EC routes and 1 Tower route now. I have had to beg, plead, and grovel to keep this thing in my possession and I am to poor to buy my own at the moment...

hoipolli, nice to see your loaner is getting worked.
2 of these for me would be excessive gear whoring. I was out aiding the other day and couldn't even bring myself to take out the A5 hammer I'd bought off Marty as its in such flawless condition, so perfect. I'd told my partner it was coming out with us, and he was disappointed to see my ratty Kong Eagle instead. It looks worse than in this old picture, but the A5 looks the same as it's never touched a piton or a bolt.

I don't really control the production aspects of this, I stepped in to help organize the list of people to get an idea of what the "market" for the hammer is...
... healyje and T Moses really have to say when they will have time to work on the project so that it can complete. If raising $s for the next step is what is required, we could organize that.... the problem I see is how to estimate the completion after the next step, which will require their time.

Ed, I'm still in for 1 hammer!
Need to know the final cost as soon as you can fingure it out... I'm in that more or less unemployed state. ie. waiting to start getting pogie and finding odd jobs here and there, but I'M STILL IN FOR A HAMMER!
Can't wait! I know the first route I'll be really testing it out on (after I have some crag play time... hmm that could be twisted)... the first big test will be finishing a new route I had to put on hold when the snow started flying in the fall.

OK, the first and possibly only run of these hammers is for 250 heads. Given various issues with manufacture, there may be as few as 238 hammers...
right now, I have confirmed interest for 130 hammers, with a possible max interest in 206 hammers. There are people who have not previously shown interest that are now.
SO at some point we may actually run out of hammers... those who have not responded (see the list above) with their desire for some number of hammers should do so or risk someone else responding and getting in line ahead of them...
if you send email to me by whatever means always make sure to include your SuperTopo name, which is how my list is driven... while I know a lot of you, I don't know all of you.
You can also respond here, but I'd like to have your email to ease in communication. My mass emailings use a "bcc:" list so I'm the only one who can associate your email to your name to your SuperTopo avatar.

I'm trying to help with the organization of the list... this is an interesting exercise in grass roots fabrication boot strapping, once the first hammers are back and assembled the hammersmith will have a much better idea on cost and schedule.

I just wanted to confirm that I am in for one hammer.
There will be progress pics of the project.
I am super busy at the moment. Taxes, moving houses, kids, cam hooks/tomahawks/rivet hangers, regular work. Where did my climbing time go?
When I get further news from Ajax I will post it up. They said 8 to 10 weeks versus their normal 10-12 weeks. They must be slow or something. ;)

Yes/no depends on PRICE.

I have no additional information on the hammers....
the heads were ordered from the fabricator in late February, and were not expected back before the end of March, at the earliest.... there is quality control to be done on the product, and then assembly and testing...

Odd question perhaps but...any chance of being able to pick up and extra handle with the hammer? I've gone thru a couple handles on an old Chouinard hammer and each time I've replaced one I've had to modify the handle to fit the head.

We don't have price yet, still working on it.
We'll likely have a small donation built into the price with the option on the screen to donate more (probably as selector of some fixed donation levels to make the web programming easier). I'll look into the tax receipt business.
We haven't sorted out what we're doing on picking serial numbers yet beyond the thought of auctioning #'s 1-10. We'll also put some more thought into handling specific # requests.

I think it's pretty cool that this all came together and it's been great fun watching the process, especially with pictures! Sadly the price got a bit beyond me for something I don't exactly "need" given the several functional ,although not nearly as nice, hammers that already only see use a couple times a year. Great work though!
