Friday night was Sushifest at the Creek and it was, let's say, interesting. Three minutes after we landed at Creek pasture we were treated to an exploding sunset. Of course I was busy zipping into my 6 down parkas, three hat and couldn't find my Sorels so I missed the shot. I'm sure someone will post up because everyone had their cameras out and were clicking away to the north where the color was. When everyone put away their cameras, I looked south and got this one:

Did I mention that it was cold? Here's Nature rolling some fish popsicles:

Something's just plain wrong with eating sushi at 15° but sitting around a table playing poker is even wronger:

At the SF in Snow Canyon, the the sushi experts convinced me that straight up Uni topped with a quail egg was the way to go. I sacked up and popped one in my mouth but it got by my taste buds before I had a chance to savor the moment. So when nature got the Uni and Quail eggs out on Friday I was all ready:

Only problem was that the Uni was frozen. Did I mention it was cold? Here's nature working the eggs:

It was great. I made sure it went onto my tongue, uni-side-down, for full effect. It was rich, powerful and made me think I was sampling the sea.

Doug was the hero of the night. Imagine handling frozen fish with your bare hands for 4-5 hours in 15° temps. Thank God the wind wasn't blowing. While we were all lined up waiting for Hamach-sicles Doug was freezing his ass off for us:

I didn't see it and, even worse, I missed the photo but I guess that in an effort to stay warm and thaw the fish, nature's pants caught on fire and the tent wall melted. I'm sure someone got that in pixels. Due to his dedicated service and hang in there attatude in the face of all nature can throw at him, I formally nominate Doung LaFarge to the honorary board of bad-ass winter alpine climbers. Anyone else in on this one?

Edit: Also thanks for posting photos that uploaded in a reasonable timeframe!

Before, when IO had AOL, I didn't think the upload of photos(in general) was slow for dial-uppers, and wondered why people were complaining.

But my computer broke, and I got a laptop, and at the same time switched service providers.

NOW I understand why people complained about s-l-o-w-w-w-w uploads. Again - thanks, Mal.

Thanks for the report Mal. I am sure it was a blast. Not sorry I missed the Arctic temps. I would have been rolled up in a ball the whole time. It's cold here in STL, but nothing like that stuff. Yeow.

we pulled into IC at midday on TG, and it was balmy out!

the whole world was looking for sun at battle
(so we climbed at supercrack)

the forecast was 10% chance of precip (20% on friday), and the slight but even cloud cover made us just a bit nervous

but we certainly didn't expect to awaken to this:

susan and i were camped a just few hundred meters from sushi central (w/ our pals aaron and amy from santa fe NM), but it was looking like a long wet walk

so i decided to find the least snowbound path available

of course, it was unreasonably chilly for us having just come from 10 days surfing in costa rica (where all your landings are soft ones), and maybe in my mind, i was still there

hey nature-
maybe we should have the next sushi fest here?

but that's gonna be another TR all together

(edit- as noted in another thread, we split friday morning after nature fed us some yummy half thawed sashimi, drove back to SLC and caught a SWA flight home that night- back on the ground in the bay by 6:30pm. didn't get any group shots. so sorry to have missed the evening crowd, props to those who braved the frigid utah night! did anyone climb on the weekend, or did the snow stick around?)

Maybe it's a turkey call. There are a lot of them down in the Creek and it was pretty cold. We felt like we were eskimos eating fish popsicles. Hot turkey would have done us well and, besides, it was Thanksgiving weekend.

Costa Rica looks like a nice place for a sushi fest...either that, or we heli in to the side of a volcano that's going to blow sometime in the next 30 hours...sushifest-extreme...

PMB - did he dump any video? I'd really like to see the video of me doing the yoga on that cool rock.

This was just a nutty event. Extreme Sushi. I put fish inside the cooler to keep it WARM. Like... WTF?!?!?

I still have all my tips and my toes. Granted, i tried to slice one off with one of my razors (It still blows me away just how sharp I can get my sashimi knife).

WOW, that sunset is amazing! Nice photos!

I was bummed that I missed it, until I saw the snow photos. The only time I've made it out to IC the weather was worse then that. Red rocks were cool but no precipe. Looks like you guys made the best of it and had fun anyways. You might take the photo of Doc out of public record. What Happens at Sushi Fest should stay at Sushifest.....Poker in the snow looks hardcore.

Hi Everyone,SF IV XI:XXIII/XXIV IC (in English that's, Sushi Fest 4 November23/24 Indian Creek) was a BLAST! Yes it was cold but my heart was warmed by all the attendees, and The Creek itself. If you're there with good friends and you're prepared it's hard not to enjoy yourself at The Creek. They say a picture is worth a thousand words( although I agree with the sentiment I've always found the ratio to be a bit exaggerated.)Alas I have no camera so I'll try and paint a picture of this memorable Thanksgiving 2007.
Wednesday 5AM- After a month of record temperatures in Flagstaff the icy grip of winter has finally taken hold. It's about 18 degrees(very similar to the Creek, But I'm in a nice warm house. No packing has been done and I've promised Riotch I'd climb the Mexican Hat at 3PM MST. Off I go into the chill of the morning to make my appointed Bread rounds. Luckily everything goes smooth and I'm back home at 11AM. A quick 45 minute pack ensues and I'm off across the Navajo Rez to one of the shortest yet coolest summits in America. As I pull up I can see Riatch already under the sombrero with an aider clipped to the 1st bolt. He used the only piece of wood for miles to stick clip it. After a quick 6 minute lead by Riatch I take stock of my original idea to try and free the hat on TR, but it's about 40 degrees and blustery. I opt for jugging and after a quick celebration on the summit we descend to set up camp for what will be the first of many cold nights. Thanks to everyone that brought or stole firewood. It was a godsend. Riotch and I roll up to the Splitter camp on Thursday morning, but see no signs of SFers, and all the sights are occupied. Thank god it snowed 6 inches that night, by the following morning every single campsite bailed just as our group straggled in. Interestig that not one person under the age of 30 toughed it out. Just an observation. Also after the first night all the beautiful women bailed with one exception. Props to Crista.After a mellow snowy rest day we were greeted to a frigid but crystal clear morning. By 11 AM a group of us were shirts off at the bas3e of Rock Lobster. Worth the trip alone. The nights, well, we do what we do .Eat the best fish around, courtesy Nature, huddle by the fire, play cards,you go Crista!, socialize with old friends(6 months at least), Radical,PMB,MisterE,Nature,Ricardo carlos, Prod and Crista, and meet new friends Jaybro, MikeSalt, Steve It was grand. Tucson SushiFest 2008 end of January or beginning of February. Peregrine closure is the issue here.

As a result of monitoring conducted by the Southern Arizona Climbers Coalition, the Coronado NF is able to permit access into the Rockfellow Dome Park, Dragoon Mountains effective through 6/30/05 except as follows: being on any part of Cochise Dome or Unnamed Dome immediately southeast of Cochise Dome is prohibited through 6/30/05. I'm not sure what that means. Anyway, the idea floated is to do it before Feb. 1st which according to some sources is when the Rockfellow group closes. There's a ton of other stuff to climb so.... the later the better for the warmth. IT won't be toasty anywhere in the states.

Hey Crimpie: I was thinking... maybe we need a sushifest 2007 yearbook. You up for the mission? Maybe others can help organize, etc?

Man...You guys are digging up some dirty laundry of days gone by. Sorry I missed that one (I like it cold) and would have enjoyed playing poker with the lot of you, regardless of the temps...Of course when it gets that cold the cheap beer starts to get ice in it...that's what the cooler is for to prevent freezing.
