A few hours ago I received a call from Michael Reardon regarding the tragic accident involving John, Anastasia and his partner Steve.

At Michael’s request I’ll post this note he sent

Around midnight last night near the Nevada state line, John Bachar, Steve Karafa (President of Acopa) and John's girlfriend Anastasia were involved in a car accident on their way home from the trade show. We're still not sure exactly how the car ran off the road (no drugs or alcohol were involved), however, Anastasia suffered minor injuries, Steve died at the scene of the accident, and John was air-lifted back to a hospital in Utah.

I spoke with John this morning and his primary injuries were to his neck and spine, of which four vertebrae were fractured. So far, it appears that John will have a full recovery physically and may even be released from the hospital in the next couple of days, however, the loss of his close friend Steve is another matter entirely. The same holds true for Anastasia.

John's father is on his way to the hospital and his son is still with his mother for the summer. I have been told that Steve's father has been contacted as well. I would ask that folks politely respect John's privacy while he deals with this matter, and will keep you posted as more details come to light.

My condolences to Steve’s father whom I just met in Salt Lake City and to his family and friends. My wife and I wish John all the best and a speedy recovery. I understand right now he just wants to get home to his son.

Condolences to Steve's family.

Still trying to find out the extent of John's injuries, but if they are considering releasing him from the hospital "in the next few days" I trust he's not horribly injured. Should he be so lucky when his friend and partner died.

Hope you are okay, JB.

So sorry to hear about this... Wow! My heartfelt condolences to Steve's family and friends.

Glad you are OK, Anastasia. Hopefully a speedy recovery to you, JB. You let me know when you need those CD's I was bringing. Since they won't be for jiving and climbing for a while, maybe they can help you jive in your mind while you recover, brutha!

Thanks Mike for the post, feels like getting hit with a block hearing this kind of news. I'm sure John and Anastasia will have the help of a lot of friends in and out of the climbing scene. Pray and think for Anastasia, John and Tyrus. Deepest condolences to Steves friends and family. Hope all is well as can be John.
Peace
