First the business: Here's the link to 264 of the photos that I shot: http://web.sendtoprint.net/proofbook/login.asp The event name is: Joshuatree (First letter is capitalized.)

Now the disclaimer: I don't want to hear any complaints about prints costing too much or soft focus or I didn't get so and so right in the center of the photo. Save your complaints for the guy that got paid.

Finally: What an awesome evening. So cool. It was like a trip through the wayback machine. Hope everyone likes the photos. Or at least I hope that they don't all suck.

That is the most complete coverage of the event so far. Very nice... I am just wondering if anyone has a shot of your mug? You deserve a good picture of yourself in the midst of that.

Actually, there's a couple of me in there. I'm standing next to Russ the Fish (he's the guy with the woman's fur coat); I've got the blue striped sweatshirt. By the way, the shots of Bachar wearing glasses - those are my glasses so that much of me made it in there. ;-)

I have to say that it was really something seeing everyone there together. Old duos reunited: like Yaniro and Leavitt; Bachar and Lechlinski; Largo and Lynn Hill, even Bill Leventhal and I. The two of us put up those routes in Malibu but hadn't spoken to each other in almost 15 years...

Here's some of the portraits that I shot while I was out there. The b&w ones were shot with the 4x5. I have some others but it may take me a while to get them posted since I have to scan and prep each one. Thanks to everyone who patiently stood for their portrait.

By the way, if anyone is interested in ordering prints, don't bother posting it on the forum since I won't do anything about it. Go to the web site and use the ordering features there. If you want something custom or if you want a print of one of the above posted photos (which you won't find on the original link), contact me directly: john@johnmireles.com

Kick ass work, Juanito...sorry we missed you and Jennifer in S.D., but we didn't even make it out of Bishop...our friend lost her husband in that Mammoth accident and we stuck around to be with her. Sorry I missed the FossilFest...woulda liked to tell Powell "If you get to Jurupa, you gone too far."

Yeah, you missed a good one. Nobody got too liquored up though. Shame...

By the way, I bought a full-blown climber's van. Gonna go out and shoot me some portraits. Coming soon to a crag near you: John and his 4x5. The first thing I'm gonna do is park it in your driveway and throw beer cans out the window. =:-0

Ok. I received the complaint that I'm being disrespectful for making money off of this event since I'm charging for photos. Mea culpa. Since the complaint came from someone that I respect and who probably represents the sentiments of some of those who were involved with throwing the party, I feel like I should explain my thoughts behind photographing the reunion.

A few years ago, I was hired to photograph the Yosemite reunion. I shot a series of group photos that ran in Rock and Ice, but what I didn't do was really document the event and the people. There were a lot of people there that are no longer with us and the opportunity to record their presence is now lost forever. I received requests for prints for some of the photos that I did take, but I wasn't set up for that and couldn't fulfill their requests. (I'd actually provided Rock and Ice prints - at no charge - for them to distribute, but everyone wanted different images so the whole thing ended up a hassle and a waste.)

A year or two after that, I attended Warren Harding's wake in Bishop. I shot a bunch of great photos of everyone partying and having a good time. I have awesome portraits of TM Herbert, Bachar, Chouinard etc. But no one's ever seen those photos since, at the time, I still had no way to share them with others. (Now they're buried in my film archives.)

Fast forward to the J Tree reunion, I knew that nobody would take the time to really document this once in a lifetime event so I figured that I'd do it. I finally had the know how, the equipment, the staff, and the ability to post the images online so that others can order whatever image they want and recive them in a timely manner. I'm a professional photographer and I use a professional service - that I pay for - for online ordering. I don't use any of the Snapfish type services because a) I don't know how to use them and b) they're not set up for the volume of images that I shoot and the quality that I want.

I didn't shoot the reunion as a money-making enterprise. The money that the online service charges basically covers expenses. I can assure everyone that not only will I never get rich from the $8 prints on that service, I probably won't make enough to pay for a tank of gas. The reality is that providing prints for everyone who wants one is more of a pain in the ass than anything else. I'd have rather just posted the images online and not allowed for any print orders, but then I know people would be calling me with special orders anyhow. (Then I'd never get around to them and people would be pissed at me all the same.)

What was most important to me - insofar as the photography was concerned - was documenting all the people that came from all over and then giving everyone the opportunity to view the images and receive prints (if they want them) in a quick and convenient manner. The latter part of that equation does cost money, but hopefully most people understand that that's just the price of convenience.

I appreciate all the efforts that KP and others put into making the reunion an awesome party. I'm just trying to do my part to further the success of their efforts. (Now, as KP would say, quit your bellyaching.)

Well Said.
Move forward please!

Furthermore, you are a pro, the shots are superlative, and I'll be the first to say you deserve at the least a tank of gas and my tip will reflect that sentiment when I order.

John: Sarah and I just read your post. We both entirely agree with your sentiments, greatly appreciate all the effort you expended to photograph everybody, and respect the way you have handled this.

As one of the persons who helped KP organize this event, it bothers me to hear any carping directed toward you.

We say, Bravo!
