We need the climbing community to send letters to New York State to convince them to expand climbing opportunities in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Please see the GCC's talking points page for ideas on what to write at http://gunksclimbers.org/talkpoints.shtml. There is also a sample letter to use as a template at: http://gunksclimbers.org/docs/2009-10-gcc-minne-letter-TEMPLATE.doc

The deadline for public comments is November 13, 2009. This is your chance to have your voice heard - they are listening and we need to let them know how many climbers are out there, how much we'd like more areas open to climbing, and how climbers can benefit the park, the community, the economy and be responsible environmental stewards.

Send your letters to:

Fred Williams, Deputy Director
Palisades Region
NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
Bear Mountain, NY 10911
Phone: 845-786-2701
Fax: 845-786-2776

Thomas B. Lyons, Director of Resource Management NYC Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Empire State Plaza Agency Building 1 Albany, NY 12238 Phone: 518-474-0409 Fax: 518-474-7013

Or send emails to: Minnewaska.plan@oprhp.state.ny.us

Thank you!

We could really use your help here, folks. Many hundreds of potential climbs have been declared off-limits by the Palisades Interstate Park commission. The GCC talking points are a good basis for a letter. Since most of you would be writing as out-of-state persons, I think the most relevant points would be the following.

1. Emphasize your surprise and dismay that the level of climbing restriction imposed on NY State land. Few, if any, states ban climbing like this, and Federal lands are certainly not under such restrictions. Suggest that the availability of climbing could influence your decision to visit New York State, which could certainly use your tourist dollars.

2. Emphasize the point that the master plan should not decide on what areas should be open or closed, as this freezes a complex and dynamic situation, without appropriate consideration, for many years until the next master plan is promulgated.

Instead, the master plan should provide for the development of an ongoing climbing management plan that considers various areas on a case-by-case basis in the light of science-based historical estimates of actual impacts on the Preserve. Such a management process could consider not simply opening and/or closing of particular areas, but also whether and how to provide for limited access in cases in which overpopulation might be judged environmentally detrimental.

With apologies in advance for my actions, I'm going to keep bumping this note until the submission deadline has passed.

It really sucks that they don't allow climbing yet they they will bulldoze a bunch of trees to put up a new bath house, they will dump a bunch of gravel onto the lake shore to create a "beach", and they'll keep expanding the parking to get more and more cars to the top of the mountain.

Not sure if it will do any good, but a letter is in the mail!
