David Wilson: Above all--Mt Whitney and California's Highest Peaks
David Stark Wilson will make a presentation on his and Steve Roper’s new book, Above All, published by Heyday Books in Berkeley. Wilson’s fascination since childhood with the High Sierra has found expression in this remarkable book. Wilson will discuss the origins and methods of the project and his personal experiences in the highest peaks of California. These include driving pins into the Royal Arches in Yosemite at the age of 11 with his father, summiting peaks in Bolivia by age 17, first ascents in the high Sierra from 1981 to 2007, 7 El Cap ascents over the years, and free ascents of the Steck Salathe, Astroman, and the west face of El Cap.

David Stark Wilson, born in Berkeley, California, has been a building designer for over twenty years and a photographer since the age of seventeen. His buildings have won awards from the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, Sunset, and Metropolitan Home Magazine. His interests in design and photography converged during his back-road encounters with the austere agricultural buildings of California’s Central Valley and resulted in his first book, Structures of Utility, published by Heyday Books in 2003. An avid mountaineer, David began to photograph mountain landscapes at an early age. With his newest book, Above All, David brings his unique vision to his photographs of the highest peaks of California.

Wish we heard about this earlier; I would have been able to plan for it. David and his dad, Les Wilson are amazing guys. I have known Les for 46 years and am still profoundly grateful for his guidance from when I was 14 years old. David is very cool and very successful. In his youth, a tremendous boulderer as well. He designed and built Galen Rowell's house by the way.

have a great time, ph.

David's book is exceptional. Not just the 140-degree wraparound camera either. Knowing that backcountry as he does, he managed to perch the hardware, and before dawn, at some places that made me look back two or three times in disbelief at how encompassing the shot became.

And the grunts he took to get them.
Beautiful book, awe inspiring,
Thanks!
