I just drove by it on my way home and it seems to be gaining momentum. UCSC Fire crew was on site as well.

Was at 1000 acres last night and 250 structures threatened.
We have another fire going just north of us near Santa Maria presently at 10,000 acres/ LaBrea fire. In Los Padres National Forest headed East along the Sierra Madre ridge. Apparently due to arson.
Now 8/13/09 6:30 PDT
Quoting 1000 homes in danger and 2800A.
Knobcone pine and manzanita. Hot.
BonnyDoon evacuated.
2000 fire personnel (Force has ramped up quickly. Seems Cal Fire is planning to throw the kitchen sink at it.) Nearly a dozen helicopters though apparently no night vision. I would guess you have several Air Cranes already in action. A short trip from Oregon. As I remember they can do 100mph.

"are they going to shut down the 17?"
See if you can find a situation map preferably a topo. Look on a county site. Counties usually host the comm center. Should show which way it is moving---- at the moment. In steep terrain it will generally move up and along he ridges though wind, as shaped by the fire and the topology, Can move it in any direction.
17 apparently exits the coastal region so they won't want to close it. But if it becomes a fire line...............
If the exits from the area are in danger law enforcement will get really urgent about the mandatory evacuation orders.
