Early 70's, I was a young aspiring climber and boulderer breaking into the 5.9 standard when I got flummoxed on the SW corner of Beer Barrel Rock (Flagstaff Mtn).
I fell from near the top, landed on my feet but then launched into the ground. My outstretched right hand "punched" a rock. As I stood up and the dust settled I looked at my hand. My right ring finger was bent 90 degrees at the second knuckle towards my little finger. Not having played much baseball this was a new and surreal sight for me. I was beginning to wonder what I should do.
Suddenly and with great intent Pat approaches and says "let me see that?" Following orders I reached out and with no warning he reduced it on the spot. Absolutely no hesitation. Problem solved. I learned a lot that day.
Flagstaff Mtn continued to be a source of many discoveries for me. Lots of leaps in my technique were made there, especially bouldering on Pat's problems, watching Jim H. climb and hanging wih my friends as we upped our standards.

Pat wrote the early history section of my Boulder Canyon guide and did a amazing job...I know he wanted it to be different but I thank him for the great effort he made to write it.
The book is way better for having him in it.

Pat was frequently a third on the rope when I climbed with Layton. Later he and I climbed together in Eldo. Before I met him, Layton described him by saying, "this kid's smarter than the two of us put together". Still not a bad description. Climbing, music, photography, riding the rails - he's done it all and written about it. Hasn't forgotten his old friends either.
