Back in the 70’s Gib Lewis was one of the most interesting characters in the original Stonemasters, and that’s saying a lot. He always had a Dr. Spock- like logic and serenity about him, perhaps leading to his later career as an actual rocket scientist.

I had not seen Gib in a long time, until a couple of years ago, when he moved to Breckenridge with his wife Lisa and two kids.

Here’s Gib, on Mt. Watkins, when Tobin, Gib and I did the South Face, circa 1975.

We were able to get out backcountry snowboarding a couple of months ago. Gib used to be a skier, but injuries made hard ski boots painful for him. As a result, he saw the light and is a full time snowboarder these days. Living in Breck, he gets 100+ days on the slopes.

We started at this mine not far from Winter Park and headed for a little peak.

Gib in split mode skinning up.

Met my friend Adam and his friends at the col.

Enjoyed the view on top; rare day with zero wind.

It was a good ride down. Here near the top, it was wind affected and fast, down below was day old, but still light, powder.

A couple of weeks later, Gib came down to Boulder for the Bachar show and the big spring snowstorm.

Nothing better than playing in the mountains with old friends. Anyone have any Gib stories out there?

Gib was one of the best all around athletes of the original Stonemasters. Skiing, windsurfing - you name it, Gib did it very well.

He also took a 100 foot groundfall while soloing rotton ice up at Lee Vining and Ricky and I (and others, includikng the late Dennis Miller) had to pack him out, thinking he was a gonner. He came back stronger than ever. Amazing guy.
