PennsyEnvy, The Doctor and I decided to see if Winslow Wall was climbable yesterday. We figured we had about a 50/50 chance of crossing Clear Creek, since it's still pretty early and we had a big snow year. Sure enough, there was still plenty of water!

We discussed the options, and decided to go for it, as the creek looked *barely* crossable. We left Bosco the Dog at the rim with some water and headed down.

The approach is quite a process and one that must be reversed at days end. First there is a scramble down a slot

then there is a ramp that requires one to drop the pack and pull it down as you delicately descend. Once you get through this, there is a 60-foot rappel to the canyon floor.

When we reached the creek, it was running hard and looked deep!

I crossed first. It was very cold, the rocks were slippery and the water was thigh-deep. To make the crossing easier, we strung a rope from the middle rock in the creek to the "climbing" side

Here's the Doctor making the crossing

When we all got safely to the other side, we dried out and warmed up on a nice 5.10 in the sun. The doctor then led his excellent route "Brojob" a stellar 5.11 on perfect incut flakes. We all were smiling and happy by this point

Tim starting the climb, which invloved a *little* water negotiation

We then moved over to the "Hasbro" arete, which has some of the finest .11d/.12a sport climbing in the state! Tim getting silly during a rest (shades of Sherman in Arapiles!?!)

After a few runs on these climbs, it was time to head back, feeling like we were probably the first ones out to Winslow Wall this year.

One can climb an easy chimney out and pull up the packs from the rappel ropes

When we got Bosco and were back at the car, the Doctor realized he had lost his wallet during the day, so he headed back down and Tim and I waited.

The Doctor never found his wallet (bummer) but we did have a grand adventure! The area should be good and ready for climbing in another couple of weeks. We did leave the rope up for any other intrepid climbers!

Cheers! Erik

MrE,

Great TR -- thanks! On my first visit to Winslow, I made the mistake of trying to climb the 5.5 chimney wearing a pack full of cams. Felt like 5.14 as I got stuck pretty much all the way up.

I have heard there is a rap anchor near the parking area that allows you to avoid the evil descent. Is that true? If so, does it put down onto high ground, or should you wear a snorkel for the rap? Guess you'ld still have to do the climb out, though.

I don't know about that one - I'll ask the Doc when I see him. This time of year, the regular descent is the only way to go. The water height limits the availability of climbs and access.

One more picture...

While we were waiting for David, I wandered around and being the consummate rock-hound, I picked up a few rocks. When I pulled them out of my pack last night and stacked 3 of them together - Voila!

P.S. PennsyEnvy! Post some of your pictures!?!

It is true that there is a rap station right below parking/camp. You don't gain much by using it. You'd have to jug back out and it's at the "other" end of the canyon from many of the climbs. On a day when the river is up it would be hard to get around.
