Sorry for the tease, these are from about '76 thru '81.
I've got a new scanner and it's a rainy day. Well, it rained at some point during the day, and this is San Diego, I'm not going OUT THERE.

Recipe for ice in Idyllwild: dump a bunch of snow on top, follow with warm days,(drip) and cold nights (well, you know).

The Trough can fill in real good. These are from 2 different years with Kelly Vaught-

Over around the NE Face can give some great mixed stuff, typically peters out up high, finish on easy rock. A real treat for So Cal.

Tom Scott cruising some styrofoam-

On Suicide, we've found great, thick water ice on 'Ours', over by Hot Buttered Rump. There's a regular drainage over there.
The rare plum is the Weeping Wall. I've heard of people chopping thru the ice to find bolts,(it's too thin for screws) but man you'd have to have some kind of photographic memory to do that. We did'nt. The other method, other than soloing, is to climb along the edge and look for bolts on the dry rock.

Starting 2nd pitch of Revelation, I'm still looking for that 1st bolt. Found it soon after-

Galen Kirkwood led us thru-

An exit up the Surprise gully-

Screw 'global warming', this can still happen. It was always a crap shoot, you gotta be persistant. Many, many times we plowed our way up there only to find things plastered with powder snow, it had stayed too cold. You couldn't tell from the parking lot what all that white icing was. Brad

Very nice - I'm not sure whether to be more amazed by the photos of snow/ice climbing at Tahquitz, or of wind surfing in the Valley. All pretty neat.

Great stuff! Wish I was still ascending and all that. Clearly missed out on some good T & S action.

Leather, wool, and 70cm axes man, where it's at.

I'm having fun with the scanner and the responses. Got boxes full of this crap hasn't seen daylight in ages.

The Trough in good conditions always has and probably always will be on my tick list. I've been up there in winter but never could time the conditions right. Usually a bunch of soft snow on top of rock, excating cracks, loose stuff funnelling down the Trough, etc. Always kind of an adventure all the same.

If this stuff starts to form up with this current round of storms, can any locals post up and let us know? It's probably too warm though...

BeeHay,
That was some trip up the NFace with you and Tom. Think it took me four different winters up there until we found the conditions just right. I remember being the only one with a helmet, and you crouching below me as Tom sent down ice shards from above.......what an experience!
