Hey guys I'm thinking of putting in a really simple bed-kit in my 90' Subaru legacy wagon. I'm thinking just some moderate risers and a plywood base. Has anyone done this? How were your results? Do people recommend a hinged piece of plywood or one big one? Any suggestion on possibly just a single bed size or some sort of customizable one/two person set up?

And finally...will this be at all comfortable, or am I just kidding myself with the headroom?

Cheers,
Arthur

Fifteen or so years ago, I removed the rear seat from my 85' Subaru GL wagon which enabled me to sleep diagonally on a camping pad.

I've got a '96 Legacy, and I don't think it would work well to actually build a bed.

I've lived in it for a couple summers, and what always worked well for me was a crashpad in the back, with bedding on top of it. I keep two crates, one of camping stuff, one of climbing stuff. During the day (while driving) they're in the back on the bed, at night I put them on the driver's and passenger's seats. It works well. But I don't think there's enough space in a Legacy wagon to really build a bed.

I've thought about doing this for my WRX Wagon. If I slide the front seats all the way forward and then tilt them forward I can get a full size camprest in there but it is not perfectly flat. If I was going to do it I would build it out of fiberglasses foam sheets because they don't weight much and won't warp over time. I would build it so that it sits on the rear seats and only rises at the rear of the car. Then I wouldn't lose any height where it matters sleeping and wouldn't have to stuff all my sh!t behind the front seat to fill that area up like I do now.

how tall are you? If you're 6'1" or more, I'd say it's not worth it, unless you drive with the seats jammed against the steering wheel. We've got a legacy outback wagon and it's ok with just me diagonally, but two peeps just don't cut it. Similarly if you make a bed and it isn't diagonal, then you just going to be compressing the insulation out of your sleeping bag and you'll artificially curl up in your sleep to not bang your toes against the hatch door when closed.

hope that helps.

Buy a roof box. Craigslist probably has some cheaper than new.

You'll have way more room inside your car when you can stuff a bunch of crap up there.

What about a roof top tent? Numerous models to pick from and gives you plenty of space for 2 or more. It won't help your fuel mileage though.

Awesome advice everyone. Thanks. I think I may go the route of roof rock/box and just sleep back there with the seats down.
