Rokjox, great photo essay.
One of my brothers was detained by the police in the people’s Park demonstrations.
Now he is a Bush supporter (or was until recently).
Go figure.
Fattrad, gotta love your ‘logic’.

"Parks are wonderful, seizing public land is not'
hahaha....good grief Fatty. Did you read what Rox posted. The "people" said they wanted a park on their "public" land. If the people aren't the public, then who is?
Thanks Rox, for posting this. I am sorry about your friends and their hurt. Hopefully we will learn from this.

There is no such thing as "public land". The government owns it.

Do we want to give everyone who occupies public land the right to use it as they see fit because they are, after all, "the public"?
I'm not rationalizing the brutality of the crackdown--at all. The cops and those in charge had it out for the protestors for years. There was definitely a culture/political values clash at stake.
But the land belonged to all the people of California, not the self-appointed citizens of Berkeley who decided to make it a park.

If the government does not do our bidding, then we should throw them out. If we stand idly by, then we deserve what we get.

Excellent, thank you. Of the 30,000+ of us who walk by there everyday to get to class, how many know this history? Not too many I think.
Baffled by some of the responses here, but dissonance is what makes the world go round, woo - and boy are we spinning these days.

Is the People's park the area where currently a bunch of people are living up in the trees to stop the downing of the trees? If so, there's a chain link fence surrounding it and at night the police have erected very bright light pointed at the tree sitters!!!!
According to my daughter who attends UC Berkeley the school wants to enlarge the stadium which would require the downing of the beautiful trees. I hope the tree sitters prevail!!!

Wow, that's not cool if they are preventing many more trees from being planted. Who the Hell are these charaters in the trees? Obviously they are unemployed and not students at Cal, I bet they are ones who reply to the adds I see in the paper and are paid to tree sit. I don't really admire these people, there are more worthy causes out there.
Incidentally, my daughter is fairly liberal but she thinks the tree people are whacked!!!! It has been eye opening for her attending Cal, she is so annoyed by the ultra liberal, according to her, they are arrogant and self-righteous.

Thanks for posting this Peoples Park thing Rokjox.
I remember this era very very well. Some of the windfall from the Peoples Park actually filtered to Yosemite and caused the riots here in the summer of 1970.
Another sad history lesson in our terrible world we live in.

Thanks for posting this. My brother lived across the street from the Park for a couple of years, and frankly I wasn't crazy about the place, especially during Burning Man season when I quite literally could not get out of my car without tripping over people sleeping on the sidewalk. But the pictures of tear gas coming out of helicopters really blew my mind. It's like the kids at Davis being doused with pepper spray times 10.

Here's to People's Park!
The "people" and University were negotiating and planning for a mutually beneficial use of the land.
Gov Reagan jumped in and (with his Chief of Staff Edmund Meese) was entirely responsible for the riots and one death.
During its first three weeks, People's Park was used by both university students and local residents, and local Telegraph Avenue merchants voiced their appreciation for the community's efforts to improve the neighborhood.[10][11] Objections to the expropriation of university property tended to be mild, even among school administrators.
Governor Ronald Reagan had been publicly critical of university administrators for tolerating student demonstrations at the Berkeley campus, and he had received enormous popular support for his 1966 gubernatorial campaign promise to crack down on what was perceived as the generally lax attitude at California's public universities. Reagan called the Berkeley campus "a haven for communist sympathizers, protesters and sex deviants."[12] Reagan considered the creation of the park a direct leftist challenge to the property rights of the university, and he found in it an opportunity to fulfill his campaign promise.
Governor Reagan overrode Chancellor Heyns' May 6 promise that nothing would be done without warning, and on Thursday, 15 May 1969 at 4:30 a.m., he sent 300 California Highway Patrol and Berkeley police officers into People's Park. The officers cleared an 8-block area around the park while a large section of what had been planted was destroyed and an 8-foot (2.4 m) tall perimeter chain-link wire fence was installed to keep people out and to prevent the planting of more trees, grass, flowers and shrubs.
The escalation of violence was shocking, hundreds of demonstrators were seriously injured, one killed, many shot with '00' buckshot. If you want the full story

Wow, Reagan was a serious d!ck! Although, to be fair, Berkeley was/is a haven for protestors, deviants, etc., right? Not that the community deserved what the gov. dished out. The photos of the cops are pretty scary--real storm trooper types, although the one "peace out" National Guard dude was cool.
Burn one down for People's Park!

I had never heard of this episode in history.
It makes me think of how the Department of Homeland Security helped several Governors and Mayors coordinate the shutdown of the Occupy movement in several cities simultaneously.
Once they moved in it was over everywhere in about a week. I guess they have gotten better at controlling the media and doing the deed.
Which is more important? The First or Second Amendment? Arent the police supposed to uphold our rights? (I wanna puke just for asking that question)
