Yeah I'm thinking 50 to 89 to 395, but not sure if 120 thru the meadows could be faster, probably not.

as far as 50 vs. 120 - I would guess that depends entirely on the traffic you find on either route.
and we still find 50 to 207 to be about as fast, or faster, than 50 to 89 - if you find the Secret Cutoff to avoid Minderville. 89 is more direct, but so slow and windy, especially if you are behind the rented RV that you will be behind.

My wife does this fairly often. She takes 50 to 89 to 88 and then into Gardnerville and 395. There is a shortcut that doesn't require going quite so far north on 88 as the map indicates, but I don't know how to pick it up coming from the west. From Bishop, it is the first light after Bishop.

50 to 89 to 395, use markleeville cutoff off of 89 to hit 395 below Topaz lake.

My wife does this fairly often. She takes 50 to 89 to 88 and then into Gardnerville and 395. There is a shortcut that doesn't require going quite so far north on 88 as the map indicates, but I don't know how to pick it up coming from the west.
This is true. However, I've tried taking that shortcut 3 times now (most recently last Friday) and gotten lost every time, so in the end maybe it's better to go all the way to 395. (Or definitely don't go with me if I'm driving.) Anyone want to post the driving beta? Heading to 395 from Tahoe I know it involves turning right off 88 at an intersection with the broken-down remains of a former bar, but I don't know the name of the road.
Anyway, I've been told that this is easier (on your car and maybe your mind) and takes about the same time, as staying on 89 and taking Monitor Pass.
