I have a client who needs a new Captain/ property manager for his Northern Mi estate.
Here is a brief description
Estate Manager Wanted
for 250 acre estate on Lake Charlevoix. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, hands on management of four houses, large boathouse, horse barn, antique and classic boats and cars, extensive landscape, and resource management. An understanding of electrical and
mechanical systems is required. Position will require management of seasonal employees. Attention to detail is vital. Nautical background
desirable. Residence provided.

Prod, looks like a good job.
How do you like MI anyway? I just applied for a position with Dow Corning in Midland. Is there any good climbing out that way?

absolutely no climbing in Midland... just a smattering in MI at all unless you can wait for ice and drive 3 hrs or more north. its so lame there climbing wise.. I know of a climbing gym in Grand Rapids that is on a" call up and see if we're here" basis BUT change your sport to biking or cross country skiing or fishing or sailing or better yet canoeing and its great. Latitude gives you about 30 of 40 days overcast.

Unless the job is great, I mean really great, I'd take a pass if I were you. The closest climbing to Midland is someplace called the pit. I guess it is near Lansing but I have heard it is really not worth the drive. There is some nice Granite in the UP, but none of teh cliffs get above 100' tall. Canada is closer, for you it would be a 6 hour drive, Marquette would be 8 hours +/-. The rock in Canada is pretty nice but still nothing too long. If you move this way I'll gill you in with all I have found thus far.

Thanks for the heads up on the climbing in MI.
The job I'm applying for would be significantly better than the one I have, of course I'd have to trade living in the mountains. I've been told if I get this job I'll be looking at a Director or VP position in 5 years. Now that I have a kid this sounds pretty good. Hopefully I'll be able to check out the area next week and see if it'll work out.

Kartch, may happiness follow you wherever you decide to settle. I realize that you are starting a family (cool), but the quality of your living environment will be the biggest decision that you'll make regarding your child(ren).
Money for "things" is okay, but where, and how, one habitates defines oneself. Cheers, bro.

Prod - thanks for the links. Those Ontario pics were nice.
Mo - good advice; a child's quality of life is key. I cherish the one I had growing up in rural Utah.
In all reality the most I'll probably get out of this is a free plane ride to MI and a chance to tour Dow for a few days but I thought I'd throw my name in the hat.

Kartch, ditto on what Prod is telling ya. Unless the offer is too good to pass up, and you want to take up mtn biking or canoeing (or hunting or sno-mo-drinking) I would recommend against moving to the mitten. In Midland you're about as far away from decent climbing as I think is possible on this continent. You'd be 2hrs from Grand Ledge, which has the only (legally accessible) crag in the lower penninsula (chossy and short), about 5hrs away from ice or granite in Canada, maybe 7hrs from RRG, 8hrs from Devils Lake, 5-6 from some smaller crags in the UP, 5hrs from Rattlesnake.
If you end up going for it, make sure you have a good road-trip vehicle!
