ralph - according to the American Heritage Dictionary this is an intransitive verb (meaning to vomit, of course).

My online access may be old, but it is not listed in the Oxford English Dictionary!

So when was it first used as a verb. What is its derivation?

Try wikipedia, or doing another query. Surely you would have had the answer in the time it took you to post this thread?

i don't know, but that sure is an interesting question.

the title of your thread reminded me that i have been meaning to read that book about the making of the first dictionary. i have some books i'm not really into anymore so i planned on taking them into the used bookstore to trade for new ones but i got busy and forgot, so thanks for starting this thread and triggering the memory!

Phil,
Swear! I know a guy with that first name. Family name H i e r l, (hate to have it pop up on a search).

You can imagine how his last name is pronounced.

So let's add first use of the word "hurl", also used as a verb with the same meaning.

http://www.onelook.com/?w=hurl&ls=a Ed's link with a wrinkle.

Interestingly, though hurl is in the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, it is missing a key definition.

Maybe they just don't hurl or ralph in England, (Yet?)
